CHEM 1312H
ADV FRESHM CHEM II
5*****
Pros: "homework" is just problems in the book that don't get graded. He listens when students have an idea of how to modify the class. We were able to have him extend due dates of labs for instance.
Cons: It is sometimes difficult to take notes because he doesn't write much down.
Take his class! Extremely kind teacher who is literally excited about teaching chemistry.

CHEM 1312H

Pros: Dr. Kutal is willing and available to help out students who ask. He's the kindest man and gives TONS of extra credit/bonus on all of the tests and the final. His class will make you study, especially if you aren't as science-minded as everyone else, but you'll leave the class understanding Chemistry much better than the regular section. He also gives practice tests and holds review sessions before each test and gives practice questions for chapters and assigned reading after every lecture. Follow the plan he gives you; it'll help tremendously.
Cons: His tests are hard. Don't just take the practice test and expect to do well, because the exams always cover different material.

The homework follows the book, but it's not too bad if you just keep your book open next to you.

His math examples in class are usually easier than the ones he gives on the test, so just go ask him about it in office hours and he'll likely give you one that is harder.

His labs are really, really hard. Don't wait until the night before to do the assigned reports, because they sometimes take over six hours. They're approximately 6-10 pages worth of data and analysis, so it's much more difficult than you might think.
I took 1311H my fall semester and made a C. I spent most of the spring semester thinking I was going to fail Kutal's class since he has so few grades to give out, but I ended up with a B. If you're like me and aren't as inclined towards understanding science, read the book. Read it religiously, read it a week in advance, study between 2 and 3 hours a day. It's possible to do well in this class, especially if you know how. Go to Kutal's office hours after doing the assigned practice problems and have Kutal go over any concepts that you still don't understand how to apply. Also, the free tutors the university provides at the ARC can and will help you, just don't totally rely on them. You have to put in a ton of effort to get a decent grade in this class, but honestly, it's worth it in the end.

Pros: The best chem teacher there is out there. Very fair on tests and great at his job. Makes you really understand the material!
Cons: His final... is ridiculous... study hard.... but he gives bonuses on all of his other tests which are very difficult but if you do well enough on the tests then the final should not affect your grade too horribly.

CHEM 1312H
ADV FRESHM CHEM II
5*****
Pros: Dr. Kutal is a great professor. He knows what he is teaching and his lectures are always lively (pretty sure he enjoyed teaching much more than I enjoyed going to class). Dr. Kutal makes sure that people are understanding the material and is always asking the class if everyone understands the material.

The homework he gives is online and can be a little bit annoying, but the problems all follow the book. He also assigns some "practice problems" from the book that he doesn't collect, but they are useful in trying to understand the concepts.

His exams are hard, but he provides a lot of extra credit points for each exam (up to about 8% per exam) and it is possible to get over 100%. He also doesn't grade for the +/- system except for rare occasions.

Attendance is not mandatory and you can do well just reading the book, but I would suggest going to class because he does practice problems which are very similar to the ones that may appear on the exams.

The labs were actually really fun compared to Chem I labs since Dr. Kutal makes his own. The labs also tie in really well with the class lectures which was really helpful in understanding the concepts we learned.
Cons: His tests can be hard but definitely doable. Just make sure that you aren't memorizing as much as understanding how things work and why because later units build on previous material. Study groups are always helpful, and Dr. Kutal also has review sessions before exams where he goes over previous exams and answers any questions you may have.

His final was harder than his normal exams, so be aware of that. However, you do get extra points on the final as well. Just try not to wait the last minute to study for the exams.

Each lab has a lab write-up that can be extremely time consuming and tedious so try not to procrastinate till the night before. It's partner work so I suggest breaking the sections up and working small portions day by day so it's not overwhelming.
Dr. Kutal is really great. If you have to take Chem II, take it with Dr. Kutal!

Pros: Dr. Kutal is an incredibly sweet man, and he tries to keep chemistry interesting. He is always willing to answer questions. He is also very good at explaining concepts. Unlike in the non-advanced chemistry classes, Kutal wrote his own labs for the class so they matched perfectly to the material we were learning at the time. I found the tests to be incredibly hard, but he does have a bonus question at the end of every test to gain a good amount of bonus points. He also lets you drop one of the 4 test grades.
Cons: The tests are incredibly hard in my opinion. They have about 7-10 multiple choice questions and 5-7 short answer questions. There is also a lab report due every week there is a lab. He gives you about 3 days to write the formal lab report.
The first semester of my freshman year I was not in the honors program so I took CHEM1211, and finished it with an A. When I was accepted into the honors program for second semester, I took this class and was not at all prepared for it. I made a C. Despite Kutal being a far superior teacher than non-honors teachers, the class was so much harder it didn't make that much of a difference for me.

CHEM 1312H

Pros: Attendance is optional, but going is helpful. He always gives a practice test and lots of the old exams (which are helpful) are on Koofers. Very very nice and understanding. The best thing about this class is that you don't have to memorize useless facts/ elements. HE gives you everything you need to take the test and truly tests your understanding, not your memorization ability. He also gives lots of extra credit.
Cons: The lab is hard. Usually the reports, which you complete with a partner are about 10-15 pages and due the Monday after lab. The lab can be really confusing but it is so helpful in the long run, The class can be slightly boring too.
I would definitely take this class over the regular section. It may be slightly harder, but it is worth it in the end.

Pros: He really tries to keep the class engaged. His tests are not that bad..just look over the chapters and old exams. He drops the lowest test and he has a bonus question to help boost your grade. He is a really nice professor and is always willing to help. Although it it time-consuming, lab is easy as along as you follow the guidelines.
Cons: Lectures can get a little boring..but I still recommend going to class. The free response questions on the test can be a little tricky. Study for the final!
Overall, you will learn a lot and I highly recommend taking it over regular section.

Pros: Awesome teacher who cares about his students understanding the material! Offers bonus points on every test and the final that help your grade a lot, generous partial credit on the short answers of tests, great lecturer. ABSOLUTELY take this honors course over the regular 1212 section! You will understand chemistry better and make a better grade.
Cons: The lab reports are very tedious and time consuming, but at least there are only 5 or 6. Pick a good lab partner and work hard on them and you'll get an A. Attend the bonus lab! Could significantly help your grade!

Pros: So passionate about chemistry

Great way of explaining things

Relates topics to real world

So nice

Only have to turn in one lab report between two lab partners

Writes his own labs
Cons: Doesn't post any notes online

Doesn't write a whole lot down so can be hard to take notes sometimes

Lab reports are lengthy
TAKE HIM! I absolutely love Dr. Kutal. He really knows his stuff. He also makes chemistry very understandable and relates it to the real world. The homework on Mastering Chemistry is so easy. He never gives quizzes. There are four tests and a final. They are difficult but fair. If you pay attention to the practice problems he works in class and the little hints he drops about what will be on the tests, read the chapters, and do the chapter practice problems he recommends, you'll do great. He writes his own labs so they're actually interesting! The lab reports take a lot of work but they're worth it, and they actually relate to what is on the tests. The only thing that made them really difficult was having lab on Tuesdays and then the huge lab report being due on Friday mornings. It would have been nice to have them due at the beginning of lab the next Tuesday so we could work on them over the weekend. But, he only wants one lab report between two lab partners so you can split it up and it isn't that bad! Seriously, take him. You will learn so much and actually have fun doing it!

Pros: Attendance is not mandatory.

Tests from previous years are posted prior to an exam.

Cons: Lecture notes aren't posted.

Lab is long and tedious, but definitely doable.
I attended about 1/3 of the lectures and still made an A in the class. Honestly, I found it hard to stay awake for his lectures at 10 AM, but as long as you read the book, the tests are not too difficult. I would suggest looking over the past exams he posts on ELC as well as some that are found on Koofers. Usually 1-3 questions are repeated. Of course after 40 years of teaching, he finally decides to start assigning homework the year I have him. But Mastering Chemistry can really boost your grade, and it helps you learn the material better especially if you rarely attend lecture. Overall Kutal is great, bless his soul. Really glad I chose this over regular chemistry 1212, which many of my friends complained about.

CHEM 1412

Pros: SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT, there are extra credit points on everything (homework, tests, even the final); practice tests that are similar to how the test is going to be; doesn't put stuff on the tests he doesn't talk about in lecture; puts the answers to the tests online like right after the test so you can get an idea of how you did

Cons: the lab that goes with this class is different from the lab that goes with 1212, and its HARD, there are lab reports that require a ton of work; homework follows the book which he doesn't follow in lecture so its a lot of self teaching for homework
he doesn't use powerpoints, but lecture is still easy to follow; he doesn't take attendance but going to class is necessary; study old tests and notes and its an easy class (especially if you took AP chem in high school)

Pros: Dr. Kutal is great! I learned so much in class and when I kept up with readings in the book, I barely had to study before the tests because I was just so prepared already. Don't take that as meaning the tests are easy... but if you keep up in class and genuinely understand it, you'll do fine! Lots of bonus points also.
Cons: Nothing really... the final was CRAZY though. Luckily I did well on all the other exams so I didn't need a high grade on the final to keep an A. So do well on the exams because the final is definitely going to bring your grade down. DON'T count on it to bump a 87 up.
Coming from Dr. Robinson to Dr. Kutal is a huge upgrade. It's just so much easier.

Pros: Pretty good at explaining things.

Bonus question on every exam for extra points.

Tests are on lab days, so there aren't as many labs.

Study sessions Sunday afternoons before each test.

No attendance policy.

No J-Exam.
Cons: Doesn't answer questions very well.

Tests are 10 multiple choice questions (40% of grade) and short answer (60%). Very hard.

Lectures are boring. He's old.
Tough class. Lots of studying and practice required to do well. Final exam is not standard like other Chem finals at UGA and is very hard. Very possible to do well if willing to work though.

Pros: - Get to drop one test grade

- Tests aren't very hard compared to other chemistry exams taken in the past

- Real world examples

- Very conceptual topics

- Explains material in a very clear way
Cons: - Homework doesn't reflect what is taught in class nor what will be on the test

- Doesn't do a ton of math examples in class, and those he does are much easier than what will be on the test
The lab relates well to the class, but the lab reports are killer, and the TAs were awful.

The best part about this lab is that the experiments go along with what you learn in lecture. The experiments are actually pretty interesting and I got the chance to do more than the usual acid and base equilibrium lab that is seems like everyone does every semester. For instance, the very first lab we got to make nylon rope which is pretty cool. The lab write-ups aren't bad as long as you put a little effort into them and the TAs seem to grade fair enough.
