BIOL 2230 - Microbiology
Compared to the other options for teacher of this class, I would go with Zamora. He was really nice, and taught the material well. It was just so dadgum boring.
Pros: He was a good teacher, the tests were fairly simple as long as you studied a whole lot.
Cons: He was really boring in lecture, which isn't totally his fault. Microbiology is just really boring.

Dr. Zamora is a good professor. He tries to make jokes a lot, and they usually aren't funny. His notes are very good, but they aren't very detailed. You HAVE to attend class to get all of the notes. Basically, just write down everything he says!! Overall, I would definitely suggest taking Dr. Zamora. He may not be the best, but I can't imagine much better for the course. It is very boring material!!! Lab is VERY EASY for this course by the way!

Exams: All of his tests were soley multiple choice, and most of the tests were fairly easy. ALTHOUGHT, he does throw in several tricky questions that you usually didn't even go over in class.

Pros: Gives you powerpoint notes that actually cover EXACTLY what he puts on the test. No surprises.
Cons: Can be a little bit monotone and dry, but really I think it's more a result of the material.
If you have to take intro to micro, DEFINITELY wait and take it with Dr. Zamora. He is one of the best professors I have had from the biology department. He is very patient and easy going unlike many of the other professors. He also does a great job explaining the material and his tests actually reflect his Powerpoints and lectures. They aren't easy, but if you keep up and study what he gives you, you'll be fine. He is also an excellent lab instructor and gives great step-by-step instructions about how to set up all of the activities. If you do wind up taking him, don't waste your money on the textbook or the lab manual. He gives you everything you need.

Pros: prints out power points and hands them out in class

doesn't take attendance

curves every test

gives out study guide for every test

realizes that not everyone taking the class is trying to be a bio major

DO NOT NEED TO BUY A BOOK

we use the free online textbook and it's not even necessary to read that, you only need the powerpoints he gives you

Cons: a little bit boring to listen to, but he gives out the power points which are exactly what he's going to say in class so you don't need to stay
Dr. Zamora is pretty much the best Bio professor you'll get especially if you're not the best at science. Quite seriously, if you study at all there's no reason for you to fail the class because he curves every test if the class average is below 75. He goes over all the answers for every test after he passes them back. Also for the final exam, he literally copy and pastes test questions from the previous tests which makes the final extremely easy. If you do well on the final, he'll count the grade twice. If you do horribly, he'll only count it once.

Dr.Zamora is the nicest most interesting little man ever!I learned many new things in his class.Disecting the baby pig got to me a little but Dr.Zamora shows no mercy! But it's all playful. He never forced anyhting on anyone, even the daily labs!I would recommend him.I will be standing in line to take his microbiology class soon.

Exams: summer class so things went rather speedy! test material came straight from notes and study guides. lab tests were easy if you showed up for most of the labs or looked over the lab book.Curved grades if class avg was under 75.

Homework: NONE!

Textbook: textbook not very costly but optional.i bought it to get the most out of my studying or to clear something up he had lectured over and i didn't understand. there is an online book that has very similar material as book;he recommends it for us poor college kids

Pros: He gives you everything you need.

(The powerpoint slides for lecture and the all the lab notes you need for the lab exams and unknowns.)

Does not take attendance.

Curves tests if class average is low.

Very knowledgeable

Easy A (if you actually take time to study)
Cons: Like everyone else has said, he can be a bit boring. He talks slowly and slightly monotone, but you get use to it after a class or two.
Dr. Zamora was overall a great professor. At first I wasn't quite sure I was going to enjoy his class, but he does grow on you and his class actually turned out to be one of my favorite ones I've taken at MTSU, even though it was a three hour class. I had him for lecture and lab and they were both an easy A. (that is as long as you study) In lecture, he gives you the slides you will be covering at the beginning of class. While the slides contain the main notes you need to study, his lectures help make sense of the slides and he does add one or two extra bits of information that will show up on the exams that weren't on the slides. As for his exams, you really just want to study his slides and any of the extra information you wrote down, no need for the book I didn't even open it. I didn't find the exams hard, but I went to every class and took extra notes. You really want to be sure to know the examples of bacteria that are associated with what you're covering in class. As for lab, you have two unknowns that you can use any notes on you would like. You also have two exams, that are pretty easy. Just BE SURE to memorize the chart he gives you for the final.

So if you actually go to class and pay attention and study the notes, his class is an easy A for sure.

All I can say is: I wish I hadn't taken this course with him......Dr. Zamora is a nice person and very knowledgable, but he is not a good teacher..He is not organized, doesn't keep track of time, and is so lose to a degree that half the students come to class more than 45 minutes late without him caring about it......His notes are very confusing and you will be left with your ability to understand them or go back to ready chapters of the book......Don't Take This Class..Don't Take Dr. Zamora if you want to enjoy your class.......If you HAVE to take this course: then God Bless You..

Exams: The tests were mostly from old exams, but also very confusing. He told us to just study the class notes, but many questions had no relevance to the material we studied.......You could make a 100,but at the same time could easily happen to go down to 75...Very bad....But generally, he curved the tests if everybody did bad..

Homework: No Homework.

Textbook: He didn't go by the book, but he still included chapters of the book in the course outline..From time to time he would bring some hard questions from the book.....You might really need the book to study since his notes are a piece of trash..

If you are taking this class because it is "easy," BEWARE! It is not difficult to make a B, but it will take some effort to make an A. The professor is amusing and keeps the class's attention. Class never starts on time and usually ends early. You could probably skip every lab, but you wouldn't want to because it's genuinely FUN. The course matter is simple enough and only requires memorization. Somehow, though all this sounds "easy," class exam averages were 77-84. Multiple Choice/Fill in the blank tests are not usually hard, but Dr. Zamora is great at asking questions you didn't think would be on there, or questions where the answers are easily confused. The point is: Don't take this class for an easy A, take it because it really teaches you a lot about microbiology's place in the food industry... and you get to make a lot of VERY cool things in lab :)

Exams: USUALLY graded fairly, some questions were way out of left field.

Homework: just studying

Textbook: Don't buy the textbook, the lecture tests are straight from the notes.

Do buy the lab book, a lot of questions from lab tests are from the book, also it helps because lab notes are quite random.

Pros: Very nice, relates well to students and LOVES microbiology.
Cons: Very slow, the lab drags on, and sometimes it is not clear what information from the lab is important (e.g., testable).
Dr. Zamora is a really nice, chill guy who relates well to students and clearly loves to teach. He is quirky but in an endearing way. The unknown labs are fun and the midterm was pretty easy. However the final left a really bad taste in my mouth - you're required to memorize a huge cache of information for no apparent reason other than to have something to take a test on.

This class was soooo much fun. Dr. Zamora is hilarious and the class is food micro, so your going to learn a lot of material that is relevant to you, because we all eat! Take this class! Your going to make wine, beer, cheese, yogurt and tempeh(veggie burger).

Exams: There are 3 in class test, that come straight from the notes! The final in comprehensive and also come straight from the notes. There are 2 lab test, make sure to get all the results and know the media that was used.

Homework: none

Pros: You really only need to show up a couple days before the exam to get the review, and the day of the test of course. He doesn't take attendance, and doesn't seem to mind that only 30 out of 150 actually go to class. There is always a pretty big curve on tests too.
Cons: Its a lot of self learning. To pass the test you need to read the online text book as well as study the terms/ concepts he gives you. If you have any past biology experience it shouldn't be too bad. I only spent maybe 3 hours tops studying for the tests and I always made a A.

Pros: Exams come straight from his Powerpoint notes he provides in class. He also curves the grades to a class average of 70 if it is lower than that.
Cons: Memorize the notes, especially the examples of bacteria, if you want to make an A.
The information he gives in class is interesting, but it does not really help on exams. Study his Powerpoints and you will do fine.

Pros: Sweet, approachable, curves if class average is below 75.
Cons: Lots of material on tests.
Dr. Zamora was very nice and funny. The class is extremely boring.....extremely boring.....

There are 4 tests and a comprehensive final. Best advice I can give is do not depend on the final for a good grade and make sure you have a very good lab grade. The 4 tests were moderately hard as long as you study and memorize what kind of bacteria fits where, but the final was atrocious. The final does not replace any grade, but can count for more points if you do well, but I honestly don't think anyone in our class did well on it.

Most people do not come to class. It seems unnecessary because he goes over power points, but there were numerous things he mentioned in class that ended up on the exam.

I think Dr. Zamora is the person to take for lab, I definitely have not heard good things about other professors in micro. As long as you are willing to put in the effort you will make an A.

He is an interesting little man. I had him for a three hour night class, and I found it very painful to attend. I feel sorry for him because he had to entertain us with such a boring subject for such a long time. He is a very monotone and slow speaking man, but I don't hate him for it. I don't think even Adam Sandler could make microbiology fun. Dr. Zamora does really know his stuff, though. He takes FOREVER to get through one powerpoint slide, and a lot of the stuff he says you'll never see on a test. But, if you study the slides and write down the things he says more than once, you'll do fine on them. He also is obsessed with asking questions about the names of bacteria and what they do, so be sure and study those. Other than being boring, he's a great teacher.

Pros: Professor Zamora knows his stuff. He is willing to answer any questions you have. Although he reads straight from the powerpoint, he will elaborate what he talks about. He gives you a study guide for each tests and thats all you need to study. He insists that you buy the book, but I didn't. I've made B's on all the tests, and thats without barely any studying.
Cons: He can get a little boring.
Overall, he is a great teacher. This class is an easy A. Plus, he knows this type of bio class ISN'T for bio majors, so he knows you are trying your hardest. Oh and when picking your lab teacher, try to get Sade Dunn. She is awesome. I know with both these teachers that i will not have to worry about my grade.
