I hated this class. I thought that it would be easy and fun, but it was not at all. Sitting in the class was torture and studying for the exams was pointless. While some exam questions came from class and the practice exam online, many of the questions were completely random and irrelevant (such as, who was King when Haydn visited London his second time? This was actually a question on my final. Why is this relevant to music?!?) Anyway, I wouldn't take this class unless you want to dread Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays and spend the whole night before the exam googling answers to practice exam questions.

This class is a good area requirement, but you actually have to go to class. He gives one mid-term and a final, and gives you a review that are the same questions on the exam, so that makes the test cake, but you have to memorize all the musical selections that he gives you or you will drop a letter grade on that part of the exam. He gives quizzes almost daily on the iClicker, so you have to go to class. Overall, he is really entertaining, and the material is interesting if youre into music. You can write essays on movies for extra credit. Pretty easy A if you attend class, listen to the music selections, and do the review sheets

Cole is a funny guy and likes for his students to do well and makes the quizzes easy (if you go to class that is) and the tests were just the studyguides pretty much. Great teacher that likes what he does.

I am taking the online class, and honestly, it's difficult. There are 5 assignments due in the semester in addition to the 8 billion tests and quizzes. He is unfair in grading the assignments, thinks that we should all be music experts, and is very condescending in his remarks. If you can get Husser, take his online class. Otherwise, stay away from Cole in both the in class lecture, and the online class.

At first this class really got on my nerves. He has these powerpoints that are full of information that is completely irrelevant and unimportant. He also gives pop quizzes all the time (about 15 during the semester, but he drops the lowest 5). He also goes through the slides really quickly, so you have to kind of pick and choose what you think is important and what will be on a quiz (to get the most information, I suggest using your computer to type the notes. Writing them is almost impossible). Once you get the hang of it, it really isn't so bad. The exams (midterm and final) are easy. He basically gives you a "study guide" that is exactly the questions for the exam. The final is not cumulative. He goes on tangents a lot too. Sometimes he'll give a quiz that is just asking "are you here today?" and you get credit for it. You can get extra credit by watching some movies he mentions and writing a response to them.

He is very moody and this effects his test/quiz making. He said he would curve the class as a whole but we will not know until it is too late to drop the course. There is no indication of success in the class until you get your final grade, which is quite ridiculous for this type of class. Test questions are absolutely absurd in some cases, he needs to learn how to construct quizes/tests. If your looking for a class to fill an elective pick something else. Although I like jazz he made the class too stressful and it quickly became my most unpredictable class of the semester.

Pros: Online class, work at your own pace
Cons: Easy to get behind if you aren't careful, really difficult listening questions if you don't know anything/much about music
Prof. Cole has started using a new system that is NOT easy like in the past - don't plan on getting this done in just a few days at the beginning of the semester. There are 4 homeworks, and a whole bunch little quizzes, plus a midterm and a final (all online). Make sure not to fall behind, and pay attention to the little details at the beginning, because they'll come back to haunt you.

Pros: Online class
Cons: Hard to focus
I took the class online thinking it would be easy. I didn't have any interaction with the professor so I cannot comment on his teaching. All the material is taught through an online system that is very reading intensive. I found it hard to stay on top of the class due to the only deadline being that all of the quizzes had to be finished before the end of the class. I ended up doing most of the class the week before finals. Very dry material, similar to what is taught in a grade school music class. I got a C because of poor performance on the quizzes.

this guy is somewhat of a prick, he is extremely passionate about music and comes off as sort of a know-it-all who doesnt respect people who arent music nerds like he is. His lectures are retarded and pretty much pointless, half the time he babbles on about stuff thats not on the test and is of no interest to ANY college aged student. You can easily get an A by reading the book and studying the koofers available here.

this is one of the easiest class i've taken here at VT, second only to physical geology.

I took this class online--it was awful. I've heard the class is a lot better with Howell and Husser. For Cole's online section the listening questions (~50% of the material) are EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE yet they expect you to answer as if it were fact. The text pretty much says that most of the material is up for interpretation yet the quizzes accept only one possibility.

I loved about a dozen songs and despised the rest. Overall my appreciation and respect for music theory diminished. Much of the text seemed biased and opinionated. I'm just reminded to steer clear of pompous, elitist musicians who write textbooks.

I wouldn't say the class was all that difficult, but you need a 94% to get a solid A which is a challenge since you almost inevitably miss questions due to subjectiveness and ambiguity. There are 30 quizzes, 2 tests (midterm and final), 4 assignments. You can finish the class in 2-6 full 12 hour work days depending on the grade you want and how much you already know.

I have a friend who listens to classical music every day and plays classical instruments who took this course and got a C. I change the channel whenever I hear a classical song and ended up with an A- (took me about four 8-12 hour days). He enjoyed the class, but I dreaded it. If you are not into music theory I cannot, in good faith, recommend this class.

Cole is a nice guy, and definitely knows his stuff about music in America. The class is mildly interesting and the quizzes are nothing if you actually pay attention to his slides. I didn't even have to read the book, but I did need the CD also sold with the book. Honestly, the hardest part of the quizzes is being able to recognize tunes and/or instruments by ear. The quiz questions build up most of the tests, so do your best to remember them! Lastly, the extra credit is awesome if you're willing to dish out the time (which may be about three to four hours per week). If you pay attention and do the extra credit, there's no reason to get less than a B. An A+ is a distinct possibility.

Pros: Easy, in-class quizzes. Final exam is based off of quiz questions. Extra credit out the ass.
Cons: Hard to make it to class hungover.
Cole is the man. That class was laughably easy. I don't understand how many people don't get A's (an alarming amount of people don't). I think I finished the class with a 104%. He essentially grades you off of quizzes that he puts the questions in powerpoints off of his website. You must be really lazy if you can't look those questions up and know the answers minutes before (or even during) class. Also, I heard a rumor that his computer crashed one semester so he gave everybody an A. RC is the man.

I did not enjoy this class at all. Cole is impolite and his lectures are ramblings about composer history. The questions on his exams are ridiculous facts pulled out of context of the entire subject. Go to class and do all the extra credit and it should be an easy grade. It's getting the motivation to sit through it three days a week that is the difficult part. I would strongly recommend taking the online class instead of the lecture.

Very nice and fun if you don't get on his bad side. Very knowledgeable and into the topic. Pretty fun class if you like music history. Go to the lectures and listen and you should be fine. Has 15 random graded quizzes, highest 10 count, as well as 2 tests, non cumulative. Some quizzes are attendance. Tests are a little hard, but the final was the practice final for fall 07 and sp 08!! study the practice final!!!

I had Prof. Cole for MUS 3115, and it was terrible. His PowerPoints give you WAY too much extraneous information. It's good to take notes, but the best thing is to just study the review sheets, because those have all the questions that will be on the exams. He uses the dreaded iClicker a ton, so you do have to go to class. Easy class if you study the review sheets and go to class, hard otherwise.

No real clue what he's like, took it online. But he seems nice!

I'd highly suggest taking this course online, easy A. He also shows real concern if he notices people are falling behind. About half way through the semester, only about half the people were passing b/c they hadnt started the material (no deadline til exam time), so he just cut out about half our quizzes, etc!

You have to watch out, this guy is tricky. The class prior to our midterm he gave the class a very obvious hint that the practice exam was the exact same as the actual thing. Come exam day about 1/3 of the material was covered on the practice exam. I was completely unprepared, but still managed to get a b-. The class is easy enough if you put a minimal amount of effort into it.

I took the course online so didn't really see him in person but he seems like a good guy. He doesn't really answer your question at your e-mails but rather gives an astray answer. The assignments aren't hard but the assessments and exams are pretty rough if you don't know your way through them. It is not an easy A if you are taking the class online.
