RUSS 1001
Elementary Russian I
4****
Pros: Great for intro classes. Helps you out a lot. Easy class if you pay attention and look over the book.
Cons: Not always very clear. Confusing at times.I don't feel like he prepares you for higher level courses in Russian.
Nice. will help you out when you ask for it. Extra Credit is given both for final and final grade.

INTRO RUSS CINEMA
5*****
Pros: He is really interested in the material, which makes for a good class. Makes jokes and tries to keep students interested.
Cons: Some of the videos are hard to watch...very different style than American film. Accent is hard to understand sometimes, but you get used to it.
This class is one of the most enjoyable that I've taken at UGA, and that is partly because of Dr. Byrd. He is very kind and truly hopes to pass on knowledge about russian cinema culture.

Pros: Very nice man, wants his students to learn. Made the class very interesting, picked great films to watch.
Cons: Only dull thing about the class was the subject material, but this is just a matter of personal preference.

RUSS 1002
ELEMENTARY RUSSIAN
5*****
Pros: Great teacher, really cares about his students and getting them at the level of proficiency they need to be at for Russ 2000. Genuinely nice guy, and a great class.
Cons: Doesn't always correct you when your pronounce things incorrectly or give the wrong answer, can lead to confusion later.
Go to class, do the homework, and study his study guides and you should do well on the tests. There are enough grades in this class and enough opportunities to do well that it should be easy to get out with an A. Great class, highly recommended.

RUSS 1001
Elementary Russian I
5*****
Pros: you're learning Russian!
Cons: attendance policy

kind of a fast pace for material, which is hard with Russian, and then you have several days of review to kind of catch up

textbook is very expensive
I loved this Russian class! I was stressed a lot though because you are speaking and practicing every single day. It is good though because everything is reinforced. Every word or grammar concept is discussed in class. This isn't a language class where you have to teach yourself some at home. You have homework every day to reinforce what you've learned in class, and you'll start writing a lot from the beginning. Not a big deal, but if you want to learn Russian, you will. If you want to take it because you think it's kinda cool or whatever and that's it, you might be overwhelmed. A lot of people don't take 1002, so the people who are dedicated and like it stay. But I don't mean to say the class is super hard! You can make an A, no problem, but you can't just slack off. By the way, the alphabet is not hard at all. Russian isn't hard because it has a foreign alphabet. ;P

RUSS 1001
Elementary Russian I
5*****
Pros: Excellent professor, one that genuinely wants you to do well in his class. Extremely helpful in every way possible.
One of the best professors I've had thus far at UGA. Lots of easy grades makes it hard to not pass this class. Plus, he does a great deal of review for every quiz/test along with putting review material online to help you out. Professor Byrd genuinely wants you to do well in his class and if you work with him it's an easy A.

He is a great professor and i'm sad i won't have him when i take 2001. The class will take a decent amount of studying, i mean russian is not known as the easiest language for a reason. But he cares about his students and does a good job teaching the class. If you want to do really well, a LOT of time is required to do all the pages in the workbook that he asks for, but he only takes up one night's homework every week and a half or so.

Nabokov
5*****
Pros: This is an amazing class. The material is, obviously if you know anything about Nabokov, mind-blowing, and Dr. Byrd really knows his stuff.

He's also really great about grading papers and giving detailed comments. I write very well and above my expected level and I feel that he really understood this and took it into account.

He is a joy to listen to and work with. TAKE THIS CLASS, no matter what your major!
Cons: NONE!!!

Pros: Knows what he is talking about, plus he's a native English speaker which helps for the intro level.

Has a dry sense of humor.

Prompt grader, always available for questions.
Cons: Very very dull, he isn't a lively person whatsoever. Also has a stammer so you hear lots of "uhh uhh uhh'" type things. Otherwise, no complaints.
Definitely a good professor. A bit dry, but this is introduction to Russian.

He is a good professor but his lecturing can get kind of boring. A really nice guy, he is relatively lax about missing class and you can always make up quizzes and turn in homework late. Interesting class although Russian is hard.
