PHIL 3505 - Modern Logic & Dev
I took this class as a second semester freshman and it was quite difficult for me. I didn't attend any office hours, however, so maybe my grade could have improved through that. I will most likely be completing the semester with a B.
Pros: Explains material thoroughly and attempts to get class to understand.
Cons: The material is very difficult.

Dr. Parent is a good teacher. Made seemingly difficult material understandable. His tests are somewhat erratic; one test will be really tough, the next easy. Very lecture driven class; you really can't afford to skip. No textbooks so notes come lecture. Is willing to slow down his lecture in order to make sure all students get the material. Overall nice guy and good teacher. Would recommend this class.

5*****
Pros: Professor Parent is a lot of fun. He doesn't mind making examples in the class silly if it gets his point across, and he encourages discussion in class. These discussions, by the way, were fantastic. One of my favorite classes I've taken here.
Cons: He does stop a lot to collect his thoughts, and doesn't always get to everything he has planned (such as weekly in class writing. I didn't mind too much, but some people might need the grade boost)

Pros: This concepts discussed blew my mind several times. One of my favorite professors while being at Tech

This class made me want to take more philosophy classes.
Cons: His examples are often quirky and entertaining, but can make the concept difficult to grasp sometimes.

The books are difficult to read initially but they will grow on you.
You should definitely stop by office hours to get a better feel of the material -he's a cool guy to talk to about pretty much anything. If you like to think about big picture I would recommend this class. If you think you'll like it, you will.

5*****
Pros: Explicates difficult issues and provides many objections, replies, and examples.

Note presentation is perfect.

Sometimes takes brief pauses to collect his thoughts in order to give you the most accurate account of the information
Cons: Notes were not posted on scholar (though I only list this here because I know many people do not take notes but if you do take good notes it is not hard to get good paper grades)

There are not very many grades in this class, which makes it better in my opinion. However, if you can't just BS a paper in this case because it will really affect your grade if you do poorly. He is a really funny guy who engages the class with good discussions and enjoys what he is doing. Definitely one of the best philosophy classes I have taken overall at VT- also, best discussion class discussions because I did not feel rushed and was able to really think about the issues.

Pros: He goes into deep detail about the readings, making sometimes dense readings easier to understand.

He is nice and charismatic. I like him as a person.

He makes sure the material is as clear as possible by explaining multiple times and creating examples.
Cons: Sometimes the explanations of the reading material can be dry and slow and repetitive. This is kind of necessary as it is dense and hard to explain, so it's not necessarily a fault of Ted.
The class can be a little boring, but I like how personable he is and how he seems to have a firm grasp on the material.

Pros: Lenient grading.
Cons: Parent can make things more difficult than they need to be. You may have better luck by reading the book. Sometimes in class he appears not to know what he's doing.
I found this class easy, but I have a background in computer programming that prepared me for the basic ideas. Most other people in the class seemed to have difficulties with the material. If it's easy for you, I would suggest skipping class and reading the book except on days when homework is due.

Pros: He's very nice and fun to talk to and provides his own insight on different philosophers theories.
Cons: He grades hard as hell and is very monotone.
His grading is very rigorous as I had only two comments made on my entire paper that weren't big comments and I received a B even though I poured hours of work into the paper. He is a great guy and very intelligent but he may not be worth it if you're looking for anywhere from a B+ to above

Cons: Worst professor I've ever had. Never prepared for class, lectures were useless, syllabus was non existent. He has no idea what he's doing. Seriously, he comes to class as though it's a chore, and who wants that? His 'tests' were extremely hard often covering material that we did not go over. Ironically, His grading system is also illogical.

Pros: Great funny guy with very interesting views. Loves discussing tangents and any manner of random conversation points. Classes were fun.
Cons: Your whole grade is 3 papers, and if you're not a philosophy student and don't know how to write a philosophy paper, it could hurt you. Visit him during office hours to discuss your papers.

Pros: knowledgeable

passionate
Cons: can be dry
So this is logic, and while there are those who love logic, most of us just have to slug through it. If you actually do the homework and pay attention in class, I don't see how anyone can get below a B+. Easy class with an easy to approach professor.

Pros: Very little work to do, examples can be entertaining, is a cool guy overall.
Cons: Only 3 assignments the whole semester, one test and two papers. Participation is very crucial and if your class is like mine it can be difficult to participate with some kids who take it way too seriously.

Pros: Ted tells you exactly what he expects from you on the tests.
Cons: Dry material, not much participation or interaction
Ted is very straightforward is what he expects from you. Lectures can be dry, and if you have a good basis of logic, there is no need to attend each and every class.

Pros: Interesting class discussions/lectures

Cons: Not always super exciting in class
One test, two written papers. The test was just two essay questions. You definitely need quality work for an A in this class, but getting near an A is not difficult.
