There is nothing wrong with the professor himself. The problem are the tests. The tests are only 18 multiple choice and 2 short answers. It is difficult to study 5 chapters of information (A LOT of information) to then answer 18 questions. The questions are multiple-multiple choice which means they can have 1 to 5 right answers. This leaves alot of room for only partial credit. I'd rather take a quiz with 60 questions knowing there was only one sure answer. My TA was also an idiot.

Nelson is a really nice man, and was very helpful when I had conflicts taking exams on the scheduled dates. He's very funny in lecture, even though you really do not have to go to lecture since he posts all his slides online. I still went, and found it beneficial to at least hear him discuss the topics. His tests aren't easy, and I ended up studying really hard for this class in order to do well, but there is a curve built into the grade, so you can lose up to about 120 points all together by the end of the class and still have an A. He doesn't curve individual tests, but you have to remember that, given this system, an A on a test is something like an 85 and above. All in all, its a tough class no matter who you take it with, and you are going to have to end up reading the textbook chapters anyway, but I had a good experience in Nelson's class and would recommend him.

Pros: Powerpoints online. Lab boosts grade if you attend and do your work (copy your lab partners). The first exam is posted on koofers and is almost identical to his first exam (I think he knows but wants everyone to start off well). He's very helpful when one on one. GSS sessions help ALOT especially if you have a good leader such as Meaghan (she da bomb). If you have an A going into the final, you're exempt from it.
Cons: A bit boring to listen to. One pop quiz given out which was after spring break when everyone realizes they can skip his lecture lol. Also, bonus answer given out to whoever showed the day before spring break (13 people).
I haven't taken bio since 10th grade and currently have an 80%. Class is passable. I would study by not going to lecture, but going through the powerpoints and taking notes on them then going over notes and highlighting them and also looking over youtube videos on the topics. If you can stay awake in class, might as well go to get some extra help. You don't need a textbook because his tests are straight from powerpoint and powerpoint is literally straight from the textbook but without the useless stuff.

Pros: Hes a pretty easy teacher with the potential of lots of extra credit
Cons: He gets kind of boring since he lectures from his slides that he ends up putting online anyways
He offers lots of extra credit through mastering biology which is a very nice thing. He is an overall easy teacher as long as you look over the slides and do the mastering biology. You can work your way to an A.

Pros: geuinely cares about his students

very helpful when you attend office hours

you can loose almost 300 points and still pass the course
Cons: test can be tricky with multiple/multiple choice set-up

Lecture can be boring because hes just reading off the slides.

a lot of studying outside of class is required.

I talk to my lab TA a lot for this class, so I don't have a lot to say for this teacher in particular. His tests are really straight forward, though. His tests are based on his lectures, but you need to read the book to make sure his lectures make sense.

Dr. Nelson mainly reads from the lecture slides, so his class is not that interesting, but his tests are fair and he is interesting to talk to after class

Pros: This has probably been my most enjoyable class at UMD.

Very organized, humorous, and good-natured man

If you go to his review sessions, he won't read the test verbatim, but he will definitely give hints and helpful advice, in addition to what he says to everyone who faithfully attends lectures.
Cons: If you miss the day of the pop-quiz, then you lose 0.5%...but by not going to lecture, you will probably have much more difficulty gaining sympathy of any sort, especially since it's a very manageable time to make.
Dr. Nelson is a patient and understanding educator, who can be very grandfatherly at times. He teaches a very technical intro course, but he will present the information in such a way that it is digestible. He does factor extra credit into the syllabus, so getting an A is very doable. I would personally recommend studying harder for the second and third exams, since they involve the most detailed and mechanistic content.

Pros: puts slides online

If you go to him after lecture in his office, he explains the material very well.

Cons: He doesn't do multiple choice, but he does multiple answer, which makes it difficult to get more correct. You have to circle every correct answer or the whole thing is wrong.
DO NOT MISS LAB, unless you have a doctors note. If you attend all labs and do well on the assignments, it will really help.

Also, do masteringbio all the time, constantly check it. If you do well on all of them, that's a potential extra 100 points towards your final grade which will really help.

Pros: Good guy and will work with you.

Don't really need to go to lecture
Cons: Multiple Multiple Choice Exams are hard and make you walk out thinking you failed.
Study all the lecture slides are you will be more or less fine for the exams. The nature of the class demands a lot of studying and going over a lot of lecture slides. The lab and masteringbio basically functions as a grade booster

Cute old man! Adds a 40 point buffer to your grade. Exams are difficult because they are multiple multiple choice so you have to know a lot about the subject. The final was actually a lot easier than the 4 exams during the semester, thankfully.
