she can be monotoned and boring. i fell asleep all the time. if you review the powerpoints, read the book a little and go over the study guides, you should be able to pull out an A or B.

She is very fair and even let me make up a test once that I flat out slept through. Bio isn't exactly the most fun class I have ever had, but as far as teachers goes she is pretty good. I took her class the first semester and decided to take with her again because I had gotten used to her teaching style and knew what to expect. Plus, she gives study guides for each test and if you know what is on the study guide you will do well. Her class isn't necessarily something that I take info away from...I would much rather read the book than sit through the class because I feel I can learn the same info from the comfort of my on pajamas. But, this semester she has started using the dreaded i-Clicker...but it only counts for 5% of your grade... Her exams are on Koofers and although she doesn't use the exact same test, a lot of the questions are the same. Just be careful though because whoever posted the Koofer did NOT CORRECT THEIR ANSWERS!!!!

Pros: Her quizzes and homeworks are easy
Cons: The test material is nothing like her slides and the book
The previous year's advice and ratings are SO misleading. This class was much much more difficult than I was expecting. The material that you are tested on comes from little examples she says during class and random diagrams she expects you to memorize. I read through each chapter and tied notes into the powerpoints to find myself struggling with each test. This is something that many of my friends in the class have been experiencing too. There is no way to study for her tests

Lipscomb's class is okay. Her voice is boring and monotone but her powerpoint slides are from the book's publisher, so if you read the book you don't even have to pay attention. 5% of your grade is through iClicker points (they really help at the end). My suggestion is to take your laptop, go to class, facebook, check your e-mail, do the homework that's due for next class..whatever, and click in whenever she has an iClicker question up. Make sure you read the book thoroughly b/c her exam questions are straight from the book. HW is super easy and directly in the book also. She never curves or gives out extra credit so really try from the beginning of the semester and you'll be fine. Also, do the study guides on blackboard. They help when tests and finals come around.

Ecology is for a very specific type of person. If you're more interested in the cellular or physiological aspects of biology, you are not gonna like this class. The information is VERY dry, and if you're not a plant person you're gonna have a very hard time caring at all. Unfortunately, Lipscomb's teaching style does not make it easy. She is a very nice woman. She assigns grades fairly, makes herself available to her students, and will always answer your questions - but her lecturing style is incredibly dull. As for her exams, they're easier in this class than they are in her General Biology classes. Most of the questions come directly from the notes and stuff she says in class; the only time I used the book was for homework assignments. The homework assignments are REALLY easy, she gives iClicker points in class, and she has "class assignments" that are basically graded on completion, so there is a little bit of grade buffer there, in case you're not doing well on the exams. There is no final curve, but depending on how the class is doing she may opt not to assign plus or minus grades.

Principles of Biology

Pros: Iclickers based on attendance solely; since you have to go to every class, it's a grade booster
Cons: Flipped classroom format; do busy work in class, teach yourself outside of class before each lesson

Too much work for little reward gradewise

If you like typical lecture format classes, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. It follows the flipped classroom format, which means you watch unhelpful powerpoint videos to teach yourself the material, and you are then quizzed on it. You then have to attend all classes in order to turn in busywork she makes you do. The exams aren't too bad, but make sure you put in a lot of time studying. She lectures at you in the beginning of class for a bit, touching on the main points of the lessons, but she has a monotone voice that is hard to pay attention to. This semester's topics were far easier to learn than the first semester's, but my grade was worse because of the way the class was taught. Avoid any and all flipped classrooms at all costs.

I came into Virginia Tech as a Biology major, unaware of the experimental flip style classroom that was in place in the Biological Science Department. Coming in and being expected to teach yourself everything has just been too much. The "Flipped Classroom" means you watch an online narrated presentation, take a 5 question quiz, and then go to class with no time to review the concepts and complete a worksheet in a group and hope you understand all the concepts, because there are no times for questions or answers. I'm really not sure if a different professor would help, but when I sought Dr. Lipscomb for help, she had no answers or useful feedback for me. AVOID

Dr. Lipscomb is an outstanding teacher! I thought she would be boring considering what everyone wrote about her, but she wasn't in the least bit. Her class is easy to handle as long as you attend her classes and take good notes...whatever is in your notes is on her exam, which makes studying a breeze. She shows Planet Earth clips once a week. She takes attendance daily with an iclicker and gives occasional easy homeworks on situations she wants us to read. She is always available for help. She's soft-spoken, so don't sit in the back of the classroom.

Pros: Easy Quizzes

Easy HW
Cons: The easiness of her assignments is Extremely misleading, for her test questions are disproportionately more challenging and vague than her classroom material appears.
I do not recommend Mary Lipscomb as a teacher to those who do not have an interest in ecology. If you are taking this class purely because it is required, choose someone else with a more interesting teaching style and less confusing test questions.

I love Dr. Lipscomb's class. I feel like after passing 1005 and 1006 I can call her Mary :P. She was really there for her students. Very available, the homeworks are easy, the study guides are straightforward. Exams are difficult but very fair. She is a little dry at times but I still LOVED her class.

Pros: Very knowledgable. Exams are relatively easy even with minimal studying.
Cons: Boring.
Lipsocomb has a distinct voice, it always sounds like she's about to start crying. The course material is basically all previously studied information, especially if you take an advanced placement course in high school. The online homework assignments are easy but time consuming and frequent. One for every lecture. Exams are easy enough if you pay attention in class and study a moderate amount. For the final, half the questions were almost word for word pulled from other exams and the other half on new material which was siginificantly simpler. Occassionally, there will be an in class assignment for a few points but they don't make much of a difference on your final grade. Spread your studying out over the span of a few days prior to an exam. Maybe a chapter a day and then overall review the day just before the exam. There's a lot of little bits of information you need to just straight up memorize.

Professor Lipscomb is very monotone in all of her lectures. Her voice tends to crack as she talks as well, as if she gets nervous in front of big classes. Her class is pretty straight forward for the most part.. yet difficult. You should definitely keep up with the reading and study guides because it DOES help. She uses a lot of the charts straight from the book, and some questions right from the study guides. Other than that, just study study study. A lot of her questions on the tests are tricky and difficult.. and expect at least 5 questions that are "all of the above", "none of the above" etc etc. Why the class is definitely difficult.. I managed to get a B on the first test.. so just try to keep up with the work the best that you can and study hard.

Pros: -Posts lectures online -Good about posting grades immediately
Cons: -She is very boring and has a monotone voice -What she teaches in her lecture is usually not whats going to be on her test
This class is really boring! If you can take another teacher I would recommend to do so. You have to make sure you're in class because she takes attendance through i-clicker and you can only miss class three times. Also, her test questions are not always what's in her lecture, so you need to make sure you know the details of each chapter. I would recommend using her lecture notes as a guide to what you need to study in the book.

Prof. Lipscomb presents a lot of information in her powerpoints, but to be fully prepared for the test you should use her study guide outline and prepare a study guide for each chapter. It requires more work to prepare the outlines, but it helps you memorize the information. Going to class and taking notes off of her powerpoint is not enough to do well in the class. She uses the iclicker system, which really does help you figure out what you still need to study.

avg instructor. a little monotone. but the tests are generally straight forward and she makers herself avaliable either for office hours or over email.

one complaint is some of the options she gives you on her multiple choice tests. alot of the questions have options that include "a&b; a,b &c; all of the above"
