CHEM 2536 - Organic Chemistry
Gandour is infinitely better than Lazar who taught my first semester O Chem class. I think he's the best teacher for this course but honestly I didn't have anyone else so it's a little subjective.
Pros: Gandour is funny in a kind of awkward sort of way. He'll say a lot of things that will make you laugh because you feel uncomfortable but it helps to keep you awake at 8 AM. His tests are really easy compared to other O Chem tests mostly because he gives out practice tests that are extremely similar to the actual test. He also has a help session the night before each test with office hours almost all day that day. He loves to answer questions and spend time helping people on an individual level. He gives out worksheets for each lecture that make taking notes easy.
Cons: The homework can sometimes feel impossible because you just can't find the reactions in the notes or the book. Sometimes it's tough to get class participation points because you often have to prepare the night before to have answers ready and even then the stuff you know, probably everyone else knows so the odds of being picked are low. Like I said in the pros it does get kind of awkward sometimes but you just have enjoy that.

there's no hw or quizzes...there's only 4 midterms and a final...the tests are pretty easy if you study for them because he gives you a study guide a couple days before the test and it is the same exact format as the test...he also posts tests from previous years which are also in the same format as the study guide..so he practically gives you the test beforehand...there is also LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT...and his policy about the final is great (it replaces your lowest test grade and if you are one of the top 5 scorers in the class you automatically get an A in the class no matter what you got on the previous tests)...i would recommend him for anyone..the only bad thing about him is that he makes you feel stupid when you ask questions

Dr. Gandour is very intelligent, but he expects his students to learn the material out of class. The time in class is spent going over examples so if you did not prepare for class, then you really get nothing out of it. Go to his study sessions, and you will do well. He also cares about his students which is wonderful because he will answer all questions you have.

His powerpoint slides are well written and he makes himself available most of the time. He drops the lowest test grade and there's always extra credit on the tests.

I liked Professor Gandour a lot as a person. It's obvious he really knows his stuff and has a passion for organic chemistry. How he ran his class however is another topic..

His lecture consisted of going over packets on the overhead that students completed the night before. Yes it was a good opportunity to get extra credit if you submitted yours, but in terms of learning the material it never seemed to help.

His tests and quizzes were silly, as he would give you the old koofers from the year before and not many things changed, even the format was the exact same. This sounds nice, but then you get to the second semester of organic chemistry and realize you didn't learn anything in this class, even with a good grade. Good professor, just not a productive way to run the class.

Prof. Gandour definitely knows organic chemistry, and it is very obvious that he wants everyone in his class to understand the material and succeed. However, I was not a huge fan of is teaching style. He would make worksheets, tell the students to do them, and then during lecture would share the students' answers. This was pretty much what he did in lecture everyday. I felt that I didn't learn anything from him; I relied almost entirely on the book. Luckily, the ochem book that VT uses is excellent and a great resource. He is a very nice man, and if you are able to teach yourself organic chemistry, you will be fine. I got an A in it, but it was no thanks to Rich Gandour.

Pros: He knows what he is talking about, but has a hard time getting it out sometimes and favors certain people in classes. His worksheets are nice. His tests are like the practice tests.
Cons: He is very scatter brained and makes you feel dumb when you ask questions a lot of the time. As a student with a busy schedule, it is impossible to prepare for class the way he wants you to (aka read, look at the powerpoint, and go through the worksheet) so it is often hard to get extra credit points for giving your paper to him so he can show the class.
Not a fan of ochem, and if you are then you may like him better. I wish he offered more review/help sessions like Bump did.

Pros: -Lots of extra credit opportunity

-Knows the material very well
Cons: -The homework is easy, but time consuming and repetitive.
Professor Gandour tries his best to engage the class in the learning material. He is very intelligent and excels at teaching through his method of using worksheets that you print out and bring to follow along with the lectures. He uses Sapling Learning for online homework, which is a well set up and usable website and the homework itself is very easy, but there is usually a good amount of it. His tests are very fairly graded and the pre-tests he puts up are usually very similar to the tests themselves.

Gandour is my BAE. He is pretty engaged and has funny comments. He has a tendency to call people out if they skip or is late but it's all fun. He also gives out practice exams JUST LIKE THE EXAM. Other people say his exams are difficult and he does have this thing where he makes some exams super hard and others super easy. He also gives out $5 to students to significantly improves on their exam scores. He is chill and I'm gonna miss him a lot as a professor.

Pros: Professor Gandour really cares about how well his students do overall in his class and makes sure that they know the subject at hand. He provides students with many examples in class and always keeps his lectures interesting. Gandour tries to memorize everybody's name even though there may be 250 students in the classroom. Genuinely, an awesome and nice professor overall.
