If you can help it, don't take him. He's a nice guy and loves his past (he went to Alabama and he will definitely let you know QUITE A FEW TIMES), but he really put me into comatose. I am pretty sure I have slept more deeply in that class than I do every night. The second he opens his mouth just puts me to sleep. He tells you that you don't have to come to class in the beginning, and then when no one shows up, he freaks out.

The entire class is disruptive the entire time (from what I hear, I wasn't awake most of the time...), and he reads his powerpoints directly. All of his information is in the book; don't listen to him when he says it isn't. I mean, he wrote the book...

I was doing horribly in the beginning because I thought Sociology was common sense and I didn't have to study; I had a low C, and then on the final I got a B and it replaced both of my exams from before. That's the one thing about Hughes, if you score higher on the final than the previous one or two exams, it'll replace the lower score with the higher final.

Mike Hughes is a decent guy, but not a good teacher. First off you'll notice that he has a stuttering problem and he'll mention it right off the bat. It becomes a definite issue during his lectures, so be forewarned. The second thing is that this class will by far be one of your most boring classes. The lectures are long, Mike seems to linger on topics concerning statistical data way too long, and he will talk the entire hour and 15 of class. Thirdly the exams are very difficult. If you don't read the book very carefully then you will do poorly on the exams, and if you don't take careful notes you will do poorly on the exams. About 60% of the material comes from lecture and 40% from the book. There are 3 exams and that's your grade. 2 exams and then a final. BUT if you score better on the final than your first two exams, it replaces both the first two exams and that's your grade for the class. So make sure to study for the final! I would recommend taking psych or sociology with a different professor, but if you get Mike make sure you heed my warnings.

He knows his stuff but he is very boring. Sometimes curves depending on grade distribution. Since he made it hard to pay attention in a class that I thought would be interesting...I won't be taking a class with him again.

Pros: Dr. Hughes loves Sociology, you can really tell therefore making him a really good professor. He has a cute stuttering problem and makes a lot of jokes that makes everyone laugh. There are two exams besides the final. 50% comes from the lecture, 50% comes from the book, of course also overlapping. If your final exam grade is higher than one of your other exam grades it replaces that grade. Or if it is higher than both of them, your final exam grade is your final grade.

He gives extra credit every week where you can get up to 5% added to your final exam grade, which is a whole lot.
Cons: You may get tempted to skip class cause many people do, honestly don't, Being in lecture helps a lot for the exams.

Intro to Sociology was hard. But you can blow off the first 2 exams and do well on the final. Whatever you get on your final exam is your final Grade. He curves somewhat and he is funny in class. But you can not go to class and just read the book and do okay in the class. Exams are impossible so study study study! Go to the class before the exam... and make sure to read. You'll do okay. He wrote the book so what he lectures on is exactly what's printed in the book.

Please... save yourself... do not take this class! He knows his subject... he tries to relate... he is prepared but his communication and fairness... don't help at all.. His class is based off of 3 exams...one which is the final. His tests are very hard and unless you read a book once and get the material dead on, don't take his class.

Pros: Gives three assignments during the semester that involve researching and arguing a topic in a four page paper. Each is with up to 2 points for a total of 6 points on your final GRADE

Cons: Extremely difficult to pay attention in class

Large amount of outside readings that are tedious for one exam question

Only gives 2 tests (25% each) and a final 50%)
Professor Hughes is a wonderful professor who has a passion for sociology. However, teaching doesn't seem to be his true passion. Almost always came to class just as it was supposed to start or late. Lectures orally with no guidance or notes on the board, he teachers from research statistics and graphs, and speaks. Very interesting material but extremely difficult to pay attention during lecture.

Sociology is by far one of my favorite subjects to take on top of my Biology major for fun (sociology minor) however this class discouraged me from my love of the topic. The material is extremely interesting, especially for someone looking to go into medicine, however, the class itself is structured around three exams which really knock you down unless you memorize the textbook.

Exams consisted only of multiple choice questions, a rarity for sociology classes which usually revolve around the understanding of theories in short answer or essay questions. No such thing here. If there had been homework or projects to help buffer the poor performance on the two exams and final, I feel my grade would have been higher. You understand all the topics, theories and studies talked about, and I wish I had had a chance to show this in the class, as the exams covered very little on these important topics, or questions were very random. He will replace you lowest test score(s) with your final if you do better on one or both, but don't be fooled, the questions on the final are extremely specific and come from minuscule topics covered in the textbook. Spent 4 days going through his study guide given and reading the book/filling out the guide, and I did worse on the final than any of my past exams and I ended with a C in the class.

Overall a poor experience with this class, wish I had saved my GPA from this one, a very unnecessarily low grade for what should be an easy class.

If you do take it, the only advice I have is do all the extra credit papers and READ THE TEXTBOOK. That's it. Don't bother with his study guide, it helped me very little when it came to the exam. Everything he pulls is from the textbook.

Dr. Hughes is an excellent professor. He gets really into teaching and knows a lot about sociology. He does research in the subject and has a passion for it. He does have a lisp, but he doesn't let it get in his way, and I thought the way that he approached it on the first day was admirable. He just sort of said, "It doesn't bother me and it shouldn't bother you." I haven't tried to go to his office hours, but he always says he is very available and likes company. He wrote the book, so he uses it a lot. His lectures do drag on most of the time, but when you're teaching to 300, it's hard to keep everyone engaged. I'd say he does his best. His curving goes like this: if your final exam grade is higher than either or both of your first two exam grades, it can replace one or both. So essentially, if you do well on your final exam, that grade can be your overall grade in the course. He says that it typically doesn't inflate grades; it just allows those who don't work to their full potential on one of the first two tests or freak out to be able to be fairly represented. Overall, I think he's a great teacher.

I have been in Hughes' sociology class for about a month now and have attended every class, read every book and "reader" assignment, and taken notes on the notes for every class. I felt confident about the first exam, since I put many hours into studying for it. Even after the exam, I was sure that I had gotten a 95 at the lowest. But, I ended up with a 78, an 8 0 with the 2 point curve. The class gets really old and routine, but Hughes tries to keep it entertaining with the examples he performs. He seems like a nice guy, but a lot of the exam questions were ones that didn't seem like they had to do with the main points of the materials at all.

Hughes is one of the most BORING teachers ever!! He knows his stuff pretty well but he has trouble communicating it. I would definitely recommend getting another instructor for intro. to sociology. He spends the whole class (like 1 hr and 1/2) talking about one thing. He goes on and on and on and it doesn't even matter for the exam. As long as you memorize definitions and know all of the differences in perspectives you will do well in his class. It just makes you want to sleep because it's so boring. Oh and he spends a LOT of time talking about sex. So if you want that then get him as your instructor.

This is a pretty boring class but its helpful to go and do your best to pay attention especially if you don't read the book. Even though the first two exams didn't count it helped my grade a little in the end. I got an 86 on the final and ended up with an 88 in the class. I would recommend reading the book! The notes are not enough to get you through the exams. It takes studying and the reading is time consuming but it is possible to do well in the class. Its not the most enjoyable but it is doable. And as for Prof. Hughes..well he tries hard. If you put in the effort you'll be fine

Not the best teacher, but very knowledgeable and obviously loves what he is teaching. Likes to talk about his college years in a frat, and sometimes gives fun examples from "back in the day." He stutters a lot, but you can still easily understand him. His lectures can get pretty boring, especially with the numerous useless graphs. Still not too hard of a class, but you should definitely go to class, the tests are half lecture and half textbook. You will need to study everything, and definitely read a lot of the text because some very specific questions show up.

he's a good teacher, you will learn a lot. he is kind of boring, but if you pay attention and take good notes you'll do fine. he wrote the text book, so if it's highly emphasized in the book, chances are it'll be on the tests. his grading policy is weird but is great for your grade if you do well on the final. biggest turn off about him is that he gives off the impression that he's only at tech to be a researcher, not a professor. he doesn't seem too terribly interested in helping you if you ask questions.

The lectures are so boring. It's really hard to pay attention and he gets off topic and starts ranting fairly often. It's difficult to know which part of what he's saying matters for the class and what is just him ranting. The one good thing is he curves grades and the tests aren't that hard in the first place. If you go to class and study with the book and notes from class you should do okay. But take it with a different professor.

He may be able to write the book and know the subject matter, but he is awful at actually teaching it to students. Aside from the fact that he will likely put you to sleep, you will not know what he is talking about at any given moment. I went to class maybe 5 times throughout the semester, and got the same grade as many of my friends who did attend, because you wont actually learn anything. Avoid this class, or rather this professor, if at all possible.

the worst teacher i have ever had the unfortunate experience of being taught by. he goes off on tangents in his lectures that have absolutely nothing to do with the material; you'd think that since he wrote the textbook, his lectures would have something to do with that material but NO. he is ridiculous and also completely RUDE one-on-one. does not care about his students at all. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

Hughes tries to make his class as interesting as possible given that it is a lecture class. Half the time he spends his time talking about pot which is very entertaining. He gives you study guides for the exams, which are the only grades in the class, but they are helpful. Get a group of friends to split up reading the chapters assigned and take notes because there's no way you're going to read all of it.

After reading what people had to say about hughes I was terrified that I was going to fail his class. But I came to realize that he prepares you for the test very well so long as you go to class and read the textbook (which some students find incredibly difficult to do). However, if you try and study, and yes you DO need to study for his tests, then you should be fine.

classes were a bit boring, but they had a lot of material that was later on the tests. READ the book AND the supplementary material. Also, previous tests other than the ones he supplies are very helpful. Tests are somewhat hard, but if you do what he says, you will do well. final test has at least 20% verbatum questions from the first two
