Pros: He's quite nice.

Cons: He's quite disorganized.

He's quite nice.

I went to see him for burning questions from group study when it wasn't his office hours.

He said he was busy, but took my questions.

He even encourages questions during the lecture.

My friend who sat next to me asked questions nearly every time he paused after teaching/writing something, but never got impatient.

The downside is that he's quite disorganized.

His 3 + 1 final exam are the only measures to grade.

That being said, i thought i was gonna fail Orgo 1 for the second time, but he gave me a passing grade, when i might not have deserved it.

Take him instead of Dr.Dixon.

CHEM 241
Organic Chemistry II
5*****
Pros: If you go to class, he will hint very heavily as to what will be on the exam. Also, his exams are very straightforward; check out the old exams either on Koofers or with the chem society on campus -- they don't change much. He really does want you to do well. He's very nice and the lectures are entertaining. I actually learned organic chemistry this year, and have found that I actually like it (which I never thought I would say after Orgo I). I highly recommend Dr. Khachik. It's not an "easy A" but it is definitely a "doable A."
Cons: N/A
The reason I clicked "frequently" on extra credit is b/c you have to write your section number on your exam, and for doing so correctly you earn 5 points towards your exam grade. I used the textbook as a supplement (especially for conceptual type things; i.e. what determines the basicity of an amine?). Generally, I would suggest taking really good notes during lecture and using those to study from primarily, and then supplement with the book for conceptual ideas and to do homework problems.

CHEM 231
Organic Chemistry I
5*****
Pros: Exams cover exactly the material he says it will. He gives hints in lecture such as "Know this reaction...it will show up later." He doesn't test mechanisms--ever! He only needs to know the products. The synthesis questions are all based on what you can already do--so just memorize your reactions on flashcards and you can do almost any synthesis question. If you know the material and put in time to memorize reactions, you can definitely get an A in this course.

Another pro: he is very generous with his curve.
Cons: Doesn't like to answer questions in class and acts condescending with his answers.

CHEM 231
Organic Chemistry I

Pros: he is straight forward and approachable

Cons: he only gives 3 tests and a final so everything counts a lot towards your grade
do the practice problems he assigns and look for old exams because he recycles exam questions frequently

Cons: Difficult to understand. Tends to be scatterbrained.
Orgo sucks, but he's alright.

CHEM 232
ORGANIC CHEM LAB I
4****
Pros: Huge curve
Cons: Lab is too much damn work for 1 measly credit
I hate lab, mostly because the order in which information is learned is completely uncorrelated to the order in which things are learned in class, and the lab textbook does a really shitty job of explaining concepts, but the professors can’t really do anything about that. Memorize the review guide the professor sends out before the midterm and the final, because they’re hard and the average is usually pretty low. Khachik gave out an incredible curve at the end of the semester, but don’t count on that. I screwed up both my midterm and final but did well on my labs so I still managed to get an A.

CHEM 232S
ORGANIC CHEM LAB I
3***
I did well on most of the labs, averaging an A on almost all of them. However, I bombed both the midterm and the final. There was a 26% Curve at the end of the class, so I went from a 76% to an A-. Definitely a hard class and a lot of effort for 1 credit, but it is curved nicely and if you do well on the labs it'll pay off.
