Tax Impact on Decisions

I think it it time for Dr. Hicks to retire. While he is very knowledgeable about tax, he is a horrible teacher! I have been a straight A student and love to learn, and I learned almost nothing in this class. While presenting the subject matter, Hicks was very disorganized, making it very hard for his students to understand the subject matter. There were no slides to go off of, I didn't know where in the book to study, and when I did study the subject matter that he said was on the test, I was still not prepared and failed the tests. I think it is unfortunate to recieve feedback from other students that took different teachers and are doing well and actually learning about tax. I know that if I had taken another teacher, I would have learned more and done better in tax. There was no structure in the lectures and Dr. Hicks rambled on about real life examples; while real life tax examples are helpful, they were not tested and stuff we didn't understand was tested. I feel cheated on my education after taking this class.

Pros: Willing to help in office hours, nice guy.
Cons: Cannot clearly communicate material, at the age where assignments have the wrong answer marked (online stuff), rambles off topic in class.
Time to retire, period. Great guy, knows his stuff, but students should not have to put up with his failure to communicate and age/hearing issues.

Well, the material is pretty hard, assignments were hard until we found the answers online. Never ask for an open book test. The average was around a 55. He pretty much makes it so that no one gets below a B by the end I think but its not fun along the way. I heard the other teacher was bad too tho so maybe he's the best way to go.

Pros: Class is relatively easy. Gives homework answers if you go to class.
Cons: Does not lecture well. Rambles a lot when teaching and doesn't use a lot of helpful lecturing materials. Often just sits in front of class and talks making it very boring and hard to take notes. I learned almost nothing in this class, but still got a good grade.

Cons: Sometimes assignments and tests were hard because it wasn't very clear where to get resources & information from.

Pros: Nice guy, has some interesting stories
Cons: Doesn't really go over actual material that will be on the test. He's pretty disorganized too and didn't always collect homework after spending hours doing it because he felt "lazy" that day.
He is a nice guy and knows a lot about tax, I just feel like I didn't learn that much. I always seemed to read and memorize the wrong stuff from the book since it was always hit or miss what we'd be tested on. He does have a lot of little graded assignments though so those do help some. Wish I would have taken it with another teacher.

Pros: Easy teacher in comparison to the other tax professor.
Cons: Boring professor and I didn't learn a thing in the class. Professor would ramble on about different tax topics and I think he is senile.
Ended up with a C in class, the easy homeworks help to boost up your exam grade. I don't think he curved for my class, took him Spring Semester 2011. If you want to learn something, take the other tax professor but it will also require more effort into the homeworks.

Pros: Nice older guy

Cons: Gets off topic, can't hear well

Exams are insanely hard compared to class.

Powerpoint slides don't really help.

This content of the class is hard. Thankfully if you take it with Hicks you have a 90% chance of passing solely on the curve; my exam grades were 45, 89, 52 and I still ended up with a C+/B-. The exams are ridiculously hard, his slides aren't of much help so make sure to read the book yourself and completely learn the material.

I feel like in the end, I really didn't learn much in this class. Dr. Hicks is a nice enough guy, and he knows a lot about tax, but I feel as if he has a hard time communicating the subject to his students. Also the tests are extremely hard, but he curves it so pretty much everyone gets a B in the end. You'll get a good grade, but getting there won't be fun.
