ACIS 4194 - Analysis of Fin Statements

Pros: - Tests are not too difficult
- A lot of "buffer grades"
- No final exam
Cons: - Tons and tons of unnecessary busy work, inside and outside of class
- Ross thinks Finance majors are stupid because they are not Accounting majors
- Quizzes every week
- Homework is due by 10pm the night before every class
- Foundation simulation is a pointless, irrelevant assignment that nobody has any idea how to do successfully
- Will have about 3 homework assignments per week, all of which are graded very strictly
- Is not approachable, very unwilling to answer questions during class and will send a ton of emails instead
- Attendance is mandatory and 10% of your grade

As a finance major, we are pretty much screwed either way either having to take either Intermediate Accounting or Financial Statement Analysis (with Ross). This class really wouldn't be that bad, but Dr. Ross is not a good teacher at all. It doesn't seem like she likes kids. She is very arrogant, being a hotshot CPA, and talks down to her students as if they are just "stupid finance majors". She gives an absolutely ridiculous amount of work and makes it due early the night before every class. You will have a quiz every week, many of which are on Friday. Her office hours are pointless, as asking her questions is like pulling teeth.

Overall, this class is a good alternative to ACIS 3115 in terms of difficulty, but Dr. Ross makes it dreadful. Her exams really aren't that bad, but this class comes with a ton of annoyance and aggravation. She is the only ACIS 4194 teacher to my understanding so you may be stuck taking it with her, but if there is another teacher I would strongly encourage you to take them instead.

Cost Planning and Control
2**
Pros: -Drops quizzes at end of year if exam grades are better

-Weekly MyAccountingLab (MAL) hw is grade booster
Cons: -Mandatory attendance

-Weekly quizzes, not always easy

-Bitter, caustic personality..speaks down on some students
Dr. Ross is a good scholar, but doesn't mean she's a good person. The class layout was very confusing; she'd quiz us weekly on stuff we would spend maybe 20 minutes on in class but not the MAL hw we would spend hours on. Quizzes were every week and she graded harder as the class proceeded (no partial credit for most quizzes, mess up one part and youre done for.) She isn't the nicest lady; she has a very sarcastic and caustic tone and some days it'll feel like she's actually enjoying talking down to students. I ended up with a C but many students did a lot better, and many a lot worse. The class is 2116 on steriods; if you have a very good grasp of accounting then it'll be fine, if you struggle a bit then it will be very challenging. I would recommend another professor...going to class was terrible

Pros: She makes her exams very easy to compensate for the fact that she does not teach well so students do not really learn anything in that class.
Cons: She is a very rude condescending professor with lack of patience for teaching. Constantly mocks students and brings them down. She does not teach well, not ready for the class and hates when students ask questions (she pretends that she does not hear them and makes fun of that person by asking him to repeat the question again every single time). She was making fun of the student for the entire semester doing just that. She is ignorant and does not know what she is doing in class. I could have taken another professor if I had a choice or even take this class online. The class is all over the place. You have homework online, you do classwork in class, exams material is never on what you have covered in class or online doing homework.

Pros: Scratch off tests
Cons: Constantly changes structure of the class

Textbook is a horrible read

Constant group work

Never posts solutions
I couldn't list it, but I had Dr. Ross of ACIS 4194, Analysis of Financial Statements, and it was one of the most frustrating classes I have ever taken at VT. She constantly changes the structure of the class (at one point we had two tests within 7 days), she rarely actually teaches anything in class, and you have quizzes on Fridays that aren't even graded.

She refuses to post solutions to any of the homework, so it's honestly impossible to get anywhere with that. If you want an answer, she says to email her your solution and she will check it. That had to be one of the most frustrating things for me.

The only good thing about the class are the scratch-off tests which allow you multiple chances on the multiple choice questions.

Overall the class is horrible, she doesn't teach and nobody has a clue what is going on.

Di is a very good teacher who tries to make herself available whenever you need her. She can be a bit intimidating, but once you get past that, she is a fantastic teacher. During class, she rarely just lectures, but you spend most of the time working out practice problems which can prove very helpful when the test comes around. This past semester, we had 6 tests which I didn't mind at all because each test only covered 2 chapters max making studying much less stressful. Also, if you get to know her, she's really nice and willing to help you out when you need it!

Analysis of Fin Statements
4****
Pros: Pros: I really liked Dr. Ross as a teacher because she was fair and did a great job teaching non-ACIS students about financial statement analysis. The CAPSIM business simulation was fun, interesting and reaffirmed our knowledge of the financial statements and how they reflect the performance of the business. This course is a great alternative to ACIS 3115.
Cons:

Cons: This class can give a great deal of anxiety, and it requires a ridiculous amount of work, more so than any other 4000 course I have ever taken. We had homework assignments that would take 3 hours to complete due every MW at 8 am, quizzes every TR and CAPSIM due every Tuesday and Sat. There is no possible way that a student can take a normal courseload with classes that all required the same amount of work. Lastly, the homework associated with CAPSIM was a complete waste of time. We had to do an Excel document that took multiple hours to complete; it was only repeating the statements that were easily found online.
Overall, this course requires a RIDICULOUS amount of work, but everyone ends up with a good grade.

Pros: Fairly easy course.

She warms up to the class.
Cons: Tons of tedious work.

Is pretty grouchy at first.
I really disliked her class for the first 6 weeks. Attendance is required every day, no matter what. She doesn't excuse your absence for interviews or any event. Also there is some kind of small assignment due every day until about the last 3 weeks of the course. That being said the material is pretty easy and after the drop date (it almost seems like she tried to scare people out of the class) she warms up in class. I expect to get an A- or A in the course.

Pros: The material for this class isn't very difficult.
Cons: Weekly homework assignments that are graded based on completion. They're tedious.
Her exams aren't that bad as long as you put some effort into studying for them. Relatively easy class.
