MA 1713 - Calculus I
I heard this teacher was wonderful for Trig, but for Calculus I would never recommend him. He does not teach well at all. He is so nice, and you can tell that he is smart, but he does not know how to teach Calculus. I highly recommend finding another teacher!!!
Pros: He's very nice, occasionally funny
Willing to help outside of class
Cons: Does not explain problems well

Pros: + Super witty, easy-going

+ Easy homework

+ Great explanation of the material
Cons: - Tests were a pain, computer-based

- The PC lab will be your home, as the tests and quizzes must be done there
I took Dr. Banik's College Algebra class for my first semester at State. I went in fully expecting the class to be a total pain, after having been out of college for several years (non-traditional student). I was pleasantly surprised.

Dr. Banik is not only quick-witted and hilarious, but also extremely intelligent and makes the material seem easy. He loves letting class out early for no big reason, but you will go through a lot of material. My advice also is that if you get the auditorium classroom, be sure you have great vision or sit in the front, because straining to see a projector in a classroom full of 300 people can get old.

The exams are fairly easy, if you study. The quizzes aren't that bad either.

Loved the class, he made it fun.

Pros: Very funny guy.

Knows what he's teaching.

Keeps the class entertained and involved.

Always willing to help you, whether it's in class, or during office hours.
Cons: If I had to think of one, it'd be that he loves to put trig functions on the tests.
I had Dr. Banik for regular Caculus I, not honors. I will say, that if you choose this man to be your teacher, you can't go wrong. He is always cracking funny jokes, while keeping the class involved in the lesson, no matter how boring it might seem. He does an excelent job of explaining how he does every problem on a step-by-step basis, and if you get confused, just raise your hand, and he is more than happy to help you out. The homework is always closely related to the in-class examples; thus, the homework really isn't all that bad. The test can sometimes be a little tricky, but he does give partial credit for steps that you worked right on the problem.

Mr. Banik is the best mathematics teacher at MSU anyone can take. He explains everything really well. He's a really goofy guy and will make you laugh constantly. The class is never boring because it is so fast pace. You are constantly taking notes so attendance is important. He posts the notes and powerpoints online but it can be hard to understand if you missed class and didn't hear it being explained. His tests are on everything he goes over in class. If you study for the tests and do the study guide. You'll make an A. The online hw and quizzes are really important because they are good practice. You can use your notes on the quizzes too. Overall he is one of the best teachers I've had at MSU. TAKE HIM!

Pros: He explains things well! His tests are really easy, especially if you've had any experience with trig in high school. I am taking this course as a freshman and have an A.

Get out early a lot.

Banik does not teach class on Fridays.
Cons: The homework is online, which is annoying. You have to buy the book to get the online access code for this class. We never actually use the book in class or for homework or anything, but it is a good resource for extra problems for practicing before tests.
Really try to get him for trig, and if you don't sign up for this class early than you will be left with staff. Staff classes will be smaller though (40ish). Banik's class was about 200.

He is great! He makes jokes to keep you entertained and class always gets out early! He doesn't necessarily "prepare" for class, but this isn't a problem b/c he just knows his stuff, you leave early, and are ahead of all the other classes always! He gives a great review for tests, and tests are always easier than the hw and quizzes so you are well prepared. You also get bonus quizes sometimes if you show up for class and if you miss 2 days or less you get bonus pts!

Cons: NONE.
TESTS

Exactly like the practice tests--with different problems.

HOMEWORK

There is a great amount of homework, but honestly, you can't get away from HW in math.

QUIZZES

He will help you with anything you don't understand before the quiz. The quiz are always easier than the corresponding HW.

LECTURE

He explains everything with great detail. Also, he cracks jokes constantly. He is a very witty man, and his lecture are worth coming to just for that...and the way he explains the Trig. I'm miserable at math, and I did very well in this class. Trust me. You will do so much better if you go to the lectures.

EXAM

Comprehensive. Not fun. Any Trig teacher you take you will take the same exam.

Pros: Makes learning Cal I easy by explaining everything.

He puts the problems worked in class online after class.

Fun and funny guy.

Homework can be difficult at times but you have plenty of tries to get it right.
Cons: None!
Dr. Banik explains everything in class very clearly and answers any questions people may have about the problems. He also gives extra credit problems before every test, which is very useful if you feel like you may need 3 or 4 extra points. He gives partial credit on tests as well.

His teaching methods are solid, as long as you are in class. He explains everything thoroughly and in a way that can relate to the students - he is also quite entertaining, more often than not the class will have ended up laughing at his comments more than once a class. While he does put the problems worked in class online as well, you don't benefit from his explanations of the problems if you skip class... in other words, go to class. It helps. Seriously.

The best part about Banik is the homework he gives. Usually most of the problems are pretty easy with one or two more difficult problems thrown in. If you have any questions about the problems you can talk to him and he'll explain it to you. He even gives you a ton of tries to get the problems right, so you have plenty of room to find the correct answer to a question if you get it wrong a couple of times. If you rework the problems to where you always finish the homework with 100% you will almost certainly finish well in the class.

Pros: Funny, makes jokes, explains material well (if you had Calculus 1 in high school because you know what you're doing), puts the notes online
Cons: He goes through the lessons REALLY FAST, the tests can be hard if you don't study
If you had Calculus 1 in high school, you should definitely get Banik. He goes pretty fast on what he is teaching, so it's ends up being like a review if you already know the material. However, if you don't have a good foundation in calculus (like me) because you never took it in high school, then you will think he goes too fast and doesn't explain it enough. I felt so lost when I learned something new because I didn't know how to work the problem myself, and I ended up having to go to tutoring.

Class is very easy. I took Calculus in high school and thought Calc at State was going to be as difficult if not worse. Definitely not true. Banik is a great teacher who works out every single step (even the ones you wouldn't think to include) and will work with you to make sure you understand the material. He tells you exactly what kinds of problems to study for and his tests almost mirror the study guide he gives you. He also has a personality and a sense of humor, which is something hard to come by in a math teacher, let alone a good teacher. Homework is like problems worked in class, so just go to class to understand the material.

DEFINITELY RECOMMEND! By the way... This is regular Calculus, not Honors.

Pros: He goes over about 90% of the homework using different numbers in his examples during class.

He is really funny and often cracks jokes whenever the computer is acting slow.

Please please do not be hesitant in asking him a question, because he will stop and help you.

He puts enough study material online for every test in order for you to at least pass if you haven't gone to class.
Cons: You will pass if you just straight up skip every class and not do your homework.
He really cares about his students and will not make fun of your question. He always tells us stories about the "intelligent" questions asked from his other classes to make you feel better. He is definitely the best Cal 1 teacher.

Pros: Mr. Banik is entertaining and helps you to stay focused on the subject.
Cons: None
Gives four test (60%) and a final (25%) The final is mandatory and comprehensive and can be counted twice (once as a final and once by replacing your lowest test grade during the semester if needed. Several homework assignments are made through webassign.net and they count 15% of your grade. Webassign ($110) is required and it comes with the ebook. If you want a "real" book then google the ISBN and pick it up for about $50. Test are moderately hard with averages in the low 80's. The test are pretty much like his notes and by the way he give great notes.

Pros: Explains everything in detail

Very funny and friendly

Cons: Too smart for his own good

Open ended tests
You won't regret taking Dr. Banik. If something goes over your head all you have to do is ask and he'll explain. He is VERY funny and VERY intelligent. He does tons of step by step practice problems in class. Brush up on your Trig because he loves it but it won't make or break your grade whatsoever. His test are open-ended but he grades very leniently. For instance, sometimes you might get the answer wrong but if you show your work step by step he may only take off one point on 20 point question for the step you did wrong.
