WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!

Through my three years at Tech I've never had a problem with any teacher, no matter how badly they were talked about among Business students or on Koofers but she is absolutely horrible!

This semester (Fall 2011) she changed her whole syllabus and has decided to just give out 4 exams and a final. In a class like this which is practically a math class only w/ business applications, you have to do some amount of homework to understand the material! She gives out "suggested exercise" problems and encourages us to use the forums on Scholar to discuss the problems and ask questions. Let me just say that it is impossible to actually communicate math problems via the internet.

Her exams are horrible as well, they are nothing like we she prepares you for.

After some pesky students bothered her for extra credit, she's finally decided to give out projects for extra credit but they come with the most ridiculous requirements and completing one took hours to do.

She's no help in office hours. The many times I've gone she basically blew me off while I watched her spend hours with other groups answering their questions.

I've always been a A/ B student but this semester thanks to her even with the extra credit and all, I'm forced to withdraw from the class and take it all over again which has set me behind and caused me a whole lot of headaches.

Seriously, don't take her. Even if this means the decision is her class vs. another professors at 8AM, I would take the 8AM and suffer through early mornings if I were you. I have never written reviews about any professor but she is just absolutely horrible that I just had to say something and warn everyone else.

Pros: Extra Credit opportunites
Cons: No homework, I guess
She is honestly the worst teacher I have ever had while at Tech. Her lectures are pretty much pointless, as instead of going through problems to teach, she reads off of slides. I had a huge problem with this because when I was preparing for the tests, I had only seen one example problem, and even then, it was talked through while she stood at her computer.

On top of this, she provided a few "practice tests." On both occasions, none of the material covered on the practice was on the exam. Her explanation was that she wanted us to try to do them in an hour and 15 min (one class time)... We're all college students. We know how to budget our time.

Lastly, her tests were extremely hard. Most of the class was flooding her office because a large number of students were struggling (over half of the class withdrew). She offered extra credit projects, but they took hours and are weighted to her standards, meaning students often didn't get full credit for their work.

I suggest taking any other teacher. You will regret having James as a Teacher, I sincerely hope the department does something about her.

Cons: I'm not one to complain about professors, but I honestly have never been so discouraged Or in shock of how little James wants to help you.

She once asked me to skip class so I could go to her office hours to ask a question. If I couldn't skip class then she said I was pretty much SOL. I'm sorry but of all people a professor should not be asking you to skip class.

She really isn't encouraging and has said "I'm only here for research." I thought teaching was part of research?

She also didn't offer any graded assignements except tests this semester. She did offer extra credit, but it was very involving and time consuming, you aren't guaranteed any points from it though.

Pros: The only thing I can see is she does seem kind of nice from what I can tell... HOWEVER....
Cons: She doesn't teach. She reads off half-completed slides and expects you to be able to fill in the blank. Her practice tests were a complete waste of time, and the homework is tedious, but ungraded. I went to office hours once and she told me I had 5 minutes... The tests were very difficult and her response when asked what would be on the test was always "Everything is fair game".
Take this with someone else. I am a student who has never had to retake a class before. I have A's and B's in all of my classes. However, either I am stupid and can't handl12406 or Tabitha James is a bad teacher. I studied religiously for her exams, only to do poorly on them and not receive a curve. Half of my class actually ended up withdrawing. In my mind, if that many people are displeased with the course, you need to change something about it, but who am I to complain, being just a tuition-paying student. Her extra credit projects given took hours to complete (I timed one at 8 hours), and often added little more than a couple points to an exam grade. Also, for the those of you who go to class, you will find yourself counting the times she says "Ok" or "Alright". Its after every sentence. I counted 112 times one class.

I stuck with this class and steadily improved my test grades in the hope of a final small curve. I received a D+ and had no clue what final grade was until the day after grade submissions, which I'm sure she did so people like me couldn't try and make an effort to bring your grade up. This class has been my worst experience at Virginia Tech. If you business majors thought they empo was bad, this class will give you a new reason not to sleep at night.

Pros: You'll learn more with James than with any of the other BIT 2406 professors

Offered extra credit, but it was more effort than it was worth
Cons: She is a bitch if you try to talk to her after or outside of class

Nitpicks for points on tests and homework

The homework problems can take hours to complete

Exams are just like the homework (other classes had much easier multiple choice exams)
Take it with someone else. If you want to really learn the material, you can attend James's class, but enroll in it at your own risk.

I taught friends in other classes the material. They got 90's and 95's on their teachers' exams based on what I taught them. Both of my exam grades were in the 60's.

I should of listened to previous ratings. She really isn't a good prof. Exams were long and hard to finish in time. Hws were so hard and long. She did give out alot of extra credit tho. Reading quizzes online before class can add up to 5% to grade and all 3 tests I got 5 points extra credit from attendance some random day. Pop quizzes - she has 8 drops 3 and half were ask yourself a question - about anything. Other than extra credit opportunities - not recommended.

Pros: extra credit, but you would be better off taking this class with a different teacher and no extra credit
Cons: basically everything about this class
I was starting to get fed up with her so I thought I would look at the reviews on here, and surprise! they are all bad. All the reviews I read pretty much echoed what I was thinking. It is impossible to pay attention in class because all she does is read off powerpoint slides. There is no homework to help you stay on pace or to boost your grade, just "suggested exercises" that leave you more confused than you were before because there are no explanations for them. She wants you to use the forums on scholar for help but they are only helpful sometimes because you cant explain math models with a couple of lines of text.

I have never recieved less than a B in a class at tech, but in this class I am fighting for a C, even with all the extra credit.

She also says "okay" or "alright" after every sentence which gets really annoying.

Seriously, take this class with another teacher.

Information Security
3***
Very nice professor that knows quite a bit about the field. The problem is because there are no exams for this class and her quizzes are memorize a bunch of questions, her lectures essentially become a bore because we don't have to pay attention to them in order to get an A. She never gives you a warning before a deadline is approaching, until you notice it the night before it's due. When she gives a specific instruction, she is very strict about everybody following those rules without change. The class is an easy A if you do her homework she assigns everyday (bulk of your grade). Her semester project is the only difficult part of the class where you have to find a company and interview them to figure out their security flaws.

Pros: Um...
Cons: I really tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but I just can't. I thought she did a halfway decent job of explaining the material, but this class is seriously awful. First off, her tests are near impossible. No matter how much you study, expect to fail at least one of them. (unless you are some sort of BIT wonderchild) Second, no curves. Ever. (she honestly doesn't care if the majority of the class fails the exam) Third, I recommend doing the extra credit but realize it will take you multiple hours (like >7) to get a few points on an exam. Fourth, she doesnt give hw which may sound nice, but this is the kind of class where you need homework. Bottom line: James sucks, force add another professor. Wish I had.

Cons: Does not let students see there exam 1 week after it is given even if she doesn't posts grades till 1 week after the exam.

In all honesty she is the worst professor I have ever had. On the first 2 exams I got As and then on the 3rd I got a 50! She did not post grades for the 3rd till 1 week after the exams so when i went to her office hours she would not let me see what I did wrong. I could go on and on about the problems with her. She truly tries to screw students over. I don't understand it except for that her life outside of teaching sounds miserable so she tries to make students' lives miserbale. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!

The worst teacher I have had at VT so far, she will NOT help you if you go to her office hours so don't waste you're time. I got A's in all my other business classes and a B in this one. She is a TERRIBLE teacher that doesn't explain the work very well at all

honestly, she is a terrible teacher. there is no good BIT 2406 teacher, but DO NOT GET TABITHA JAMES. her mentality is to catch you on hw and mark you off for small errors. HWS are very long and very difficult.

Unwilling to help
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had. Her only grades were tests, which were unnecessarily hard. If you had problems with the homework and went by for help, she would literally sit and tell you to figure it out. She refuses to show you anything twice; apparently seeing it one time briefly in the classroom should be enough to make you an expert on the subject. In short, I can sum up Dr. James in one sentence (and if I could make these letters bigger, I would): AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Do not take this professor. Avoid at all costs. She does not care at all if you do not understand the material. She also is a prodigy and feels that everyone should learn concepts as fast as she does.
