CHEM 184 - Foundations of Chemistry I
Pros: He is pretty hilarious and actually explains stuff well.
Cons: His exams are pretty long and intense. Oh and we're pretty sure he's an alcoholic lol

CHEM 184 - Foundations of Chemistry I
Pros: 1 out of 4 exams during the semester can be dropped. The is plenty of help available (other then Dr. Heirl) in the form of a help desk, discussions, and TA office hours.
Cons: With over 8 years of seeing alcoholics in the army, I can positively say he is one and needs to retire. He is very condescending when you ask him a question that you don't understand, either in class or in his office. He frequently puts stuff on the exams that he never covered in class or the review. Often, during the reviews, he will come in slurring his speech a little and messes up calculations.

CHEM 188
Foundations of Chemistry II

Pros: Powerpoint notes
Cons: Comes to class and reviews drunk occasionally. Fumbles through topics, and really does little to truly teach students, more just repitition of the powerpoint slides.
I would not recommend this professor.

CHEM 184
Foundations of Chemistry I
2**
Pros: Attendance isn't necessary or graded and the HW is pretty easy.
Cons: Tests are wicked hard and worth a large portion of your grade.
There's no curving of tests, ever. Over 500 people FAILED one of the tests and he didn't do anything. Go to the lectures if you can, but there's no harm in skipping. He reads off powerpoints he gives you at the beginning of the semester and does very few, if any, example math problems in class. Which totally sucks, because his tests are almost entirely math-based problems and totally unlike the homework. Study for the tests using the problems in the back of the book and especially the old tests.

CHEM 184

Pros: You can do fairly well in the class (B range) even if you get F's on all your tests, just do the HW and keep pace in the lab
Cons: Horrible lecture teacher! Hard tests!
Bad class but required for lots of people! Go to the discussions.....

CHEM 188
Foundations of Chemistry II
1*
Pros: Doesn't take attendance. Generally not necessary to go to class.
Cons: Doesn't really teach. Doesn't really do much. You are basically going to be teaching yourself.
If you've never taken chemistry before I recommend trying to take it a semester when Hierl isn't teaching.

CHEM 184
Foundations of Chemistry I
1*
Pros: Your worst test grade will be dropped (except for the final exam), he holds a 2 hour test review 2 days before the test which are helpful to some but confusing to others
Cons: He talks too fast, also messes up a lot when demonstrating calculations. More confusing than helpful.
Not the greatest professor in my perspective. I got confused in his class too often.

Pros: Allows you to drop one test out of the four.
Cons: He know his stuff, but he just doesn't know how to relay that knowledge to students. It's alot of learning on your own.

CHEM 184
Foundations of Chemistry I
2**
Pros: The weekly homework is very easy, all of the answers can be googled so homework is an easy 100%

Lecture is not necessary to attend
Cons: If you have no chemistry background, DO NOT take chemistry with Peter Hierl.

He does not explain things very well and basically assumes his students know the material before even taking his class.
Professor Hierl is definitely not the best professor. You will basically have to teach yourself the material if you don't already know it. I took Advanced Placement Chemistry in high school so the class was a breeze for me, but I know a lot of people really truly struggle with the class and I can see why. Hierl does NOT teach you the material, he reads directly off his power point slides (which you have to purchase so you already have them, making it unnecessary to go to lecture).

CHEM 184
Foundations of Chemistry I

Reads off of power point slide so it is pointless to even go to his lecture. Have a knowledge and background of Chem before going into his class, his teaching style requires it to pass. He really isn't helpful at all and doesn't realize when the class average is a 70% or less that no one understands what he is teaching.

CHEM 184

Pros: Has a powerpoint book that is supplemental to the textbook so you can look ahead into each lecture. Review sessions before exams are great practice.
Cons: Sometimes disorganized and places questions on the tests that he never really covered.

Pros: No attendance so you don't have to go to class
Cons: You have to teach yourself everything because he can't teach and the tests are very difficult
Try to avoid taking this class when he's teaching it. Its much easier in the off semesters.

CHEM 184
Foundations of Chemistry I
1*
Pros: He really knows what he's talking about and he's super super smart. If you catch him on a good day he's really friendly and helpful, but other day's he should just be avoided.
Cons: He may know what he's doing, but he's TERRIBLE at teaching it. He just lectures off the power point knows that you have to buy, so going to class is a waste of time. The lectures are really dry unless he decides to crack a joke. His jokes are really funny, but few and far between. The homework has nothing to do with the examples given or what is explained in the lectures and takes forever to complete. The tests are super hard and unless you study for hours on end, you don't get a good grade - best suggestion is to go over lots and lots of previous tests. In my 800+ people class the class average is a D, so obviously there's something wrong but he doesn't fix it.
Get a tutor or don't spend so much money and take the class at a community college and get the same credit.

CHEM 184
Foundations of Chemistry I
1*
Pros: None
Cons: Maybe it's just the structure of the class but it feels impossible to pass this with a grade higher than a D. The homework in no way relates to the tests and the class material can just be read by yourself. The best thing you can do is read Koofer's exams and go to discussion sections. Mr. Hierl makes me question where I'm going in life and has made things very difficult

Pros: You drop your lowest test score

The homework isn't hard

The lab isn't hard
Cons: He stops explaining things halfway through

His tests are only 25 questions long so there isn't much room for error

His test questions are way harder than any of the homework you are assigned
I'm pretty sure he's an alcoholic and he has little respect for his students
