Oler is a very hard teacher. He grades based on the average of the class which is lower than most classes. He will help you understand the topics being taught, but will try and trip you up on the tests, and whoever is most prepared will get the best grades in his class. Its a lot of work, but this is upper level accounting, and its not supposed to be easy.

Pros: Very nice guy, exceptionally smart, good at explaining all the material even though it's all difficult
Cons: The class in one word is just hard. Be prepared to work your butt off
Alright, so probably everyone is thinking that I'm the kid who got an A in this class because I am giving him 5 stars. Wrong. I got a B in the class and I'm proud of it. The reason for the 5 stars is because of what you get out of this class. This class pushes you to your academic limits and you really see just how much you really want to be an accountant.

Oler starts off showing a little bit of tough love for the first half of the semester and then he completely lightens up, starts making jokes and telling stories in class, and then he will talk about how happy and proud he is of you for surviving his class.

My suggestion to anyone about to take the course to DO WELL ON THE FIRST QUIZ. The first quiz was what put you in really in what letter grade you were going to get. My other suggestion would be to do the problems that he assigns in the back of the book. They're extremely helpful and they show what portions of the chapters that he will most likely be testing you on.

Pros: Great professor, always willing to listen and help after class or office-hours

graded on rank (good?), most end class with minimum C-
Cons: Class itself is insanely hard

only 2 exams, must perform well. 2 quizzes are like mini-exams, Cases require a good bit of time
Oler is probably the best professor you could take at tech for 3116; he is incredibly knowledgeable, kind, respectful, and will do everything in his range of power to encourage you to really learn the material and grasp the essence of your major. Unfortunately the class itself is insanely hard (be glad you don't have to take it with Brozovsky), only 2 exams offered that you must prepare for. This will probably be one of your hardest classes you'll ever take at tech and, assuming you did decently well at 3115 (at least a C) you should be ok if you work your ass off. Make sure to do all the Connect HW to get as many points as you can, and do every one of the practice problems before you submit your connect hw. If your work hard, the curve will be in your favor and you could walk out with a very good grade; if you slack off you're in for a wild ride.

Pros: Very nice professor who has a great personality and is always willing to help students if necessary.
Cons: The only bad thing is that this class is very difficult, but if you work hard, then you will pass.
Dr. Oler is a great person who wants his students to succeed and excel in the class. He will ask you tough questions during his lectures to challenge you, but don't feel intimidated if you either don't know the answer or get it wrong. I worked extremely hard in this class and ended up with a grade a bit above the average, but I enjoyed how this class really taught me the core fundamental concepts of accounting. My advice to all accounting students who will have to take this class is that you should not give up and don't let the course discourage you. Almost every single person who struggled through this class will tell you that all the hard work you put into this class pays off in the end.

If you want an honest idea of what the class will be like read this:

-You will do terrible on tests/quizzes but it is how well you do compared to the other classmates

-Be prepared to study a lot if you want to do well

-You can do all the practice problems and homework and you will still see something on the test/quizzes that you haven't seen or don't understand.

-If you are one of those people that studies 24/7 getting all A's then you will probably do well, if you are one of those people that study just before a test and still get A's and B's this class is gonna suck for you.

Pros: Easy IFRS project

Very interesting to listen to
Cons: May not be super patient in office hours if you are not one of his students with As or A-

Difficult material

Dr. Oler's Intermediate class is pretty hard. I ended up with a B in his class, but I think I learned a lot from the class. He makes Intermediate harder than it should, but this challenging class will benefit you in the future once you work. It is a shame that Pamplin is letting Dr. Oler go.

Pros: You will learn so much from Oler. He is really excellent teacher who is extremely knowledgeable on the subject matter. His lectures are easy to listen to and he gives really good slides to follow along with.
Cons: Tests are really really hard. This class is graded solely based on your class rank at the end. I was able to do well, but it required a lot more effort than a typical class.

His exams are very discouragingly hard. He even said that he was expecting the class average to be around 50 or 60 and I think it came out to be around 40. We all had a huge curve but sitting through one of those exams is going to be one of the worst experiences in your life. His group projects are impossible too.

Cons: His class is really hard. He passes most of the class.

Cons: It's just a really hard class
Oler was by far my favorite Accounting professor. The class is extremely hard on its own, but Oler makes you understand his expectations. I ended the class with a B+, but that's only because I studied my ass off to understand the material. You should have a decent understanding of every part of the chapters going into the exams and quizzes.

The quizzes are just as hard as the exams, so don't try and BS through them.

I would also suggest taking the Concepts and Skills class the semester after taking Intermediate 2 - time value of money is a lot easier in Concepts after taking this class, especially with Oler.

Great teacher. Does a great job lecturing. Tries to remember everyone's name, which is hard with 170 students over 4 classes. Tells stories when the class may be getting boring. His tests are very hard, but he grades the class on a scale, so you just have to do better than everybody else. As long as you reach a certain amount of points he will give you a passing grade. This class is the class you should put most of your focus into. Do not skip class or you will fall behind. If you do the homework and all the practice problems given before the tests you should be in good shape. He is very willing to help if you are stuck on something.

Really nice guy, keeps your attention and gets to know the class. Class is really difficult. If you got through intermediate I kick it up probably 30% and you're at Intermediate II. This is even more a weed out class because there are no finance students in there so they don't have to dumb it down at all. Advice would be that you stick with it. It requires a ton of effort and believe me you can't just get along just hoping the curve will pass you, but if you put in a lot of effort you will pass. A lot of people dropped after both of the exams but in the end I think some of them probably could have stayed and passed.

Pros: Very intelligent professor and also has a good sense of humor. Willing to help outside of class.
Cons: He moves through the material very quickly and the exams are flat-out brutal.
Extremely difficult course that will require a lot of effort. Class is graded on a curve so as long as you're pulling the average you'll get a B. His exams are very discouraging and you'll probably walk out feeling like you bombed it (and you probably did). Good thing is that most of the class will bomb it with you however. Study and prepare adequately for the exams and quizzes and you'll walk out with a B or better.

Pros: You have to study a lot to get a good grade, but the tests are pretty predictable. He's a nice guy and will help you if you go to office hours if you have a specific question.
Cons: He read from the powerpoints and went so fast through them that I had to go back through the book and learn the material. Also, it's annoying that you never know your exact grade because he uses a ranking system.
If you're an accounting major and have to take this class just make sure you can have enough time to put the work in.

Pros: Great attitude! I really felt I learned the material, even though the tests were SO hard. The grading scale seems unfair at first, but it works out for the benefit of many in the end.
Cons: Wiley Plus Homework assignments, Evening Tests
Be prepared to work. As is expected with this course, the subject matter is mostly not cut and dry, and is difficult to grasp at first. Stay with it and really try to learn the material, not just memorize it.

Hands down the best teacher and class i have taken at VT. Taking his class and being successful requires you to take your work ethic to another level. exams and quizzes are very difficult, averages are usually around 50%, but he scales the grades so that the class average is a b/b-. so beat the average and your looking at a b+ in the course. if you put the work in, that shouldnt be hard to do

Pros: You learn to do your own work and work extremely hard at it
Cons: You're graded on a rank and it can be intimidating. He's also not the friendliest guy to his TA
Dr. Oler is a nice guy and pretty funny. He's a good teacher and makes it obvious on what is going to be the short answer problems on the exams and quizzes. It's just a hard class and requires a lot of hard work.

dont have a choice on the teacher but Oler is very smart. class is based on rank and your rank determines your grade. hw is not that difficult but can be time consuming

Difficult material but Oler is an incredible professor. I learned more in this accounting course than I did in all of my other accounting courses combined. If you go to office hours he will take his time explaining things to you in detail. It was one of most challenging courses but I was able to earn a B+.
