Dr. Hemmerly is a very sweet man. However he is somewhat elderly and difficult to understand. He often doesn't understand students when they ask questions, so questions often don't get answered. This class is extremely hard. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone. I made all A's this semester except for in this class and I worked and studied very hard.

Exams: The tests were graded fairly, but the material that was on them was not presented completely or clearly in class. The final is comprehensive and counts twice.

Homework: The course required no homework. Dr. Hemmerly does give extra credit and if you take this course you'll need it. He gives a quiz EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!! And at the end of the class all of your quiz grades average to equal a test grade.

Textbook: A textbook is required. You don't use it during class, but he assigns reading from it. However, the readings are pointless because they don't discuss what he discusses and none of what is in the book is on the test.

He presents material relevent to the class, but his voice is very low and.....how to put this....can lull you to sleep if you aren't careful. He does not take roll, so when you go in on test days, there's approximately three times the number of people who are normally in the class. I won't recommend taking him or not taking him, I'll just say this: if you don't mind a slide projector, some off-the-wall humor (that apparantly no one but me and a few other people understand), and lots of unending lecture, you have it made.

Exams: I did not think the tests were difficult. Most of the material is simply a more advanced version of eighth-grade biology.

Homework: None

Textbook: You really don't need to buy the book. I read the first section of chapter one, and I haven't opened it since. He doesn't follow the book, but he follows his own schedule. I considered taking mine back to the bookstore the first day after class, but unfortunately I still have it. Why? Good question.

Dr. Hemmerly is a Professor who knows his subject and enjoys teaching. It seems a lot of his reviews are negative, refering to his age or voice. Age has nothing to do with ability. For our lectures, he used a speaker most of the times. Even when he didn't, you could still hear him fine. And like any other class, if you can't hear your professor, move up! I enjoyed his humor and teaching style.

Exams: The tests came strictly from the lectures. You simply must take good notes. Do not day dream and miss what he is talking about! He will not test over information not covered in his lecture. I made A's on all test including the final by simply taking thorough notes and spending 2-3 hours studying per exam.

Homework: There was no homework.

Textbook: He never required info apart from the lecture. I refered at times to the textbook and found it very interesting and informative. You do not need it though.

He spoke VERY monotone. He thought he was funny, with some very old, very corny jokes. But it wasn't. He gets mad if you have to leave the class early- even if it's an emergency. He WILL treat you like you're in elementary school. He chased after 2 guys in class one day b/c they left early. He's pretty old... He actually helped write the lab book and some other bio books. So if that tells you anything... I won't take him again. I know that for sure.

Exams: His tests were so confusing. He'd put so many trick questions on there, that it made even a smart person feel dumb. You REALLY had to know your stuff to pass these tests.

Homework: Just reading the chapters, because he couldn't keep our attention.

Textbook: IT'S A GREAT WAY TO KEEP UP WITH WHAT HE'S GOING OVER. Since you can't understand him half the time, they help to know what's on the test.

Stay Away from HEMMERLY!!!!!! He's a nice guy but all he cares about is botany and he will put you asleep everyday and if you were like me and sat in the nosebleed section, you couldn't hear a damn word that was said because he has a problem speaking up and his voice reaches the third row and that's it. if someone coughs or rustles papers, hang it up on hearing him. He does provide helpful outlines, but then he just stands there and talks, using the slide machine, he writes notes on the board about one sentence a month. He does offer extra credit, but i am not a c student and i am struggling! Do not take him you will find yourself asking what you have done to deserve this punishment!

Homework: just take notes/ read the book

Textbook: its huge and you will have to read because half of the time you wont know what the hell he is talking about

He is a sweet old man, but he needs to be at home playing with the grandkids. He knows his stuff, but needs to go back & take communication classes, b/c he is the MOST boring professor I have ever had. Monotone! monotone! If you like non variation in a voice, take him. I think that is why I didnt get an A, really if you cant fight to sit in the front, you wont be able to hear him. He is quiet as anything, and hooks up to a mic from the 1950s and you still cant here. good luck with your descision, not recommended, but you'll be ok if you get stuck with him, but go buy a hearing aid.

Exams: Tests are that bad... just confusing. YOU HAVE TO STUDY YOUR BUTT OFF!

Homework: None, but you need to pretend that it does and read, read, read your notes. He gives out outlines and that is the test. sounds easy, but not really.

Dr. Hemmerly is a great man with a good personality. He is actually a really good professor. His only problem is that he doesn't talk very loud, so it is very hard to hear him. Most of the semester he had a microphone to project his voice, but towards the end of the semester, his batteries died for it and he never got new ones for it. He takes attendance every day. He is very understanding and will put forth the effort to help you as long as you show him you are willing to help yourself.

Exams: The tests were mostly matching, with a few multiple choice here and there. The tests were pretty hard, but if you came to class and took notes and actually tried, the tests were not that bad.

Homework: No homework

Textbook: The textbook really helps clarify things that you miss because Dr. Hemmerly talks so quietly.

this class was seriously terrible for me. i could not hear him in class and then of the few times i did hear him he said crazy things or things i simply could not agree with. the first thing i actually heard in class was him saying that viruses are alive and to be living you must have all characteristics not just one, then i heard him say dinosaurs are not extinct and that just blew my mind.

he is a really really sweet man the few times i spoke to him outside of class but he's just too hard to hear

Exams: some of the things he put on the test were not in the book and as far as any of us could figure out he never spoke of them in class either.

Homework: no homework, but if you take him you must read the book

Textbook: the book honestly saved me from failing

Dr. Hemmerly is an awesome teacher. If I could I would take him for all of my other biology classes. He gives you an outline of what the lecture for the week is going to be and he sticks to it (unlike some of the other professors). However, he does speak in monotone so if you take him sit in the front so you can hear him. I would recommend everyone to take him-----you will be pleased with the class.

Exams: The tests were generally easy if you take good notes and studied before the test. The test usually came straight from the notes.

Homework: There was no homework required but he did ask us to read certain pages. However it was not necessary.

Textbook: I bought the book thinking I would have to use it. But all the needed material came straight from the lecture.

Although Mr. Hemmerly is a nice guy, he cannot keep the classes attention. The classroom is dark, and even with a microphone you can barely hear what he is saying. Unless you enjoy teaching yourself all of the material, then I advise that you look for another teacher.

Exams: Tests are very hard. He uses the material presented closer to test time the most. If he puts it on the board, be prepared to memorize that information.

Homework: reading

Textbook: You have to have the textbook to study, and if you are up to spending a little extra money then I would advise that you get the study guide and lecture notebook. They really do help.

I have never hated a class this much! His lectures are impossibly boring and no one can hear him. Even in the front row it is very hard to hear him. If someone coughs then you have missed something. He is a very sweet man and he tries to make jokes, but do not take this professor...RUN!! FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS CLASS!

Exams: they were directly from the outline that he presented you with, but the outline was very hard to understand!

Homework: studying the outline, going to class, and listening.

Textbook: Use the textbook, for the love of god. His lectures are impossible to follow so the book is your only hope.

The professor knows what he is talking about and tests directly from the notes. if you take coffee to class or something to keep you awake it is an easy class. just study notes and dont bother with the book. the only problem is that this guy makes ben stein look like mr personality

Exams: Study from notes and you'll do fine. The problem is staying awake to take the notes

Homework: none

Textbook: A book is required but dont waste your money on it. he even says in class he isnt gonna use it. he never refers to it for anything. dont bother with it and save some money

He was an ok teacher. He is very old and has to use a microphone. However, he explains everything clearly in class and doesn't mind when you ask questions. Every week he types a set of notes to give to everyone and all you have to do is follow along and fill in the blanks. I suggest getting a seat in the front because it is very hard to hear him.

Exams: He gets his test questions straight from the notes he gives in class.

Homework: There is no homework.

Textbook: You don't use the book in class but it is very important to have when you study for the tests.

He talks in monotone and is very hard to take notes from. He presents everything using a old slide projector. He likes to argue with his students. He will knock down your religious beliefs when it comes to the evolution part of the course. So, if you like your religion and its beliefs, don't take this man.

Exams: no scantron, he will give you a answer sheet

Homework: none

Textbook: don't need the textbook. He comes out and says he teaches his way, but it is a good reference book

super nice teacher. he is alittle old and doesnt speak loud even with a microphone so i would definately sit up front. he also gives great outline handouts for the entire course that cover tested material

Exams: made his own test and answer key if any doubt ask him because he may have gotten the key wrong by mistake. very willing to listen and help

Homework: none study or read

RUN AWAY!! RUN FAR AWAY!! Dr Hemmerly can not speak up to save his life. All you hear is a low mumble all class. His lectures are confusing. Get ready for millions of slides. You will see 50 slides of what appears to be the SAME pine tree. He loves botany and goes into great detail over the plants.

Exams: hard, study the outlines he gives and you will be ok. you can pass without taking a single note in class if you use the outlines to make your own notes.

Homework: none

He was a really nice man, but he speaks very softly and I found it very difficult to understand him. His entire class is lecture with slides and occationally he writes notes on the board. I did well in the class but only because my lab teacher was really good and I was a good bio student in high school.

Good teacher, really knows what he is talking about. However he is very boring. Does not keep my or anyone elses attention it seems. He grades fairly, and does not require a whole lot out of his students. Besides the monotone daily lectures with no variety the class is good.

Exams: Not too tough, just a lot of information.

Homework: No homework.

I thought Dr. Hemmerly was a sweetheart. I really liked the way he presented his slide lecture. It was very slow, relaxed and easy to understand. I would recommend him to any older, easy going student. I loved the class because I felt like I learned something instead of being rushed through. Dr. Hemmerly is an extremely nice professor.
