All in all, Dr. Magnani was a nice guy and a solid teacher. The course is weighted so that the tests don't account for too much of the grade - 40% I believe - and the other sections of the course are simple enough to get a 100% in (quizzes/group disc...

He gives pop quizzes over the book material he asks you to read (about 10 quizzes and take best 8). I made the mistake for the first test of not reading the book and concentrating only on lecture, I made a B but could have done much better if i had taken the time to read over who discovered what and when. Study and go to class and you'll do fine, overall the class is fairly easy.

Pros: Nice, funny teacher

He gives you everything you need to do well

Will help you out if you go see him

Observatory opportunities

Notes posted
Cons: Kind of boring class

LOTS of physics

Material was not what I was expecting
Magnani is a cool, approachable guy. The material was a little difficult (the test averages were in the high 70s), however I studied a good amount and did well.

You have a note taking group, and each week you group must turn in a set a notes. The best of the ones turned in will be posted. Helps out a lot

Pros: He's hilarious. For sure one of my favorites. He knows that 99% of the kids in the class are there because it's required so he doesn't make the class any harder than it has to be.
I personally love astronomy so I really enjoyed this class. He does random quizes that are super easy and are even easier if you do the reading he assigns. Tests are straight forward, just do the problems he assigns and read over your notes. The only thing I didn't really like is the group notes which are just annoying but manageable. With our group we just took turns turning in notes each week. Just avoid the lab if you can.

Take his class!

Pros: Dr. Magnani is a fantastic professor. He's humorous and his lectures are never boring. He keeps the class lively. He gives out occasional quizzes but only for attendance purposes. Even his tests are not difficult. If you study, this is an easy A.

Very nice and funny! He makes the material simple. Exams are mostly over his lecture notes and homework problems. If you do the homework and come to class, you will do well!

Tests were a bit pedantic
All in all, Dr. Magnani was a nice guy and a solid teacher. The course is weighted so that the tests don't account for too much of the grade - 40% I believe - and the other sections of the course are simple enough to get a 100% in (quizzes/group discussion). His website is very helpful in studying for tests and the final (which was comprised about 3/4 of old test questions). The only thing that I didn't like was that his lectures were a bit dull, and at first, they all circled back to the same topic (he covered the exact same area of General Relativity for about the first two weeks of class, re-writing the same notes on the board each time). Also, some of the test questions were a bit pedantic, and some of them didn't cover important areas of the notes or the text. If you have interest in Astronomy, I would recommend this course.

Dr. Magnani is a great professor. He makes the subject easy to understand and really wants all the students to do well. He makes jokes a lot and is very kind-hearted. He usually gives one pop quiz a week as his way of making sure students come to class, but the questions are very easy and you get some credit just for showing up. I would recommend doing the chapter homework, even though it's not required, since most of the questions are formatted just like the homework. Also, go to the review session before the exam, he pretty much tells you exactly what will be on the exam. Exams are usually multiple choice with 2 free response math questions.

Dr. Magnani is great. He really knows the material and is my favorite professor so far in the Astronomy department. He often has personal stories to keep class interested, and he seems to care about making sure students have bright futures.

FYOS 1001
First-Year Odyssey Seminar
5*****
Pros: He spends most of the class talking about the reading you were supposed to do. He never singles people out to answer questions because the material is so advanced. He is very interesting and genuinely seems to enjoy what he does.
Cons: Some of the material was way over my head and I was rather confused about some of it.
Magnani is a great professor. I changed my major to Astronomy because of this FYO class. I suggest trying to take him at some point before graduating. He is a funny guy and he makes lectures very interesting. We had to write 2 papers which he would edit for us ahead of time if you turn them in to him. Overall very easy, informative, interesting class.

ASTR 1110L
Introduction to Astronomy Laboratory (Honors)
5*****
Pros: Dr. Magnani is a fantastic professor who does not mind helping his students to better understand the course material. In fact, he encouraged my classmates and me to stop by his office if we ever had questions. I may have been the only one to take him up on this offer, but his help was invaluable, especially as I struggled through ASTR1110H. There weren't many assignments, but I don't think that's the "norm" (see why in cons).
Cons: Broken telescopes and inclement weather often resulted in class cancellation.

ASTR 4330
Astronomy Seminar
5*****
Pros: Dr. Magnani makes this class easy

You would have to try very hard to fail
Cons: None
When Dr. Magnani teaches this course, it is a lot less focused on the work, and more focused on understanding your future as a potential astronomer or graduate student. He has several stories and gives excellent advice while still being incredibly entertaining and effective.

He assigned two one page essays throughout the course on topics that he would randomly pick. They were easy, and you will get an A as long as you try.

Pros: Super cool guy, definitely knows what he is talking about. He is down to Earth and understanding and often times a pushover. Attendance not mandatory but it definitely makes the class easier. Its an easy A if you study a little bit.
Cons: Sometimes he goes off on tangents that may or may not be essential to the class. He moves quickly sometimes. Reading is not necessary but suggested.

Pros: Magnani is a very easygoing guy who really enjoys what he does. He doesn't take attendance and makes the lab really fun and personal. I learned a lot about the stars and night sky. Magnani is a very intelligent man who is good at explaining complicated things to students.
Cons: The telescope was broken so we did not get to use it.
Magnani is one of my favorite astronomy professors. I would recommend him to anyone.

Pros: Loves what he does and wants you to like it as well. He is quite funny and cares about his students. The exams are straight forward and a good mix between the book and notes... The book is required... you want the book. Homework is given, but never graded.

Cons: Physics based. If you aren't good at basic Calculus and have a good grasp on Physics you will after this class!

Pros: When he actually teaches the class, it is really interesting, and he knows how to explain the information.
Cons: He only teaches a max of three of the classes. You work with 2-3 other TAs.
Going outside depends on the weather; my class spent most nights inside. Also, you don't really learn much; it's just a crash course.
