Dr. Abbott is VERY ENTHUSIASTIC about Biology. However, due to this he goes off on a lot of tangents. I almost never went to class and still got a B+. He's very interesting to listen to, but he really doesn't teach you that much. It is not necessary to attend lecture, only lab. You MUST read the textbook. Everything for the exams comes from the book.

Cons: Notes/lecture is confusing
I had very limited biology experience coming in- I'd never taken an AP/honors/extensive bio class in high school and was really nervous. I felt lost the first day when he started lecturing, and for a while I didn?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ót understand the readings. That said, I ended up acing the class and wanting (briefly) to become a bio major. He really knows how to teach in a way that the info actually seems important and fascinating. And pulling an A in his class gives you this genuine confidence in the basics of biology, especially if it?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ós a requirement for your major.

His tests are more conceptual than factual, set up so that you can still answer questions even if you haven?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ót memorized miniscule details- but you REALLY have to understand some core concepts. (Note: questions are based largely on the book, but he includes several from lecture) Once, I had the chance to look at another professor?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ós exam after getting a B on Abbott?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ós. I found that I would have gotten a 100 because in studying for his exam, I?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ód covered the material in a much greater depth than was tested in the other class. I still feel like I have a heads up on other kids who had a Bio 107 professor that focused more on rote memorization.

If you?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??óre just looking for the grade and are good with cramming facts in your head, it wouldn?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ót be bad to take it with another professor. And if you don?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ót have much bio experience and are a slow learner, like me, there will be some nights when you?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??óre up at 3am in the study lounge, struggling over bio notes. But he?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ós very accessible, and bio lab boosts your grade, and if you put in a lot of effort it all works out. Given the chance, I?â?ó?ó?ÇÜ?¼?ó?Ç??ód still take the class over with him and would recommend anyone to at least try him out for the first days of the semester.

Prof. Abbott is a really nice and funny person, but he isn't really the best teacher. His lectures are all over the place and they really don't help towards the exams. Prof. Abbott joked around so much and just talked about random stuff instead of giving a normal, organized breakdown of the subject matter. If you want an A in the class, make sure you do the reading and really pay attention to the little details in the text. Abbott does give study guides, but they are incredibly long that they're almost pointless. I used it for the first exam, but not for the last three and got an A just by sticking to the text. Lab does play a good amount into your final grade (30%) so make sure you take time to study for the quizzes, because they do add up. Prof. Abbott does scale at least some, since my real average at the end of the semester was an 88.375 (exams and lab included), but i got an A for the class. So just make sure you keep on track with the reading and take your time with it- don't just rush through and assume you got all the info, because he does focus on types of questions that can catch you off guard. Like he says about the exams, "This one's a good one, but just make sure you know your stuff."

this man is NOT the biology teacher. For one his head TA cant help you for anything..he posts the 15 page study quide online like three days before the exam. Then abbott holds an hour long review session inwhich questions are asked but nothing is re-taught. I leave class with more questions but no real answeres. he doesnt use notes, a tape recorder wont help because all he does is make sensless jokes about his life in class and overall it has nothing to do with bio. By the time he satared using powerpoint and the white boards...2/3 of the class withdrew. I was told he was good but he sux. If you must suffer from him at least get tutoring form one of your Lab TA's or someone else wiht good rating form the BIO department. He is more of a stand -up comedian in class than a serious bio teacher. refuses the make simple crap simple!! If you must suffer form this insane man, just know I'll be thinking and rooting for you.

Thought Abbott is pretty unorganized and confusing during lectures, he's really really really interesting and defintely not boring. He's really motivating. I went to lectures to just to be entertained really. He has a review sheet online that tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. Just do those and you'll get As on all the tests. I had him for the first half of the year and excelled, and then we switched professors for some weird reason and my grade dropped about 3 letter grades. He was awesome and you defintely learn alot. Just do the review sheets and glance over the chapters. Lectures aren't even necessary.

People will be back and forth with Abbott due to the way he teaches. I personally say he is great. If you do the review packets, even a few days before a test and answer the questions by using the book and making lengthy answers and typing it all out you will do well. You do not need to do the weekly readings to do well. If you start the study guide 5 or so days before a test, go through the review packet answer the questions thoroughly using the book, you will do well. I had a decent bio background and I did well, you do not need to have a stellar background, just bust your behind come test time. He is also extremely knowledgeable on everything bio related, and if you approach him he will help you with anything.

Pretty much, I loved Dr. Abbot, plain and simple. He's an amazing professor, and he makes class really interesting, I never wanted to miss a lecture. Granted, his tests are rough, but it really isn't a problem if you study enough for them. I didn't always use his lecture notes to study for the exams though, mostly the book. His final is non-cumulative too, so it really isn't a big deal. He's super funny and is just an awsome teacher to have even if his lectures are packed. Somebody needs to tell him to clip his eyebrows though.....

Professor Abbott is one of the best professors, he really loves biology and tries to get all his students to love biology just as much. He's really animated and makes his students laugh, I actually looked forward to class. He provides study guides and review sessions for exams, which help a lot because his exams are challenging but not unfair. He writes on the board and presents the material in a way that is understandable. Just remember to come to lecture and study - he basically tells you what material to focus on. Everyone should take Abbott for Biology 107, there's no reason to get lower than a B in class.

Bottem line: Abbott is a good professor. He goes out of his way to describe the subject matter. He's very passionate about the subject which will definitely provide a good laugh or too for the class when he gets worked up. The only thing is that you can't b-s this class. If you want to do even marginally well, you seriously need to study for the tests. Even though the subject matter can get pretty f-ing boring, especially the organic chem part, the class is almost always entertaining. I always went to lecture because it was fun, and the class was always laughing whether it was at him or with him.

Abbott is very enthusiastic and defintely know his Biology! However, during his [very] unorganized lectures, he will frequently go off on tangents. He'll try to lighten the mood of the room by cracking jokes, but that only leads to another joke, then another...

His study guides seem to cover everything...except for what's on the exam. Studying and memorizing is not enough for his course - you need to actually LEARN.

Utilize the TAs and PAY ATTENTION to the concepts you'll be going over in lab. Read the book and go to lecture if you feel like you need to (you'll know by the third week.)

If you took ap biology in high school and did okay in it and think this class is going to be easy you will be surprised. This professor seems like the better professors in Storrs in terms of teaching biology, but when you go into the class look at what works for you whether is working on

Bio on your own or going to lectures. At times the lectures seem useless in knowing what would be on the test because he's not specific so basically know the chapters inside and out.

Dr. Abbott was an amazing professor. I never missed the class once simply because I loved listening to him lecture. He is really into bio, so much that its sort of weird. His exams are, in a word, RIDICULOUS! No matter how much you study and even if you do the whole 15 page study guide, you are screwed. His wording is so confusing that even if you know all of it, you'll still get a C. Oh and it's pretty much impossible to keep up with the reading, so if you can manage that, good for you.

Abbott is a cool fun guy. However, his exams are waaay too difficult. He'll ask 50, tricky, multiple choice questions about 11 chapter; it's ridiculous! His classes weeded-out hundreds of wannabe-doctors, just because of its difficulty/stress level.

But if you're stuggling, do not hesitate to meet privately with him; he will help you with study strategies or whatever else you need.

Just go to him early in the semester, or else he'll think you're a joke.

My favorite professor at UConn by far. He has no overhead notes, does not really "follow" the book, he just talks, so pay attention. His exams are hard and stressful, but just do the study guide and you will be fine, as long as you learn, not memorize. DEFINITELY TAKE ABBOTT IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE!!!

Dr.Abbott is the best!! Not only for biology 107 but for high school. Those of you who didn't have him for biology in highschool really missed out. He makes even the most boring subjects awesome!! There is no other teacher we know that can make learning about a tree or even dirt so exciting

his lectures can be really powerful, but they don't help you much for the exam. he gives good study guides, but they're so long that it's hard to cover everything and know it well. make sure you do all the reading before the lectures to keep up. the good news is that there's a nice curve at the end of the semester that pulled my grade up. take his class if you're actually really interested in biology.

Obviously 1107 is a hard class for freshman since everybody is still trying to figure out college and the way he starts off really quick can throw you off guard. Overall his 50 multiple-choice tests are kinda tricky with "A and B" "All of the Above" etc and he tries to set up the exams for a 70 average so the class is hard, but doable. The lab is really boring and the TA's spend more time lecturing than letting us do experiments. Also make sure you study for the Lab Practical just like its an exam!

I had Professor Abbott for the first half of Biology 107 lecture. He is by far my favorite professor of my college career. His tests, in my opinion, are only REALLY difficult if you don't study. I did great in the class. The class is challenging, but Abbott definitely made the lectures enjoyable. Maybe you'll fail, maybe you won't, but you will definitely leave the class with a smile.
