He is an awesome prof! I highly recommend his classes simply they are up to date and you will learn a lot of materials with different prospectives.

Zierler is an interesting guy. He is very smart and has a dry sense of humor. He assigns NO homework and compared to other 201 teachers his class is easy. You have to post a 2-4 sentence summary or question on Angel once a week about the material, but that's it. He is a tough grader, but wants you to do well. I think it's either a love/hate thing with him. I appreciated him as a professor but didn't love him as a person. He is not incredibly helpful at office hours, and sometimes will treat you like an idiot when you ask questions. His lectures are interesting and I enjoyed his session.

I was over in Brussels with Zierler and then took MC 390 with him in the Spring. The thing I like most about him is how approachable he is and the way he conducts class in a very informal manner. This guy won't take bullshit, and he will know whether you a) are actually trying b) give a rip and c) are listening to him and not messing around on your laptop. Easy to talk to, lectures are interesting, and he has a brilliantly dry sense of humor. Definitely one of my fave Madison profs.

Professor Zierler is very knowledgeable on his topic of study and does a great job of teaching. Rather than being a pure academic Zierler is really a professor as well. His classes are mostly lecture, but are engaging and very interesting. Outside of class Zierler is great at giving advice for the future and helping you find your areas of interest. He looks for specific things on his exams so use a lot of vocab and be very specific.

Amazing Prof. VERY helpful, always willing to talk to you, hopes to see you at office hours. The classes are interesting, and his lectures, though somewhat unstructured, are still solid enough so you can take adequate notes. Attendance isn't really talked about, I've missed maybe 3 times, though I never wanted to (all do to family/illness). I would recommend him to every Madison student. I hope I take him again.

I really enjoyed Zierler's class. This particular class did not have heavy discussion and was mostly lecture but it was still good. He would go beyond the readings instead of regurgitate material. His paper assignments were really beneficial and difficult but made you learn a lot. Great Prof! He's always in his office and will talk to you whenever...office hours are pretty much all the time.

Pros: It's interesting course material
Cons: There's a ton of reading
Professor Zierler is a really great professor, he has a really dry sense of humor that really fits the type of class he teaches. Sometimes there will be a lot of reading but he makes sure that he'll go over the material and leave it up to the class if you don't understand something. I really enjoyed the class

Wonderful professor - really engages with the students and cares a lot about their learning as well as their actual lives. He goes out of his way to get to know students and help them with their research paper if they take the time to visit his office hours or seek feedback. Expected amount of reading, but the books are actually interesting and relevant.

He is an AWESOME prof. He is really easy to talk to and very friendly, plus he has a great sense of humour. Class was always interesting. He does grade a bit harder than other Madison profs, because he expects more from his students, but he is very helpful with any questions. Go to office hours! I will definitely take something else with him.

Zierler is DIFFICULT, but incredible smart. He doesn't let his students slack off, but is still very approachable. There is an insane amount of reading, but it's all worth it. Going to his office hours was not really that helpful, because I think he wants students to learn by challenge (such as low grades and constructive criticism...)

Pros: fair grader
Cons: hard to understand sometimes
zeirler is a smart guy. I am more a economics guy so the security stuff kinda bores me. but he is a good teacher. If you take this class you can be assured that you be totally F***ed like i hear some of the other IR professors do. If you can take 220 with zeirler. do it.

He is so lazy. His powerpoint slides contain 3 bullets each. The highlight of the class was when he showed a PBS video. Seriously.

He's a nice man, and we had a decent chat when I stopped by his office hours. But I didnt learn anything and he certainly didnt teach enough to make a difference.
