THEA 1030 - Theatre Appreciation
I am an Aerospace Pro-Pilot major with a 3.9 GPA.. I know how to study but this class made me feel downright stupid. I expect to make a high B, probably not an A. :( The only thing that is keeping me there is the project grades and the extra credit. I took every bit I could get... Enjoy
Pros: -The extra credit is the only thing that is keeping me floating now...
-His voice and walking style definitely makes for a comic relief
Cons: Horrible professor. He loves teaching, don't get me wrong, but he doesn't care at all if you are having trouble understanding his lectures. His tests are brutal. They only covered his lectures.. but only the little things that you're not listening for... The book is a complete and utter waste of money. I take avid notes and read the whole chapter until I know everything but yet I could study in the library for 6 hours at a time (which I did) and still have a hard time making a B. I feel like if you are taking this as a GenEd and you couldn't care less about dumb 'ol theatre then don't even think about taking this professor. He teaches his class as if everyone is a theatre major and that theatre is the only thing to live for in this world. NO. JUST. NO. lol Thank you and enjoy the rest of your day..

Dr. Hansen is an amazing teacher! I would definitely recommend him for any student to take. He is extremely knowledgeable and he did not make the class too difficult...but it's not a walk in the park. You have to pay attention and read the plays. I think the class was a good balance.

I definitely learned a lot and learned to appreciate theater more. Definitely "got my money's worth" and if I needed another theater class, I would take it with Dr. Hansen.

Exams: The tests were straightforward and not very difficult. If you read the plays and listened to the lectures, you would be fine. There are no trick questions and if you just pay attention, you'll do well.

Homework: There really was no "homework." We were required to see an MTSU theater production for credit and we were also given opportunities to go to other MTSU productions for extra credit. The first project was just a research presentation on a Broadway play and the second was merely reading a play and giving an oral report. The work is not hard, you just have to be dedicated enough to do it.

Textbook: Dr. Hansen uses vocabulary from the textbook that he does not go over in class on his tests. So if you want to make certain you get perfect scores on his tests, read over the bold-faced terms in the textbook. If you're a good guesser, I guess you can skip out on it. Sharing a book might be a good option.

He is an incredible teacher. I would take him again any day. He was so funny. He gives you plenty of chances for extra credit. He does not take attendance, but if you miss class, you will not do well on the tests. Period. His final was 100 ? T/F so you had to really know the material. He does give you a class period before the final to ask questions and review. I enjoyed his class so much that I had to stop spending all my time on his class and do other work. He is a wonderful, caring teacher if you get to know him. He knows alot of people in the business and knows detail on top of detail about the business. I definitely got my money's worth watching him act out what he is teaching.

Exams: While the text is needed, you will not do good in this class if you are absent too much-duh this is college.

Homework: Read 4 plays and have a quiz over each, 2 oral presentations, attend a play(s), usher for extra credit

Textbook: Perhaps you could make it without a book, but to get a good grade you need the book. The book is a life saver for the final.

Pros: - Excellent teacher, very knowledgeable

- Nice person

- Easy tests, quizzes

- No attendance policy

- Easy course material
Cons: None
Hansen is a very smart professor that teaches the material you need to know. He does the whole class from memory - he has no notes, and he does each lecture strictly from the top of his head every day. It's quite remarkable, really, how effective of a teacher he is and how much stuff he remembers without any notes of any kind. You will have to read 3-4 plays with an easy quiz for each. They are easy A's believe me. Next you will have 3 exams and a final, but all of these are fairly straightforward. Most of it is multiple choice, and the he is very easy-going on the short answer questions. Finally, you have two semester projects, but they shouldn't take you more than a couple hours a piece to do.

Overall, Hansen is an excellent teacher for this course and I have nothing but positive things to say.

Pros: This is it. Straight out. If you go to class and take GOOD notes you will make an A! He gives a lot of extra credit oppurtunities to bring up your grade. I highly suggest this professor. The exams were entirely based on what he said in class, except maybe one question, which was a bold term in the book. We have two projects in this class, both are very simple. You choose to read a play, and do a 3 min oral presentation, from where you are sitting. VERY EASY. You then do an oral project on a musical of your choice, which is also very simple! You also must attend one MTSU production. He also gives 4 easy quizzes over plays you read outside of class, (he drops the lowest grade on one of them).

He is an awesome teacher. He is very enthusiatic about teacher and is very funny! I loved him. He was very flexible and easy to understand and outlined the lecture clearly. He will work with you! You have to attend a play too!!

Exams: They were easy for the most part and graded very fairly. If you got anywhere near the name, he counted it.

Homework: Projects because it was Honors and Reading plays which you had quizes on(about four)

Textbook: YOu don't have to have it because he lectures very clearly, but it helps because sometimes he throws in things from the book that weren't taught in lecture.

Dr. Hanson is so knowledgeable about theatre. Class is always interesting. I am in the honors section and really enjoy the class. Exams are a little tough, you have to know everything gone over in class and take very good notes. There are 4 quizzes over plays you have to read and you can drop one. You are required to see 2 MTSU play productions and he offers extra credit if you see more. Very good teacher, I would recommend him for this class!

Dr. Hansen really seemed to enjoy teaching. As long as you go to class and pay attention, there is no way that you can't make a good grade. There were a couple of projects but they were easy and didn't take much time to complete.

Exams: There was always a bonus. Most questions came strictly from the lecture.

Homework: None

Textbook: Some test questions came from the textbook but the majority came from lectures.

Pros: Good teacher

Experienced in theatre field

Projects are easy and he grades them easy
Cons: (Honors) His tests were more difficult than expected

I didn't want to study as much as I did with this class, but I did take the Honors section. Overall, the class was easy and I made an A and didn't have to study too much.

Pros: Dr. Hansen is a great professor. He's passionate about what he does and has TONS of interesting stories. His lecturing is easy to follow.
Cons: Exams are tough. Well, at least, I thought they were for a humanities course. No conjecture, just facts that he occasionally doesn't emphasize nearly as much as other.

Theatre History II: Restoration to Present

Pros: Best Professor Ever! Take his class.
Cons: Readings are often, but it is useful stuff.

There are quizzes throughout, a project, a midterm, and a final. It is a pretty standard amount of work.

If you want to have fun, don't take this class. This is purely a Theater background class, and you don't actually get to apply what you learn to real life. Dr. Hansen cracks a joke every now and then, though some of his jokes won;t be understood unless you are a drama geek like he is! He clearly has a passion for the material though, and he indulges it quite frequently. He certainly has the experience to back up his knowledge of the material and he has some neat stories!

Exams: You have got to read the assigned reading and take really thorough notes in class. Most of the tested material is in your notes, but to ace a test you should read your book. It's a lot of dates and terminology that can get jumbled together if you don't devote enough time to studying the material.

Homework: Read plays. You have opportunities for extra credit, which aren't too painful. You can attend a couple plays for extra credit and be an usher, so he gives you practical things that relate to the class for a grade boost, which is the only practical application aspect of the class. There are 2 projects which require you to do research outside of class.

Textbook: Very technical. Not a fun read, but a must do for a good grade. You can't skim and get away with it, the only way for it to be effective is to read the assigned material.
