Dr. Long is an excellent teacher for this course. I really learned to write effectively in this class thanks to her persistence and effective class layout. This class really isn't that hard at all. I don't understand how anyone can complain about it.

CHEM 1045
General Chemistry Lab

Cons: The class in general.
This is a terrible introductory lab. Making your life difficult seems to be her motive in the class. Hours of pointless bullshit lab reports will waste your time. All this work for a one credit class but unfortunately for certain majors you need it to graduate. The lab manual is poorly written and is often confusing and hard to follow. The T/A's are nearly impossible to understand and the work you do in the lab is mindless, pointless, and time consuming. Just put your head down do the work and take the class and never look back at it again because you surly wont want to. Oh yeah one more thing, if you don't show up to lab "prepared" you get bitched at and sent away and get an automatic 50 for the lab, so make sure you have all your work done because for each lab you will have at least a two hours of out of class work to do. This class is a pain in the ass.

CHEM 1045
General Chemistry Lab
1*
Pros: Can leave class when your done
Cons: Very strict on time policy

Easily lost on what to do
Late for lab because TA and teacher didn't see me standing behind the people they were talking to. Same day a guy was a few seconds late and was not allowed in either. Most of what is done is through the Chem Lab Manual and it's easy to get lost on what needs to be done and how it should be done. Class isn't that hard, but the work can be confusing and sometimes teacher/TA are hard to handle (ie. story above). It's probably an equivalent to a virtual class.

Pros: none
Cons: Victoria Long (aka Satan) and Dalton (the spawn of Satan) made this course a nightmare.
This course is complete BS. The amount of work is ridiculous for an introductory lab class. I found these labs to be even more pointless than the first semester's labs. The workload is enormous; it's not necessarily difficult, but time-consuming beyond belief.

The final exam is hell, a grade-dropping, completely unfair test. A lot of calculation questions that would be simple with a calculator, yet become extremely annoying because a calculator isn't allowed. You must know the most minuscule details from the manual. All I can say is good luck.

Just buckle through this course and get through it. It won't be fun; just accept it and keep on keeping on.

CHEM 1045
General Chemistry Lab
1*
The class is a painful rite of passage with an absolutely ridiculous amount of work for a single credit. It is time-consuming and irritating, but it is possible to get an A.

Pros: TAs grade 80% of the class, most grade primarily for completion.

Cons: Dropping 6 hours a week on the reports isn't uncommon, and a lot of the instructions for the post-labs are vague or unclear. The grades depend on your TA. Most of the TAs act like entitled pricks, some of them don't speak English.

Advice: If you haven't gotten a computer yet, this class would have swayed me against getting a Mac. While the class states that you can use a Mac, the instructions are designed with Microsoft Office and Google Chrome in mind. Formatting is a bitch. Also - print everything out, put the pre-lab and the post-lab inside your notebook, and put the lab notebook in your backpack the night before. I never took my goggles out of the backpack. If you have any choice in which lab to take, I would avoid 8 AMs (obviously) or Mondays. I had a Monday lab and there were people in my lab that were invariably up until 2, 3, 4 AM finishing the report the night before.

Labs are 70% of the grade, but one is dropped. For lab, you must have your lab notebook, the pre-lab, closed-toed shoes, and lab goggles. For some labs you need your laptop. If you're missing any of it, you will not be allowed to enter and your grade for the week will be a 50%. There are twelve labs, and you typically have a pre-lab and a post-lab that are graded and combined for the grade that week. One lab is online, so you don't have to come in or do a pre-lab. For the last several (6?) labs, you compile a lab report for each lab that contains information from the pre-lab and the post-lab. The lab is not taught by a professor but by a graduate TA, so grading depends on the TA, but my lowest lab grade was a 91.

The lab notebook is 10% of the grade. I got a 100 and don't know anyone who didn't, but again it's graded by the TAs so maybe some grade harder than others. You complete all of the pre-lab and some of the lab in the notebook, and tear off a carbon-copy of the sheet to turn in at the end of lab. It's fairly easy, though I know that I missed a few headings and whatnot.

The final is 20% of the grade. I actually missed the final for medical reasons and just took it later that week with another lab. Each lab has a slightly different final; I got a 74. It was not curved. There were a few problems that were impossible without a calculator, and a calculator wasn't allowed on the test.

Personally - I missed one of the labs because I forgot my pre-lab. Best thing to do (because it probably will happen to you) is not to freak out, because your lowest grade is dropped anyways. The good news is that you don't have to do the post-lab that week. Make sure you remember to e-mail your TA and turn in the post-lab that you would have turned in the day that you missed. I scraped an A in the class with a 93.15%.

Pros: lol wtf is pros
Cons: Where should I start....? Victoria Long is literally a satan bitch. These pre-lab and post-lab reports take FOREVER. Literally forever. And it doesn't matter how much time you spend on them, you will never get above 85-90. It took the life out of me to complete this course. Throughout, I have a pretty lenient TA so I did really well on lab reports and stuff. BUT your grade really doesn't matter until the finally exam, which is 50 questions in 50 minutes based all on 12 experiments we did in the semester. Let me repeat again, VICTORIA LONG IS A SATAN BITCH. Uhm the review sessions didn't even help with the final exam. It was terrible. So terrible that there were so many people walking out crying. I got a C because of the stupid finals. I had a solid B until the exams and yeah. She's a bitch but you don't got no other choice.

Pros: If you take the labs and lab reports seriously, you should be fine! Also, it depends on your TA; mine was pretty laid back and helped us a lot so it just depends.
Cons: Pre-labs and lab reports take up a lot of time... And there will be general assistants who will walk around sometimes, so just make sure you're following code because they will kick you out if they notice something.
Overall, it's an easy class if you put the effort into it. I would highly recommend going to at least a couple of the final exam review sessions, if you can. The final exam was pretty easy by just glancing over the lab notebook, but it would've definitely helped to get some extra feedback.

Pros: Fun when you have good lab partner.

Fun if you like hands on activities.
Cons: Very long labs.

Lab Reports take up soo much time.

Labs don't relate to class at all.

Very strict.

TA hard to understand.
The labs aren't that bad and some can be done very quickly. There is a lot of things you can get in trouble for... whether it's not wearing goggles or missing goggles. The TA is a really lenient grader, but Victoria Long is very strict. It's an okay class, but the lab reports take forever to write and they're such a pain to write. Other than that, it's an okay class.

Pros: -Knowledgeable teacher

- Fair grader

-Work is spread out over the semester so you're not writing a 20 page paper the night before it's due
Cons: -In class assignments can occasionally go over the allotted class time
Overall, she was a good teacher. I became a better writer and learned a lot about the different type of search engines. Just show up to class, do the homework, and you should get at least a B pretty easily

CHEM 1046
General Chemistry Lab

Pros: You can say you survived the Gen Chem labs and lived to tell the tale.
Cons: It will suck all of the joy out of your life and make you question your existence.
I just walked out of the final for this class, and I cannot be happier to be done with it.

This is the most painful class I have ever had the misfortune of taking. The lab reports will take you hours to do if you do them correctly. You won't understand what is going on half the time (especially because it does not correlate with lecture), but it's not too hard to bullshit. If you work hard, you will generally be okay.

There is no leniency in this class. If you are even a second late, you will not be allowed in, no matter what the circumstances. Have a question? Good luck finding a clear answer from anyone in that department.

A lot of your experience will depend on your TA. I was lucky to have a good one this semester, though he did not really understand what we were learning either.

As for Long herself? She is not a pleasant person, but she's not that bad. However, Dalton is a nightmare. Avoid her at all costs, because odds are she will yell at you for breathing. I do not know what grudge the chemistry staff holds against college students, but just stay out of their way and your life will be easier.

There is nothing that will prepare you for the final. Hours of studying, attending review sessions, sacrificing lambs to the Dark Lord Dalton....all useless. There are calculations on that exam that simply cannot be done without a calculator in the time limit you are given. You will be forced to recall the most mundane irrelevant facts. Just study smart and do the best you can, that's all I can recommend.

This class sucks but it is necessary for a lot of majors. It's almost a rite of passage to get through the notorious Gen Chem labs. Tackle it head on, work hard, and you will be fine.

CHEM 1045
General Chemistry Lab

Pros: If you have a TA, you'll be fine.
Cons: She's definitely a female dog.
I wasn't even in General Chemistry Lab (I took this horrid nightmarish of a single credit course my freshman year), and she wouldn't let me into my General Microbiology Lab because I didn't have a pre-lab, which still doesn't make sense to me.

Was already stressed out and received a zero for the day, because I physically could not get to the class. I dropped the easy lab, because of this barking dog-woman. As I was asking her about the syllabus, the doors closed, and apparently the chemistry lab rule is that you cannot enter once the door closes, because you're going in there with an AK47 to kill her in execution style or something.

Oh, this one credit course will be an equivalent to three, if not 19 credits. I'm a graduating senior taking 19 credits, and the workload is way less stressful and I actually enjoy going to class.

Foreign TA's accents goes like this: "GHKjhwefijsdjfhkjhseiuwepoiq zaekwjfh aoeihfawjhef."

Oh, and this lab makes you hate everybody, because only two kids out of the lab can get an A, regardless of what you have in class. Because her philosophy is that "not everyone deserves an A."

I honestly don't know why she's teaching. It's rather dangerous. If there's another school shootout because of her and this horribly organized, MANDATORY, one-credit course, I would not be surprised. She clearly does not give a f--- about her students. You're just another thing here for a numerical grade.

Seriously though, she was my professor (General Chemistry Director) and I never saw her face. I only know her by name and what people say about her. Which are not very good representations of a person. I did not really enjoy the Chem Lab Curriculum. I felt like I was thrown to the wolves and was kind of at loss as to how to complete the labs most of the time. I did not really learn much chemistry but I did learn how to properly site sources, write lab reports, and use electronic tools such as Endnote and Microsoft Excel. The course did give me the realization that college classes are serious business and they should not be meddled with. The lab policies are strictly enforced. That is what I learned.

Pros: If you do the work right, it's not hard to get A's on your lab reports.
Cons: IT'S SO MUCH WORK.
This class is way too much work for just one credit. It is not too hard to get an A, as long as you show up to every single class and do all that is required. It is a lot of work to do pre-lab, citations, post-lab, lab reports, and lab notebook write-ups. My lab reports were consistently 8+ pages, single spaced.

-lab reports take 3-5 hours
Your grade really depends on the leniency of your TA. Oh and how bad you do on the final (that's the main deciding factor)
