ENAS 606 : Polymer Physics Chinedum Osuji 02.05.2009:HO5 Size and Mass Characterization - Non Scattering 1 Viscosity Measurements 1.1 Viscosity De nitions There are several di erent \types" of viscosities that one may encounter in uid dynamics. First, we di erentiate between the kinematic and dynamic viscosities, referred to by symbols and or . They are related via the density of the medium, with = = . The units of dynamic viscosity are Poise or Pa.s and the dimensions are [ML 1T 1]. Kinematic viscosity has dimensions of [L2T 1] and is thus sometimes referred to as a momentum di usivity. For a complex uid in which a solvent viscosity s is modi ed to the a concentration c of a second phase species resulting in an overall viscosity , the following viscosities are de ned in Table 1. Table 1: De nition of Viscosities Name Expression Relative Viscosity r = = s Speci c Viscosity sp = r 1 Reduced Viscosity red = sp=c Inherent Viscosity limc!0( r=c) Intrinsic Viscosity [ ] = limc!0(...
