Definitely buy the book because you will need it.
Pros: She's really enthusiastic in lecture which keeps it interesting and goes into a lot of detail. The tests aren't very hard if you follow her study guides and usually had a bonus question or two from the text or a random fact she mentioned in lecture.
Cons: The tests sometimes will have short answer (like a sentence) questions or ask you to explain a concept in addition to multiple choice & true/false questions. The study guides also require a lot of reading from the book.

Pros: Very Knowledgeable Teacher

Good lecturer

Occasional bonus points on "low attendance" days

Fair tests: not too hard and not too easy

Cons: I had breakout sessions every week with a two page essay on Georgia politics.

Must sit near the front of the lecture room if you are taking notes
She is honestly one of the best POLS teachers here (definitely not the easiest though). You will stay engaged with the material since she cracks good jokes. She is also very nice, but the TAs for breakout can be hit or miss. Three tests and an optional final, with participation/homework grades from breakout. I'd definitely recommend taking her.

Pros: One of the best professors on campus!

She answers any & all questions posted on the discussion board on elc.

Genuinely cares about her students.
Cons: Breakout can be a hit or miss depending on TA.

2 page papers due every two weeks in breakout.
Dr. Haynes is incredible. I didn't go to all of the lectures but I read the chapters and did the study guides, so I made an A on all three tests. Her tests are straightforward. She gives bonus points on low attendance days & hints about test questions. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking this class. If you want an A, just have a good grasp on the material, & it's yours.

I actually took this online and found it very doable. You definitely need the textbook for study guides and the tests. You will have to check elc everyday and will have to do work for the class at least every other day. I worked full-time and took another online class and had plenty of time to complete the work,so I would say that the online version a great alternative to the usual political science class with breakout sessions and what not.

Pros: Very organized course. I could find everything. Forced me to do the reading. Checklists and smaller modules were helpful. I liked the frequent testing and even though they were open book, I had to think about the questions a lot. But that made me know the material. She answered all my questions, and gave a lot of feedback. I really liked the group project, too.
Cons: It is a lot of work, and I did not think it was busy work, not if you really gave it some thought. You can make an A or a B if you do the work. So if you are lazy and expect a couple of tests, do not take this class.
She was very responsive and I thought we covered a lot of material very thoroughly. I know a lot more about what is going on now in politics.

Pros: Dr. Haynes is one of the best professors in her field. She's so knowledgeable, and her lectures are so much more than just information from a powerpoint. She accommodates student, and you can tell that her students are the most important thing to her. I got lunch with her during the semester to go over my paper topic and pick her brain on grad school options. She is an invaluable resource, and if you take the time to get to know her, it will be extremely advantageous to you. Hands down the best professor I've had.
Cons: Pop quizzes to check attendance, but if you pay attention in class or do the reading, they are very easy.
If you are a political science major, you need to take her at some point.

Pros: Interesting lecturer, fun class. She is awesome.
Cons: The Maymester class moved quickly and and there was a lot of reading. Pop quizzes keep you from procrastinating. Tests are long and extensive but not bad when you read, go to class, and study.
This was probably one of my favorite classes I've ever had. Dr. Haynes is super nice and funny. She really knows how to take material and make you learn and think about it. I didn't miss a single class because I actually wanted to go for once.

Pros: Dr Haynes is a great professor, very personable, and responsive to student concerns. She's passionate about her subject and making sure that her students care about the subject as well. Plus there was an issue with my grade at the end of the semester and she had no problem looking at it and correcting the error. All in all, a class act.

Pros: Dr. Haynes really knows her stuff. She doesn't even need to read the powerpoint and she goes off on really interesting tangents. Everything she talks about is always relevant though. So make sure to pay attention.
Cons: You need to get the textbook. She gives lectures in class and those powerpoint slides are uploaded online, but the test does go over book information that we do not cover in class and she frequently gives pop quizzes to make sure you are doing the readings.
The class is always interesting and will keep you awake. After each test, she plays documentaries in class as a "cool down" from all the information that gets tossed at you. The tests vary in structure. They include: true/false, fill in the blank (with no word bank), short answer, essay question, multiple choice, and list questions. If you do the readings in the book and you pay attention in class, it is totally possible to rock a solid A in the class. Also, she is always willing to help students out if you go into her office hours or email her. She is a really cool person and I highly recommend taking this class.

Pros: Dr. Haynes is hands down one of the best professors I have had at UGA. You have to put in the work to get an A, as there are lots of pop quizzes on the reading, but it is doable if you do the reading and come to class. Going to class is not difficult though, since it is very interesting material and Dr. Haynes presents it in an entertaining way. She is easy to talk to and always loves to talk to students one on one. She always responded to emails quickly and was very understanding to any concerns I had about material. If you have the opportunity to take this class DO IT!!
Cons: You have to do the reading before class otherwise you could fail a pop quiz - but being forced to stay on top of material is beneficial when test time comes around and you don't have to cram! It's better to be forced to do reading each week rather than trying to read it all the day before the test.
If you are a journalism or POLS major, take this class! Highly recommended.

Pros: Online

Watch powerpoint lectures at your own pace

Doable group project given all semester to do that definitely does not take all semester

Study guides and practice quizzes prepare you for the tests & essays!

She's a fair grader!
Cons: The class moves quickly (summer session)
This comment is for POLS 1101E, so the online class. I took it this summer and it was definitely doable! It is set up very efficiently where you read a chapter, complete a study guide, take a practice quiz, and then take a quiz and write a short essay. There is also one project due at the end that is very doable in your group. I loved this class and Dr. Haynes answers emails so quickly and is so helpful!

Pros: One of the easiest classes I've taken so far!

Haynes is funny, knowledgeable, and really likable professor. Professors don't get much better than her!

Gives out extra credit occasionally.
Cons: Some of the test questions can be a little unfair but if a lot of people have trouble with it they usually won't count.
I breezed through this course by just attending class and studying for a few hours before the exams. I'm pretty interested in Political Science so I found the class really easy but some of my classmates had some trouble on the tests. It also helps to have a good TA!

Pros: Dr. Haynes is a hilarious person and she always makes lectures fun.

She drops hints on test questions if you attend class, because a lot of people skip.

She makes the material pretty easy to understand, and is a very friendly and flexible person if you need help with something.

Shes awesome.
Dr. Haynes is pretty much the best. End of story. Take this class. Do it. The breakout session assignments are easy, and the tests aren't bad. Do the study guides she gives you and you'll make an A.

Cons: Had to write a research paper, but we were given lots of feedback.
Learned a lot and never fell asleep. Very topical, too. She often would use current examples in class discussion and lecture.

Pros: Can get a good grade

Attendance not mandatory

Cares more about her students than any other teacher

Cons: Lot of Homework

Haynes is a good teacher. Sometimes it bothers me to say that because she wants her students to try really hard and I want to coast through school. But I do have to admit she's one of the best professors at this school.

She really just cares a whole lot about her students and loves to get to know them personally if you reach out to her, even in a huge lecture class. And she will make every resource available to you that will help you to do well in the class.

Also, the online quizzes weren't that bad, and the tests seemed hard at first, but once I started to study, I was able to do much better. Plus, you can't pick your TA but Jeff Auerbach is the man. That dude is going places!

Pros: Covered material in an interesting in an organized and efficient way. Made it interesting. Used the book but also included a lot of lecture material that is not in the book; discussions when class was interested; good documentaries that were pretty new and interesting. Very helpful to students when they had problems.
Cons: a lot of pop quizzes; she grades participation, too, but it only counted a little.
I enjoyed the class and thought I learned a lot. You have to know what things are but she asked a lot of essay questions that asked you to apply what you knew. I thought she was very fair and open to students.

Pros: Professor Haynes is excellent. Although the material itself is really boring, she is very enthusiastic and makes class bearable. Not to mention she has a great sense of humor and cracks jokes frequently. She doesn't take attendance, but extra credit is given out before every test if you come to class.
Cons: Material is pretty dry and power points are long.
Weekly assignments due in your break out, but they are graded very easily and help boost your grade. Extra credit given out. She gives bonus questions on her exams and adds freebies often. Overall excellent instructor and easy class!

Pros: Subject matter is very interesting: propaganda. Good text and we only had to buy one. But we used it a lot. We had a propaganda analysis project that was interesting and fun even though it was a group project. Good lectures.
Cons: Tests were killer. You really had to know the material. But Dr. Haynes lets you earn some points back with test correcttions that show that you know the concept correctly.
Very interesting and hands on class. I can use what I learned in it.
