CRSS 3100 - CAREER PROFESSION
Pros: Dr. Karnok is a great guy. He is really passionate about professionalism in the workplace and it shows when he lectures. He has a lot of guest speakers come in as well. You only meet once a week and this is a great course for those who do not know much about resumes and other things of the business sort. Tests are easy: T/F straight from the powerpoint slides. This is a great GPA booster and counts as an upper-level elective. There are no prerequisites!
Cons: Dr. Karnok tends to ramble. Sometimes it would take 3 class periods to get through a 15 slide powerpoint. The course is fairly new and isn't quite formatted the way it should be yet. After a few more tries, I'm sure it will be more organized and student can really take away some valuable information.

Pros:

- online textbook

- easy class

- learn a lot about jobs and the "real" world

- 2 quizzes 50% each

- easy easy quizzes, mostly T/F, MC

- easy assignments
Cons:

- very disorganized

- blabbers on in class going on tangents

- attendance mandatory

- spams e-mail frequently saying the same exact thing

- assignments can get annoying
Karnok is funny at first, but gets annoying as the semester stretches on. Thank God we only meet once a week. Very very annoying. Spams e-mail about e-mail not working... Assignments can get annoying. Learn a lot about professionalism and the real world.

Pros: - easy A

- knows his material (more or less)
Cons: - forces you to buy the textbook he wrote. There's really no way out. Details below.

- wastes so much class time, I was getting personally offended as a student. And I'm not even a good student.

- chit chats with his students (not in a whisper) during quizzes

The textbook selected for this class was clear extortion by the professor and the manner in which the professor conducted the class personally offended me as a student.

The textbook was written by the professor. This by itself is not necessarily inappropriate. However, in this particular case, it was very inappropriate. The ‘textbook’ was little more than the powerpoint slides reformatted as a book. There was very little additional material included in the book that was not presented during lecture (in fact, the book cannot be longer than thirty pages all together). If this were a difficult subject matter and the professor needed his students to supplement his lecture with their independent study at home, then I can understand the need for a textbook, even one written by the professor himself. However, this was a one-hour credit course, which met for just one hour per week. If he needed more time, he could have had it. What’s more, the professor wasted an amount of time each class period (which was sufficient to discourage me from attending class at all) on idle chitchat and tangential anecdotes (even while we were trying to take tests or when we had guest speakers, which was quite distracting and only goes to prove that he loves the sound of his own voice), clearly demonstrating that the entire curriculum could have been covered within the constraints of his allotted lecture period, without supplemental study at home. Therefore, the textbook was only manufactured for the purpose of generating sales for the professor.

Furthermore, the textbook was written in such a manner that it is clear the professor intended it to be sold to his own students alone. Such sentences as “Do not submit this [assignment]” (Lesson 3) or “Submit this assignment” (Lesson 10) indicate that the professor does not intend for any other campus to use this textbook – it was written with the specific audience of his own class in mind.

As a standard college student, I have saved money over the past few semesters by borrowing, renting, or (admittedly) illegally acquiring textbooks, or at least by having the option to resell the textbooks after finishing the course. None of these options was available to me for this course. The professor chose to make the textbook online so that we could not purchase it by any other means than the official website. The professor further required his students’ purchasing his textbook by mandating that all assignments be submitted via the textbook website. I feel that when the university already offers a free, highly-functional website (eLC-New), the choice of this professor to demand his assignments to be submitted via a paid website is an inconsiderate way to conduct his class, and that it is a highly inappropriate way to conduct his class when he receives a portion of the revenue from these website memberships. Finally, given that his textbook is so short and little more than a reformatting of his lecture slides, it is entirely possible and reasonable that he just provide those slides on eLC-New (as most other professors do), rather than on a paid website.

So, in summary: the professor wrote a comically short textbook with the sole intention of selling it to his own students and ensured that his students would have to purchase it, when free alternatives were available. As a side note, we had a guest lecturer nearly every week, so I am not even sure what this professor’s purpose was in this course besides the sale of this textbook. I understand that it is this professor’s own prerogative how he conducts his class, but in this case, I feel it is also to his own profit how he conducts his class.

Pros: 3 true/false quizzes, drops 1 of them.
Cons: Required to purchase about a $50 text book.
Super easy class, meets once a week. DEF the easiest one credit at UGA. The guy is a magician and does different tricks in class. He is super funny--has a great sense of humor, but some people might not like his humor. Super helpful course--definitely something everybody should take once before they graduate. The professor makes this class.
