ENGL 1102
English Composition II
5*****
Pros: you dont have to read any books, only short stories that are actually very interesting. i learned a lot about the world in this class, along with improving my writing skills. lots of youtube videos and movies in order to help produce essay ideas. i got Bs on all my papers and worked really hard and did everything he suggested me to do on the portfolio and got an A in the class, so dont be discouraged if you dont get As on the papers throughout the semester. An A is definitely doable.
Cons: the portfolio was challenging, but you have to do it in either class.
His class is completely computer based. dont bother getting any of the textbooks or even bringing a notebook to class, you dont need anything. he wants your essays to be creative so write about something you are passionate about or something out of the ordinary and you will get a decent grade. doesnt give many As on the first round of papers, but gives you the opportunity to earn a better grade on your portfolio that will replace the first grade you received. he doesnt assign essay topics. definitely get him if you can, he is young, loves what he does, and wants you to succeed!

Pros: Very interesting class discussions.

Easy grader.
Cons: Sometimes slow at getting back grades.
Really nice and entertaining. I turned in everything late, even the porfolio, and still got a B.

Pros: One of the best professors you will take in college.

Cool guy, young too so he knows our generation very well.

Hilarious

Thinks out of the box and makes you think like never before.

Portfolio was on a wordpress site.
Cons: Sometimes Simrill was so cool and lenient that I would wait to the last minute on stuff, which caused my grade to suffer.

There is some work...... 30 journals due at the end of the semester (1page)

2-3 essays
One of the best professors you will take, I had his class at 5:00 pm and was always excited to go. Great teacher!

Pros: Lots of satisfaction when you complete your documentary. The professors give you a lot of help.
Cons: Since you have to make a documentary, it takes a good amount of work to do it right, but it is graded pass/fail so you don't have to worry about that.
Great class with a great project. It's pass fail and taught by 3 professors. TAKE THIS CLASS YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

Pros: Great teacher!
THE PORTFOLIO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'LL DO. Make sure your portfolio is great. Be creative, use a fun/exciting template. Don't do the regular emma entry. The portfolio pretty much determines your grade in the class. Don't be discouraged by a bad grade on a paper; just improve it in your portfolio.

Pros: -Very intelligent

-He's young so he relates well with all of the students

-Make the class interesting

-Don't have to use textbooks
Cons: -Can be extremely vague at times

-The portfolio takes a lot of time and effort to finish

-Very slow grader
Overall I enjoyed Simrill's class. He's a little eccentric, but overall a nice guy and pretty funny. There's not too much outside reading and if you do have to read something it's never anything longer than a short story or an article. His class is very computer heavy so make sure that you bring a computer with you every class. The only things that I don't really like about him is that he's very vague with what he expects out of your essays and that he's a very slow grader. In fact, he never actually graded my last essay.

Pros: You do absolutely nothing in class. You honestly never have to go. You watch youtube videos and listen to hime talk. He is awesome and tells you great things
Cons: You don't do anything in class so when the portfolio comes around you will have a lot of work to do in a short time. Compared to the easiness of the class he is a hard grader. I always got A on papers in high school and my best paper in his class was an 85. You can write about anything it is very open. If you are a good writer you will be fine but if you are not creative he will not like your essays.
You need to be very creative to make an a in this class. A B is very easy to get though

Pros: He lets you choose the paper of your topic, as long as it is within the confines of the overlying topic. NO BOOKS, just Youtube videos, movies, and graphic novels. Saved me $110!
Cons: He will tear up your papers until you fix them and it "blows [his] mind."
Basically the most rad professor I've ever had. He's very intelligent, but very chill. He gave me B's on all three of my papers, but because I worked hard on the portfolio and took all of his suggestions, I got an A in the course. Don't panic if you get B's or C's on your papers the first time. If you do what he wants you to do, you'll get a good grade. Take his class! I loved it.

Pros: Really interesting guy, you'll love the class!
Cons: His grading can be hard. If you are used to outlined paper and specific topics, find another teacher.
Simrill's class is great! I have him for 1102, and he is just amazing. He makes you look and think about literature in a totally different way. It is possible to make an A in the class, but you must really do well on the papers and the portfolio. (Especially this, it'll gurantee you an A in the class.) Easy to get a B.

Pros: Very Smart Man

Makes English Enjoyable

Always Willing to Help Out

Doesn't Make Us Use the Textbooks

Cons: Doesn't Explain Things Well
Dr. Simrill was easily the best Freshman Composition Teacher, out of all that I have heard about. He is very intelligent and knows a ton about seemingly everything. He made Composition enjoyable, in fact, I had to make sure that was a Composition Class after the first day. Only negative is that he doesn't explain things well.

Pros: Hes very creative. He thinks a lot and makes you think outside of the box. Not a typical English 1102 professor. You don't need a book. You watch videos sometimes, a pretty chill class.
Cons: He grades harsh sometimes because he doesn't completely explain what he wants in the paper. But he also has a policy that if you do really well on the portfolio and show that you've worked hard, your grade in the class could easily change.

Your papers don't have to be amazing just interesting. You get a lot of points for creatvity in his class. Videos, artwork, hand drawings, etc. are all greatly appreciated. My last paper was a graphic novel, and I really enjoyed creating it. AWESOME CLASS, AWESOME TEACHER!

Pros: Easy, Fun, Interesting Class

Cons: Paper topics are somewhat hazy and you will probably find yourself not sure what you're supposed to do.
Great teacher and guy! Lenient and understanding when it comes to essays and late work. No reading quizzes, the grade is purely based off essays. He is about learning, not about lesson plans. Watched YouTube videos and documentaries in class. Always willing to help!

Pros: Professor Simrill is an extremely smart guy, and I loved his class for the most part. If you work hard you will be fine in the class. Let's you choose your own topics for essays and you watch youtube videos for most of the classes.
Cons: He can be extremely vague sometimes. Make sure that you start the journals early or you will be playing catch up for the majority of the semester.

Pros: Dr. Simrill is an interesting guy who keeps class entertaining. I enjoyed the readings and the freedom he gives his students.
Cons: If you are not great with technology than perhaps consider another professor. His class is completely reliant on technology which was difficult for me, as I am not tech. literate.
Overall, Dr. Simrill is one the best professors I have had at UGA.
