CHEM 1212 - Freshman Chemistry II
Pros: Stanton is the best chemistry professor that there is. He explains everything slowly and makes sure that you understand the material before moving on. He is always available during office hours and answers questions on test days. NO JEXAM!!!! : D
Cons: His tests require you to know more than other classes but it will help you in the long run if you plan on taking ochem. He is a stickler about sig figs. Worst of all he thinks he is a DIVA!!

CHEM 1212L - Freshman Chemistry Laboratory II
You practically never see Stanton. And when you do, make sure your goggles are on. He likes to yell and kick people out of lab.
Pros: I mean, the class is informative?
Cons: The workload for this class is intense. Every single lab has a Pre-Lab, Lab Report, and Post lab. I spent more time on Lab then I did the actual Gen Chem class. Lab proposals are a pain if you have no idea what you are doing, and the final lab practical is worth 10% of your grade - and you either get a 100 or a 0. Make sure to DO the labs and know HOW to do them. The practical determines your grade to an entire letter extent. Your TA makes or breaks your grade.

CHEM 1211L
Freshman Chemistry Laboratory I

Pros: There aren't many...
Cons: Stanton is the worst lab-coordinator ever. He won't talk to you or answer questions. He is fat and just comes in yelling and screaming in the middle of your lab session. Your grade effectively depends on your TA and he lacks the ability to pick good TA's. Good luck with this lab. Lab practical sucks so hope you get lucky and get an easy one.
Sorry that this has to be such a burden on Gen Chem.

He is good at explaining the information, but he is very very picky and rude. If you go to his office hours a lot he will give you the questions on the test, and for the final memorize the practice test b/c at least 30% comes from the practice test that is on elc.

CHEM 1211L
Freshman Chemistry Laboratory I

Pros: Nothing
Cons: Stanton must take pride in picking TA's that he knows will destroy a students lab grade. I spent many more hours studying for lab than the actual lecture, only to receive a C in lab and an A in lecture. How does that work out? The labs are nothing like the lecture. Stanton is incredibly rude and unhelpful. When I tried emailing him about a concern I had in lab, I received one-word responses, and he wouldn't even give me the opportunity to meet with him. Just another pitiful example of someone seeking power in order to feel important.

CHEM 1212L
Freshman Chemistry Laboratory II

Pros: The suicide option. Le Chatlier's Principal. Getting an A because you got the oddly humane TA and the easy practical question (happened to me, 1212L, studied for practical 1 hour). C's mean nothing, because your fate is not in your own hands.
Cons: Having the burdens of a closed mind become your own. Getting a C because you got the oddly vindictive TA and the hard practical question (happened to me, 1211L, studied for practical 12+ hours). A's mean nothing, because your fate is not in your own hands.
My fellow students, what will come to pass, does come to pass. This we all know, at least in our hearts. Hold this truth aloft as you read these words. UGA's general chemistry lab, generously called a college course, one whose design and function are dictated by a male known as Stanton, may be a crime against life on par with bullying or animal cruelty. Here I do not speak in hyperbole! For lo! Only with a supreme social ignorance and deranged impulsion do such atrocities manifest, and in the third floor halls of the chemistry building such ignorance has bred a manner of torment many will suffer with unspeakable psycho-emotional pain. It will be apparent to all who do not dwell in complacency that there seems a tainted curse upon the laboratories and teacher's assistants (TA's, who actually teach, and are rather assisted by the "teacher," as it were) of this course, one that drains them of a certain sense of humanity. It will be shocking and frightful for the especially conscious among you. You may find yourself questioning whether you have not become unwittingly trapped in a nightmare, or whether you have been hypnotized and made to succumb to odd tortures. This is your naked soul screaming for you to escape. Most will merely find their interest in chemistry threatened, and it is for this reason that I write. Know this, dear student: Chemistry is whatever you want it to be. It is the wondrous study of matter you may think it is. Hold strong, and let not the staggering schemes of Stanton destroy so curious a thing, for you may yet persevere only partially ruined. And to all who hate the man: Forgive him, for he knows not what he does. His is a tale already told many times in the wake of mass-education. Praise him for his efforts and laden him with gifts if you are able, for some part of him must strive to be good. Take joy in the fact that somewhere else on this earth exists a chemistry lab that inspires, that is roundly praised by its students. If it can exist there, it can exist here, and one day, surely it will.

CHEM 1211L
Freshman Chemistry Laboratory I

Pros: The only positive about this course is that I met some attractive girls who wanted to work together on labs. I did learn a lot about Chemistry and if this course weren't so screwed up, I might have actually enjoyed it.
Cons: Lets' start with the TA's. It is luck of the draw. Sometimes, you luck out and get a really cool TA who realizes that we are kids and don't want to spend 3 hours doing experiments. If this situation occurs, you probably will have shortened lab times because you get to use previous experiment data or work together. You might also get an easy grader. Don't count on it.

Let's talk about class structure. It is BOGUS. Why is one man in charge of thousands of students? The policies of the class (ie. no late work, stingy grading policy, etc.) do not help students at all. The practical is pass/fail. Personally, I did my experiment correctly and because of a minor reading error at the beginning of the experiment, my final answer was outside of the acceptable margin. I appealed based on my work and got rejected. This class is a big discouragement.

Lastly, let's talk about Dr. Stanton. The words "morbidly obese", "middle aged", "balding fat man" come to mind. I wonder how he crawls out of his mother's basement every morning to come here. I also wonder how he gets his pants on to dress himself. How could the University of Georgia hire such an arrogant, useless, sphincter? He riles in the hatered of students. He treats everyone as if they are ignorant. he doesn't give a crap about anyone, probably because he is composed of crap himself.

CHEM 1212
Freshman Chemistry II

Pros: He helped write the book, so obviously he knows what he is talking about. When he explains things, he explains them well. He gives practice problems before tests.
Cons: What actually appears on tests are "the practice problems on steroids." You can be able to do all the practice problems fine and still do bad on tests because he wants you to know how to do even harder problems... backwards.
This is still considered a weed-out class, so Stanton makes the class difficult. As he puts it, "You pay so much money to go to school here, of course you want a quality education. Your parents wouldn't be very happy if I didn't give you the education they paid for." Also, he is very strict with his time. Five minutes early is what he considers on time.

CHEM 1211L
Freshman Chemistry Laboratory I
2**
Pros: Sometimes reinforced the concepts being learned in Chem lecture...
Cons: By sometimes I mean like once in the course of my entire year in gen. chem. Lab is very work intensive, and your grade totally depends on your T.A. I only saw Stanton once when he came in our room to yell, and he scared the crap out of me. Plus the grades can get curved up AND down, so you never really know what your grade will be.
Lab is really hard (someimtes harder than regular class) and is really subjectiive based on the T.A. you have. Last semester I had a psychotic TA who took off points for EVERYTHING, then she got yelled at and was super easy after that. I ended up with a 99 average before the practical, while people who I worked with on the lab reports got lower grades.

And the practical is awful, really stressful and often hard, plus its pass/fail and 10% of your grade. So, good luck with that. In my opinion lab is really useless, which is horrible considering the amount of work we have to do for it.

CHEM 1211L
Freshman Chemistry Laboratory I
1*
Pros: none
Cons: - He is rude.

- Lab is NOT coordinated at all with lecture material, so you never know what you're doing in lab.

- The lab notes are SO unhelpful, and since the lab is also not coordinated with lecture, you pretty much guess answers on the lab reports.

- The final exam is a lab practical, and it's the most unfair "exam" I've ever taken. You either get a 0 or a 100. No partial credit on this final, and it's worth 10% of your grade. So if you get a 0 on the final, you drop a letter grade. It's an unfair exam because a) there's no partial credit b) everyone gets different practicals, and some are SO easy and others are SO difficult.
General chemistry lab was the worst class I've ever taken at UGA. It is utterly meaningless. Just get through it because no lab class is worse than this one.

Unfortunately, he is the only gen chem lab coordinator, i.e. you don't have a choice in lab professors.

CHEM 1110
Elementary Chemistry

Pros: Dr. Stanton knows his material very well. I'm actually proud to say that I have actually learned chemistry instead of "getting by." Although he can be sarcastic sometime, he is extremely helpful. He tells you everything you need to know on the test during class so it is imperative you go. You must do more than average. Chemistry (although it's elementary) requires doing practice problems everyday. Make sure you buy the book because his test questions are made up, and are usually similar to the practice problems in the book. Overall he is a great teacher and very intelligible
Cons: Requires a lot of work. Don't be fooled by the word "elementary." The concepts are definitely harder to grasp, but if you go to class everyday and work the problems in the back you will be good to go. Make sure you go to Stanton's office hours!

CHEM 1211

Pros: - Written tests help a lot, because you can get partial credit.

- Teaches material well and has plenty of office hours to attend for help.
Cons: - Chemistry is just a hard class, no matter who you take it with.

- Has a very intimidating personality.
If you want an A, you're going to have study incredibly hard. It's very possible, but take the workload seriously. That being said, he grades his tests out of 110, which basically gives you 10 extra points on every test. He's a good teacher, and the written tests were the biggest selling point for me. If you're going to take gen chem, he is definitely not a bad choice. I'd take him again.

Pros: Stanton is a great teacher. He teaches the material very well and slowly. He is willing to answer all questions and will slow down if you simply ask. Also GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!! He will answer all questions and give you extra pracitce problems. Also he gives hints as to what is on the test throughout the lectures so be sure to pay attention.
Cons: He can come off as rude but if you realize that he is trying to be funny you wont get offended. He does not use JEXAM which can be be bad because he writes his own tests.

Pros: Sometimes your TA will perform the whole experiment for you and will give you answers during tutoring hours.
Cons: Depending on which TA you get you may or may not receive e-mails with help for the next week's lab
Stanton is never in the lab,it's usually just his TA's. Depending on who you have you might get lucky,or in my case be stuck with someone who barely speaks english and end up spending the rest of the semester struggling to understand what he/she is saying.

Pros: Easy if you have friends to help and a T.A. that you show that you care about your grade. The T.A.'s tend to help more if you show you are invested in your grade.
Cons: The lab practical is 10% of your grade. If you pass it you go from a 'B' to an 'A-'. If you fail it then your 'B' goes to a 'C-'. Oh and it's pass or fail no middle ground. 11 labs to remember the procedures. Most are titrations and they are pretty easy since you have to do them for an experiment.

Pros: 1) Lab is not hard, you just have to show up in the correct dress code and do the labs.

2) There are some labs that are occasionally hard, but that's what networking is for. ;)
Cons: 1) Apparently the difficulty of the TA determines whether or not your grade will be scaled up or down. This is something that i've never heard of before in my life.
Lab is generally designed to be the GPA booster for science classes. Be careful of the miscontrued method of grading.

Pros: The class is not too bad itself other than the practical.
Cons: The practical is 10% of your grade and it is pass fail. You don't get to use your notes or anything. You just have to memorize/remember how to do everything. It is extreme for this to be 10% of your grade.
