Jesse and Cigi Geocaching lesson plan Description: 4H students will locate Geocaches hidden outdoors using a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS). This is a geography based approach to problem solving. This will be a fun and engaging way to evaluate students' understanding of longitude and latitude, global navigation, and the Global Positioning System. It will also improve their ability to manipulate and understand technology. Geocaching will improve and help develop many skills in areas such as: geography, math, and science, and environmental literacy. Learning Goals: Enhance and extend students' understanding of global geography o Objective: Students will be able to locate the assigned Geocaches using a GPS Increase visual perception o Objective: Students will be able to search for objects out of the ordinary surroundings once they have reached the coordinates to find the Geocache that is hidden in the area Develop technology skills using handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers o Objective: Students will be able to the set up and navigate to the desired destinations using a GPS Materials: Computer with Internet access Handheld GPS receivers (one GPS unit for every 2-3 students) Paper and pencil for field notes and journal entries, sign Geocache logs Preparation: Instructors will determine the classes’ understanding of longitude and latitude and their technology skill levels. Instructors should have basic computer skills, basic geography skills, and experience operating a handheld GPS. Become familiar with the GPS handheld units. Familiarize yourself with the Geocaching Web site, and how to use it. Find caches and report your finds to the Geocaching Web site, or record the coordinates manually. What to Do: Introduce students to Geocaching Introduce GPS systems and how to use them to navigate to a specific coordinate. o Teach GPS theory of latitude, longitude, and satellite systems. o Provide clear understanding to students on how to read coordinates and what they mean. Arrange for students to look for the caches registered on the Web site. Report the student experience and if they were able to find the Geocaches. Using a computer access www.geocaching.com and provide an overview of this worldwide recreational activity. For students: Divide students into groups, with one GPS receiver per group; assign roles, such as GPS handler, and logbook keeper. Change roles so that everyone has a chance to use the GPS receiver and enter coordinates. Give each group coordinates to a cache and have them find it. Wrap up: Discuss the Geocaching activity. Have students write a description of the experience, including search coordinates they used, and any photos of their find.
