It's not as hard as other people cut it out to be...use your TA's. Mine saved my life. I worked really hard and ended up with over an 100%. Just take this class seriously and you'll be fine.
Pros: Wants you to do well, will curve your grade up
2 essays, the third one is for extra credit (I suggest you do it)
No graded daily homework
Attend classes because he bases his exams on his lectures
Very organized
Interesting teacher with some humor

Essays are not terrible (if you can finish the reading needed for it) but they are due the class before the exams. So you only have a day to study for the exam.

If you are a full time student, you won't be able to manage this class (unless you're an athlete with a BS major in basket weaving or something). DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS.

Dr. Brunsma is a nice, funny guy and he is very knowledgeable about his subject. He is an entertaining lecturer who makes going to class an enjoyable experience.

The tests aren't too bad. He makes a study guide (usually the notes condensed) which he posts on Scholar for students to use.

There is a lot of reading (30-50 pages/night), but it isn't generally necessary for success on the tests/essays. If you only read the books which are required for papers, you'll do fine, and there are three of them.

Your grade on the papers solely depends on the TA you have.

Overall a good professor. He'll try to scare you with the amount of reading, but don't do it all, it's impossible. I didn't do much of it at all and I'm expecting an A- in the class.

Pros: Brunsma is a nice, funny guy. He is more of a guy that you'd want to have a beer with rather than lectured by for over an hour.
Cons: So. Much. Reading.

The tests are all short answer/essay.

Did I mention there is a lot of reading?
If you are taking 3 credit hours and this being your only class, then that's good. Otherwise, I suggest you avoid it and take it through another professor. Brunsma is an awesome guy and all, but you should probably steer away from his class.

Pros: Very informative. You can find detailed study guides for exams online if you look hard enough.
Cons: Tests are all short answer/essay so you really have to know your stuff going into it. Classes can get super boring and sometimes hard to pay attention in.
Brunsma is a cool guy and cracks corny jokes. I'd suggest sitting towards the front of the class to try and force yourself to pay attention.

Not an easy A, but you do learn some interesting things

Pros: -You don't have to go to class

-All tests are open note and online, including the final

-No homework

-Up to 13 POINTS TOTAL added onto your final grade, so LOTS of extra credit
Cons: -2 essays

Brunsma wasn't a bad dude. It was a pretty easy class and some units were a lot more interesting than others. You have the opportunity to get up to 13 POINTS added onto your entire grade. 5 points if you complete a third essay, 1 point for donating blood, 1 point for community service, 5 points if you complete ALL 10 sociological events and write a summary, and 1 point if you get an A on your last essay that is a letter to a government official.

Brunsma messed up my extra credit, however, and was trying to leave me with a 92.985 without rounding me even though I had done all of the extra credit events. However, he was very accommodating once figuring out there had been a mistake.

They can grade the essays kind of harshly. The first essay, which is required for everyone, required you reading a very dry book and then writing an essay. You had to complete at least 2 essays, but you could choose if you wanted to do essay #2 or essay #3. If you did all of them then you could choose between #2 and #3 being extra credit.

Apparently the professor cut the reading load this semester, but it's still a lot more work than virtually any other 1000-level class at Tech. Lots and lots of reading from three different books. The exams are most of the grade. Some of the questions come from the lecture and not the books, some from the book and not the lecture, some both, some neither. A lot of your grade is at the mercy of the TA who grades your work. However, one great thing about this class is that it's possible to earn up to 9 per cent added to your final grade in extra credit. If you can deal with a lot of reading and will do extra credit, this is a decently interesting class to take, even if it can be frustrating.

Pros: The material he covers is easy, and there are many opportunities for extra credit. He is also a very lenient grader when it comes to exam essays.
Cons: SO MANY BOOKS TO READ! There are 5 books required for this class, and they are all well over 200 pages each. The reading for this class are incredibly time consuming.
I really liked the material covered in this class, but I absolutely HATED how much reading was involved.

Pros: Thorough, interesting lectures

Easy tests
Cons: Lots of reading required to do essays (2 with a 3rd for extra credit)
There is a lot of reading assigned, but you can certainly get by without it. The way the tests are structured (the first 10-15 short answer questions are mandatory and the second half is 10 short answer questions from which you choose 4 to answer) you can easily get an A without reading from the textbook or the "reader". Without using those books I got a 99, 100, and 97 on the tests.

The reading IS required for the papers. They can be difficult if you don't understand what the books were talking about.

Overall, Dr. Brunsma is a good professor. He is knowledgable and enthusiastic about the subject matter and is a very relaxed guy. The lectures were easy to follow which provided me with good notes to study from for the tests.

Pros: The professor is very interesting and you can really tell that he is very passionate about the subject.

Class lectures are very fun and he cancels class often.

If you take advantage of all of the extra credit opportunities you can get up to 12 percentage points added to your final grade.

Subject matter is very pertinent to real life issues and discussions.
Cons: The exams are pretty hard even though they were all online and open book/note.

The TA's are a great resource on most occasions, but mine did not provide very much feedback.

This class is great, especially if you need it for CLE credit. The professor is very chill and the The lectures are genuinely interesting. It is not difficult to get an A in this class at all, if you do poorly on the exams the extra credit opportunities are enough to boost your grade.

Pros: Very nice guy knows his stuff

Will try to engage everyone in the class

Plays lots of music before class

Take the test in pairs/groups theyre online and show the correct answer after it is submitted. Rotate who goes first for each test a buddy of mine and i did it i got a 89 going first he got a 92 on the second time he got a 72 I got a 89. it improves your grade this way
Cons: Lots of assigned reading but he goes over the same general stuff in class not necessary but helpful

has guest speakers and events in class that will make their way to the test so go to class

TA grades your 2 mandatory essays
Great guy would recommend easy B class im a very conservative person and i feel he leans liberal i was still given a fair chance and my grade wasn’t negatively affected because of my views

Pros: Brunsma is passionate about his topic, which makes is class bearable. Has reasonable expectations about student performance. Assigns more reading than he knows students can juggle, he even said so himself. The readings aren't really necessary, just get an overall summary and you'll be fine. Start reading the essay books way ahead of time or you won't finish in time. Books are drab and difficult to get through.
Cons: READINGS ARE RIDICULOUS. In frequency and content to a lesser extent. Extra credit is necessary for a good grade unless you're just naturally a sociological thinker.

Pros: Gets you interested in thinking outside the box. He will challenge the convictions that you have established in high school and make you question the dynamics of people and society. Great professor for an introductory course.
Cons: There's a lot of reading...but this is college...so get used to it
The homework was several essays based on reading assignments. Keep up with the reading and you'll do fine for both the essays and the exams. The material itself is explained fairly well in the textbooks that are used.

Pros: Books and concepts are somewhat interesting

Brunsma can explain a theory well
Cons: Lectures don't align with graded material

Papers are difficult to understand

Class was scattered and made little to no sense
Do the extra credit even if you think you won't need it because you will.

Talk to your TA early and often! I got docked point just because I didn't go to their office hours.

Find a friend and do stuff together. That's the only way I survived.

Pros: the class is really interesting! it's a great start to thinking sociologically. brunsma is hilarious, friendly, and witty.
Cons: the class is really focused on lecture and brunsma seems to go on tangents a lot during his lectures... he can be hard to follow at times. and his exams are on random concepts he brushes over during lecture.
it's interesting and definitely a manageable class. keep up with his lectures and textbook assigned readings!

Dr. Brunsma presented the material to us very well and he taught in an environment that welcomed questions and discussion in the middle of lectures. He wanted us to think for ourselves and every single question he asked in his tests or quizzes could be answered in whatever way, so long as students defended their answers. He was a really great teacher and he made it easy to get an A.

Pros: It is a very interesting class and he makes the topics fun. Make sure to go to class since the tests are based off lecture. But he gives A LOT of extra credit. if you do the extra credit its a definite A.
Cons: The test are pretty hard and cover a lot of material. You also have to read like 20-30 pages a night and there are weekly quizzes.
I learned a lot.

The class can be kind of confusing sometimes, but as long as you take good notes you'll be fine. Make sure to go to his office hours for help on the essays to ensure you're on the right track because the grading process for the essays seems arbitrary at times. He provides a lot of extra credit opportunities, so make sure to utilize them.
