Organic Chemistry I: Biological Emphasis

Overall good teacher, requires 5 Co-op assignments, provides a action center 3 times a week, but TA's tend to tell you different answers and sometimes cannot answer your questions. When you ask a question they sometimes just tell you to read the book, which I can do at home and if I understood the book probably wouldn't have asked them the question in the first place.

Very difficult class, takes at least 2 hours a day studying to get a decent grade! Tons of memorization, quiz almost every Monday, test every three weeks and the final is cumulative. There are group assignments due the Friday before the test that usually will end up saving your grade, if you have a good group. Be prepared to work very hard!

CHEM 3152
Organic Chemistry Laboratory: Biological Emphasis
5*****
You use a packet for the ochem lab and a carbon copied booklet to write down your reports. The labs overall were interesting but a few labs took up the whole time you are there. The TA helps you out if you don't understand something and personally I liked Guarav. The guy was funny with his jokes, knew a lot of information and helps you with calculation or some IR analysis. Most of the stuff he wrote on the board were like clues or hints of what might be on the quizzes, which were during the first 6mins of lecture. Quizzes were like a love-hate relationship, lab reports were not hard to write up ( I recommend taking this with chem 3153 as this will help you understand ochem better in my opinion). Midterm was not bad, just look over past exams to get an idea and remember your past labs.

CHEM 3053
Organic Chemistry I: Biological Emphasis

Pros: He always keeps you up to date on assignments, quizzes, homework, and any news with emails and announcements in class. There is usually random extra credit on days where not that many students show up to class- this semester, he has given us extra credit on 2 different occasions when the classroom was basically empty. So GO TO CLASS!
Cons: There aren't that many grades in his classes, so you basically have to do well on everything to get an A. And if you earn a 79.4 based on your total points, then you get a C. No questions asked.

CHEM 3153
Organic Chemistry II: Biological Emphasis

Morvant's class was extremely difficult and took hours of preparation and studying. We didn't have the co-op assignments that Fall '09 students have, but the lectures were concise and the content of the quizzes were exactly the same as the lecture. If you paid attention in lecture, reviewed the podcasts online, and took the time to memorize the reactions and mechanisms, the tests weren't that bad. I just barely made an A.

Pros: he knows his stuff. If you have a question or don't follow a difficult concept, he'll make it quite clear.
Cons: He is cynical about college students and HATES pre-med kids. Make sure to know all the ins and outs of his notes because he'll often try and trick you with slightly different reactions or mechanisms on his tests. STUDY LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT.
Hard teacher. I bombed the first two tests, but did well on the 3rd and 4th to bring my grade to a B. He gives a "survey bonus" that adds ~11 points to your grade (the equivalent of two tests questions)

CHEM 3053
Organic Chemistry I: Biological Emphasis
3***
Pros: Very intelligent organic chemist, lecture podcasts available on iTunes are incredibly helpful so going to class is not necessary if you learn better on your own time
Cons: His tests are difficult and he is a hard grader. Not much leniency in any area of his courses.
If you are trying to make an A in one of his courses, expect to study upwards of a couple hours a day, as the material is very demanding and he is a very difficult professor

Pros: Morvant definitely knows what he's talking about, and he can answer questions on a wide range of topics. He holds lots of office hours and is available.
Cons: The lectures can be hard to follow if you're not a visual learner. There are no words, outlines, or bullet points to be found. Morvant starts with a blank slide, and just starts drawing reactions and talking as he goes.

CHEM 3153
Organic Chemistry II: Biological Emphasis
2**
Pros: he is a very good teacher and can explain o-chem in a way you can understand it
Cons: tests are damn near impossible. multiple choice a-j is cruel to me as a format for o-chem testing.
He's not very nice in person, very sarcastic.
