Really awesome teacher. His main philosophy was that he doesn't want students to stress about exams, therefore, if you understand the material and study a decent amount you can usually get an A on his exams. He gives practice tests that are very similar to the real test, sometimes with identical questions. The homework was pretty short and about once every 2 weeks. He randomly collects one of the problems. He often gave advice about the professional world and even offered some research positions for people who submitted resumes.

Pros: Wants you to learn, tells you to leave with an A on the first day if you are just there for the grade. Very knowelegeble from real world experience, interested in student welfare
Cons: some of the stuff can be mildly boring, but most of it is very informative
Ahmadian is one of the best professors I had at tech, if more professors were like him I think i would have come away from tech knowing alot more (and with better grades to boot). He's willing to put in the extra effort to help students, and he does some pretty legit research too, all around an awesome professor. P.S. if he teaches system dynamics, he's good at that one too!

Pros: Practice tests similar to exams

Very easy self graded hw

Bonus hw for extra credit
Cons: Topic can be boring
Great professor. Always willing to help out and he's super chill if you talk to him about anything in general. DO THE HOMEWORK AND BONUS HOMEWORK! It's really easy and you grade your own assignment in class when it's due. The bonus homework is extra credit to your overall grade. 1 bonus homework is an extra 1% to your OVERALL grade so it helps a lot especially if you do great one test and bad on the other. Highly recommended for mech design.

Pros: --Really nice guy, will genuinely help with anything he can

-Cheap textbook (it’s just a printed version of his notes but he doesn’t provide electronic notes)

-Homework is self-graded so it’s an easy 100

-Test problems are in the back (there’s about 130 potential problems, each test has 10 random problems)

-Project is open-ended so you get lots of freedom.

Cons: -The class isn’t as easy as it once was and there was a lot of “false advertisement” in a sense. It’s NOT an easy A (or B for that matter).

-The final is NOT always optional (apparently)

-The Project sucks if you don’t get a good team. I spent most of the semester with a team that never wanted to meet so we ended up busting our asses the week before.

-Tests were graded harshly and poorly worded

-His on-the-board notes and comments were difficult to tell when they were important

-The text notes don’t give all details you need to solve the problems which was frustrating.

Here’s our class breakdown: 60% two tests, 15% HW, and 25% Project. 2nd test is on the last day of class and not during finals week.

I’ll start by saying he’s extremely nice and a good lecturer, but my opinion of him really soured towards the end. I don’t know if he just disliked our class that much (many people skipped most of the classes from March to April--- not me) or if he’s just changing the way he does things, but he really shook things up this year compared to previous years. He used to make the 2nd exam optional on the day of the exam, and he dropped hints that he was going to do the same, but then exam day came and we’re all sitting there without knowing the material begging him to make it optional like in years past. The last month of classes were either cancelled (to work on projects), rushed, or used for presentations so it was hard to know what to study.

The tests are also harshly graded and poorly worded. Like for example, a problem will say “Name some letters in the alphabet.” To which you’d write “a, b, c, d”. Well then you’d get your test back and see that you got 80% of the problem right, but it turns out he wanted you to list every little detail. There’s so many problems like this. (A real one would be like where he asks the function/purpose of a vehicle part but doesn’t ask for a set number of things despite the fact that he’s looking for a set number of specific details)

The class is incredibly boring and difficult to pay attention. I understand why most of my classmates skipped classes (a class of like 140 had maybe 30 students attending by March). The only reason I went was because I had hoped he’d drop hints on test problems but he didn’t do that very often really.

So one final problem I had: We were given an extra credit opportunity where we could do 200 “tags” (we had to read these horrible real customer complaints and decipher what the customer was complaining about) and receive 20 points added to our test. Most of these complaints are illegible, most of them aren’t even justifiable complaints (like half of them were customers crying about auto-garages giving them poor customer service), and I even encountered a few that weren’t even freaking English. Well I did all 200 tags (and then some) to ensure I got my points, well then it turns out the assistant that sent out the email to us gave us bad information… we were apparently supposed to do FOUR HUNDRED for 20 points and the 200 only counted for 10. Instead of sending an email apparently there was a quiet announcement made in class one day (I guess considering I went to every class and somehow missed it) but they never corrected the email. Whatever though, I’ll take my 10 point… OR SO I THOUGHT. Turns out the highly opinion-based assignment had “correct and incorrect” answers for the tags. Out of my 200 tags I was only give credit for around 50 tags, so I basically wasted about 4 hours of my time and got zero extra credit from it. It pretty much killed a lot of people’s hopes for an A.

I do think that he ended up either curving or giving us a less harshly graded Test 2, because I wasn’t sure I was going to even pass the second test yet managed to get a C+. My final grade shoud’ve been a B- and I ended with a B so somewhere in there he had to have floated us a few points.

I like him, I don’t regret taking the class, but considering the “easy A” reputation this class has it was a huge letdown. Don’t take this class unless you’re extremely interested in the subject.

Pros: Really nice professor, very passionate about teaching.
Cons: Can be stubborn and get frustrated with the class sometimes; he's a bit moody.
I got screwed at the end of the class. We showed up to the final and he told us on the spot that it was now optional. He said he would show us our grade before the final, and we could take that grade in the class, or try to improve it by taking the final (the final could possibly hurt you as well). I was certain that I had an A in the class, after calculating everything myself. He showed that I had a B, so I talked to him about it. He had recorded two zeroes for homework grades, even though I assured him I turned in every one. Then he told me it was not up for discussion, and because I was so upset, I just took the B and walked away. Very upsetting considering how much work I put into the class.

He lets you do a project that has anything to do with the subject of the course, but beware, it has to be very detailed research; he will know if you waited until the last week to do it. Homework was extremely easy and we graded them ourselves, but like I warned, make sure he records the grades correctly.

Pros: Very fun, makes the class simply, very knowledgeable
Cons: nothing
Dr. Ahmadian is by far the best System Dynamics professor you can get. He makes the class extremely simple by assigning only about 4 hw problems a week and grades one. Each exam has a practice exam that has 'very similar' problems to what you will see on the actual exam. Plus, he does know what he's doing and you can tell he loves it.
