PHIL 1304
Morality and Justice
5*****
Daskal is a great teacher. Very impartial and very non-judgmental, he is one of the few teachers who will both welcome and consider anyone´s answers or comments in class, but at the same time will offer possible criticisms or flaws in a fair, respectful way-- in other words, free thought is encouraged without the class being bogged down because they have to endure a professor who will encourage anything a person says and call it "unique" or "interesting" instead of "irrelevant" or "wrong" when it is. He is a very fair grader, and is flexible as far as extensions go. He also sometimes breaks the class up into discussion groups, which were surprisingly fun and interesting considering I usually hate group stuff. The course material and presentation was cohesive and logical, and the readings for class were challenging without being overwhelming. Knew everything about the material and could lecture off the top of his head.

really smart, could definitely be more entertaining. do his study guide and you'll ace the exams. "projects" were papers. not that hard. you don't need the book, he explains everything in class.

Pros: Interesting?

Professor knows what he's talking about.

Fair.
Cons: Essay exams can be a good or bad thing.

Lots of tedious out of class reading.

Breaking down concepts/writing papers can be irritating.

Honestly if you're thinking about taking this class to fill an area credit, I'd say look elsewhere. I took it because it seemed interesting, but it's a lot of work for a 1000 level class, more than you'll want to do believe me. The essay tests can be good or bad depending. The papers just seem like a huge hassle and since you've probably never written anything like them before, they're a pain as well. The out of class reading is just confusing and tedious, after a certain point I found myself not reading it, it's covered in lecture for the most part so if you go to class you'll hit all the important points anyway. All in all the class can be interesting and can give you some cute talking points in social situations about hot topic issues, but the class is probably more work than it's worth.

Pros: It's a philosophy class. If you know the gist of what each philosopher's stand is and their argument style, and you are a decent debator then you'll do fine.
Cons: Your entire grade is determined by your TA. If you get a TA that grades easy, you'll do very well. If your TA is difficult, you won't do so well. It's that simple.
Daskal is a really nice guy and very passionate about his subject. He likes to open the lecture to comments and questions quite frequently. He's really open to opinions and ideas so don't be afraid to raise your whenever you feel the urge to say something. He uses power points and posts them online so you can use them to take notes.

Pros: Honestly, his class is pretty easy. I didnt get the book, i didnt go to lecture, and i have done well in the class. that being said, i have a little background in philosophy. But he publishes his lecture notes, and covers everything for the exams and papers just with those.
Cons: With such an easy class, there is little incentive to show up. Also, recitations are graded on attendance. Dont miss those.
