Pros: - Engaging Lectures

- Good use of Visuals

- Willing to answer questions

- Wants students to succeed
Dr. Byers is a great teacher. If you have to opportunity, you should take his classes. He is excited about his field, and it comes across well, engaging students and bringing them in, even when their interests do not overlap with his own. His lectures are interesting and to the point. He also has some pretty cool stories - like going to Antarctica for 6 weeks - many of which are included in relevant lectures. He includes visuals (pictures, videos, diagrams, graphs - some have been important for tests) to drive home his points. He is always willing to pause to explain or answer questions, and during long classes gives a few minute break. I always felt prepared for tests and that his lectures provided me with a firm grasp of the material. He is overall an engaging lecturer and an excellent teacher.

Pros: -Great lectures

-Interactive class

-Prof wants you to do well
Cons: -4 tests make your entire grade
Whether you are looking for another honors course or are seriously interested in this class, your expectations will be exceeded. Dr. Byers teaches the first half, which covers marine ecosystems. For test one, he covers the general physical and chemical constraints of marine systems. Test two material dives deeper into specific ecosystems. The class is small, and it is taught in a lecture style with intermittent discussion. He moves at a good pace but always makes sure that everyone is on the same page. Overall, the course requires studying, but you will do well (median test scores around a 90). Dr. Byers is one of the best professors in the department.

Pros: You will actually WANT to come to class. Very passionate about his field, and it shows
Dr. Byers teaches the marine sections of this course and is a great lecturer. He uses several forms of teaching media; slideshows and videos (clips from documentaries, etc.) and tells stories from his personal experience too, all which combine to make his lessons memorable and engaging. Even if you are not particularly interested in marine ecology, he will make you love it! Take a class with him if you can and you will not regret it.

First-Year Odyssey Seminar
5*****
Pros: -Engaging

-Light workload

-Interesting lectures
Cons: -None to speak of, if you are at all interested you will love this class
Dr. Byers understands the purpose of a freshman odyssey course. The Ecology of Invasive Species will be an great subject for anybody interested in the biological sciences, premed or research based. The lectures were fascinating and he supplements them with notes from his own research. Conversely the workload was very light, participation and one or two presentations.

Pros: Great Lecturer, interesting person
Dr. Byers is one of the best lecturers I have ever seen. He is very organized and uses videos and outside sources very well, tries to make everything interesting and brings in his own amazing experiences. This class was pretty easy for me because it was just him lecturing (although he tries and includes some engaging activities) and then recall general concepts and information on the tests.
