MIBO 3500 - Introductory Microbiology
Pros: Dr. Dustman is a wonderful professor! While her teaching style seems elementary during lecture, it was much appreciated when it came to test time. She always answers questions thoroughly in class and really makes sure everyone understands the material before moving on. Exams weren't that bad. Most questions were straight from the powerpoints or took some application from the slide material. There are 4 exams, the 4th given during finals, but is not cumulative. The 3 highest scores are taken so if you do well on the first 3, you don't have to take the 4th. She gives a fair amount of extra credit, as well. I don't recommend buying the book because you can do very well in the class with just the slides.
Cons: Sometimes lecture is boring because of how thorough she is. One of the TAs in my section was on a power trip, but you don't really have to deal with them unless there is a grading issue.

Pros: Dr. Dustman is a great teacher! She tries to make everything understandable in lecture. The tests are hard if you don't study the powerpoints and take notes in class, but you don't need the book at all because the slides she posts are very detailed. She also randomly, but sometimes gives an extra credit pop quiz every now and then.
There are some in-class group assignments throughout the semester, but they aren't very hard.

Pros: Dr. Dustman was a really great professor. She implemented a new style of teaching this past semester by only holding class once per week for group activities and putting lectures into online podcasts for use during our own time. I enjoyed this method because I never had to worry about missing an important detail during lecture. She was always very thorough, and from what I could tell, very passionate about teaching.
Cons: While I am a fan of the podcast method, there were sections where the listening time required exceeded that of what regular lecture would have allowed. This bothered some students.
There were 4 none cumulative tests and we could drop the lowest grade. She provides sample exam questions. Attendance was mandatory to receive points for participation during in-class activities.

Pros: This semester she tried something new. Instead of coming to class two times a week, we only came once depending on what day your group was assigned. On the off day, you were responsible for watching the podcasts posted.
Cons: Due to not being in class, you basically had to teach the material to yourself, and rely on email to answer questions on the material.

Pros: Extra credits really helped my grade out. It's graded based on efforts not whether it's correct or not. She's also really nice when you go see her at her office hours. She tries her best to help you understand the materials and give you study tips when you asks.
I like her :)

Pros: Extra credit given at the beginning of class on test review days. Be on time. Drops one test! Plan ahead! If you just do well on the first 3 tests, you won't have to take the last one! However, the 1st and 4th tests are the easiest.
Cons: Weekly blog due in 48 hours! Mine was due Saturday mornings! so I forgot to do like 3. Uses a WEIRD point system. Tests are 35 points each. She labels individual questions in the test (.5 pts). This might not sound like a lot, but it is.
Dr. Dustman is really nice. She loves what she teaches. She just started teaching the class using podcasts. It is a lot of self-discipline to make yourself listen to the podcasts. I hated the podcasts at first, but when I finally focused, they were actually pretty interesting. Some people like to just read the slides bc it seems like she just reads the slides to you on the podcasts. But listening to the podcasts will actually make it easier to study and remember the material bc it'll actually help you understand the material and speed up the memorization process. If you sit there trying to memorize just the slides, it's just a lot of random facts in your head.

MIBO 3510L
Introductory Microbiology Laboratory
5*****
Pros: FUN, FUN, FUN! Make your own yogurt for the last lab.
Cons: None
It's fun inoculating bacteria, staining, observing under microscope, and all sorts of stuff done with different types of media. Super easy because all we basically do is swab some microorganism culture and swab it onto a media, put it into a box to incubate, leave, go in lab 2 days later and observe what microorganism did in the media. Sounds boring but it's fascinating what these creatures do. Have an Unknowns project that's extremely easy, no need to write a paper but just fill out a report form. So much more fun than physics, gen chem, and ochem labs!!!!

MIBO 3510L
Introductory Microbiology Laboratory

Pros: Easy lab. Just show up and do the stuff. Recycled tests.
Cons: Because you always have to incubate lab experiments, sometimes we end up doing like 4 different labs in a day. It's a lot to do in 1 lab period. Not hard just gets confusing.
Easiest lab I've ever taken, and most FUN lab. She gives extra credit sometimes at the lab lecture, but it's at such an inconvenient time. You prob don't really need to go to lab lecture. Read the slides before class. They give pop quizzes like every other day that are easy points. You will need these 1-3 point quizzes in the end. Practical and lecture tests are recycled. Find the old stuff. It'll speed along the studying process. Make sure you memorize ALL your MEDIA early on. You will be tested on ALL of it, and it'll just make your life easier.

MIBO 3500

Pros: Very accommodating. She takes the time to correct her mistakes even if it means regrading everyones papers. Also she gives lots of extra credit opportunities, and there are weekly homework assignments that boost your grade.
Cons: Podcasts are boring. Weekly homework is tedious.
The class only meets once a week to do an activity. There are no lectures so you have to stay on top of the material yourself which can be difficult. She makes podcasts which cover what will be on the test.

Pros: it's on your own. she puts out podcasts and it's your responsibility to do them. quiz every week. tests are pretty straightforward. it's not difficult to get an A in the class, even if you don't make A's on tests
Cons: workload outside of class is heavy, but easily manageable..
she's so willing to help you. I go to office hours almost weekly, and she helps me so so so much. SO NICE. if you don't understand something, she will figure out another way to explain it.

Pros: Class only one day a week

She explains well

Engages students
Cons: Lots of work at home
I thought I would hate MIBO but after taking Dr Dustman I wanted to change my major to MIBO. She is an awesome teacher! very helpful, her tests are straight forward. The class activities force you to be engaged and so do the weekly quizzes. The only con is that since its a hybrid you have to do most of the work on your own, by listening to long pod casts.

Pros: Cool professor and very approachable. Gives A TON of extra credit in class, SO GO TO CLASS! The extra credit helps so much in the end. I didn't even have to take the final!
Cons: Tests are difficult, but if you can memorize every word on a powerpoint then you're golden. The worst part is that her tests are out of 35 points, so miss 2 or 3 multiple choice questions and there goes your A on that test.

Pros: Dr. Dustman is funny and highly approachable. Does a great job making her students feel welcome rather than brushing them off.
Cons: Practical questions can be tricky, so be careful.
Fun lab. Not a whole lot of work compared to chem and ochem. Individual labs are not graded. A much more fun and relaxed atmosphere than I was used to in labs.

Pros: Explains difficult material very thoroughly. Test material straight from lecture slides (never read the book and still got an A). Not an easy A, but with a little effort you will get the A. Lots of extra credit opportunities and can drop a test grade (including final).

Pros: Nice, helpful lady
Dr. Dustman is a wonderful lady. The class, however, is extremely detailed, which may make it more annoying than it should be. MIBO is interesting but the exams will test you in specific things. I heard this class was an 'easy' class. Not true, you still have to study HARD
