ENG 430
Seminar in Film & Media Theory
5*****
Professor Nieland is quite possibly the best professor I've had in my time at Michigan State. I've just finished up his seminar in Film Theory, focused on affective cinema, and it's been the most rewarding course I've ever taken. This course (and his teaching of it) has fundamentally changed not only the way I see film and my ability to write/think critically and analytically, but also my entire life plan, as I now intend to pursue a graduate education in Film Studies. Nieland is so excited and enthusiastic about the subject matter that he so clearly loves that one cannot help but also be excited and enthusiastic. He is so knowledgeable, but also absolutely receptive to new ideas, even those in direct contention with his own. He fosters group discussion in a way I've never seen in any other class. His film classes are very difficult, absolutely, but they are incredibly rewarding if you are willing to put in the effort. I have learned more in Nieland's seminar than probably any other two classes combined, and I can truly say that it helped me grow as a writer and a film scholar. If you want an excellently taught course that you are guaranteed to take something away from, take any of Nieland's classes.

Pros: Enthusiastic

Interesting Topic
Cons: Heavy reading

Difficult
I don't really know of anyone who loves IAH classes, but this was not as bad as it could be. The topic was interesting and although there is a lot of reading to do, almost all of it was interesting (Fight Club, I Am Legend). He also incorporates a lot of films into the class. However, although the concepts themselves are not especially challenging, the exams and papers cover a lot of material and he expects you to actually write something that makes connections. This is NOT a class you can cram for the night before, you must go to class and take good notes. Overall most lectures were interesting because he was very enthusiastic and he was good about creating class discussion. The paper topics were not too bad, and you have a lot of opportunities to get help if you need it. This class requires some effort, but a 4.0 is not unachievable.

Great professor, highly recommended. A fair bit of reading, but not over-the-top. We read 1 really difficult text by Beckett, but otherwise it was pretty straightforward and enjoyable reading. He lectures a lot and expects you to pay attention, but his lectures can be helpful. He was very nice and understanding and helpful, he really seemed to care that students understood the material. Somewhat tough grader on papers, as he expects a lot. However, he GIVES a lot back to you in terms of comments, and he really tries to help you improve your writing.

My only beef with his class was that I felt he didn't do enough to encourage discussion. In a class of about 25 he pretty much just talked and asked for people to speak up in front of the whole class while we were in a lecture-seated fashion. Would have enjoyed some more group discussion.

Overall great prof, highly recommended.

Pros: Nieland is amazing. I've had him for two classes and I really have nothing bad to say about him. He's one of my favorite professors. He's very down to earth and extremely approachable. He also knows his shit, which is always nice. One of the best professors I've probably ever had, seriously. I put that he gives frequent homework but it's really just reading, actually homework doesn't ever happen in this class.
Cons: A course pack that I could buy instead of printing off...maybe? Honestly I have nothing bad to say about Nieland or this class.

DO NOT take this class if you want an easy 4.0. I worked extremely hard and ended up with a 3.5. You will always be reading because there is a ridiculous amount of books for a 2nd level IAH. Attendance is mandatory too unless you want to miss an in-class pop quiz. Overall, I was surprised by how difficult this class really was. We aren't all English majors and yet the expectation was that we were. This ranking is based on the class itself though; Nieland is a enthusiastic teacher who knows what he is talking about.

Nieland was a good professor and made class enjoyable. He picked texts that here fun to read and interesting as well. Sometimes I had a hard time paying attention in class because he lectured a lot- I would recommend not bringing your computer, that's what got me in trouble with not paying attention. Prof Nieland is also very quick at responding to emails which was always nice. If you can, take this class.. just make sure you keep up on the reading because if you fall behind it will be difficult to catch up.

Great Professor! It was not really an easy class by any means but I think my writing and close reading skills really improved. We started the semester with poetry which scared me, but thanks to this class I finally really enjoy reading poetry. Tough professor but very fair. He was always willing to listen to everyone's opinion's in class and never put anyone's ideas down. If you're willing to work hard and really get a solid English base, take Nieland.

Nieland is my favorite professor I've taken at MSU. He's super enthusiastic about the material he covers (very tailored to his research interests) and is very smart. As an English professor, I like that he actually taught a lot of good stuff rather than opening up discussion all the time and just having students throw out comments of questionable value. Also he's pretty youthful and cool and connected to awesome pop/high cultural stuff.

Very good teacher. His lectures are very informative and he is very enthusiastic. He is very willing to help you outside of class, and always cares about how his students are doing. His class is very tough though, and you have to keep up with most of the reading.

Pros: very passionate, fair with time given for assignments, open for discussions, students involved in the class

He was a great teacher. He was not too hard of a grader, but I definitely was able to improve my writing throughout the course.

Pros: Great teacher. Explains everything thoroughly. You really learn a lot.
Cons: Readings are quite long and sometimes ask a lot for a 200 level English Class. As long as you can complete every reading and come to class every day, you will have no trouble.

Professor Nieland is great for any student serious about literature. ENG 210 is great with him because the whole class is involved in discussion. There is not a lot of work, but it is sometimes very difficult.

Like reading a whole lot and then getting way to deep into analysis? Take this guy. Like reading about 200 pages a day for a 3 credit course? Take this guy. Like learning anything that's going to get you anywhere but doing exactly what he is; reviewing other writers' works? Don't take him.
