BIOL 2104 - Cell and Molecular Biology
This class is a lot more demanding than a traditional class and it way more challenging. Expect to put in at least 18 hours a week for this course, which includes carrying out the assignments and doing the required reading.
Cons: Very Challenging Weekly Assignments that often consume more than 8 hours of work. Dr. Sible will check the sources of your information so you can not cut and paste and think you can get away with it.

You are forced to read 50 to 100 pages of heavily material every week, and if you don't you will struggle in the class and she will call on people to answer questions from the reading.

Class participation is a must! If you get stuck in a group full of lazy people you might end up doing their work as well and it can be a huge burden...it will consume the entire weekend.

You have a final project that is very challenging and requires the understanding of scientific journals and papers. Lots of time spent researching and digging up research articles.

BIOL 2104 - Cell and Molecular Biology
Dr. Sible is an excellent professor, who is always willing to help. This class is very different from the traditional lecture. If you like taking tests then do not take this class. However, if you want to try out a new style of learning then take this class.
Pros: There were no tests! All work was done in a 3 or 4 person group. Excellent learning environment that simulated the working scientific world.
Cons: Grading was very subjective. Rubric was given but most work was just graded off how Dr. Sible liked it. Started grades off low and you had to work hard in order to raise them. There was some favoritism with students she already knew.

This is a very interesting class, and yes, I would recommend it. Everything you do is group work. There are group assignments and a major group project at the end of the semester. Choose your group wisely as they will influence your grade heavily and MAKE SURE that they like you. The only problem with this class, is that I feel you do not learn a lot. My group split up all the work evenly and as a result I only ever looked at my portion of the work. The assignments are very difficult and answers must be in-depth. She does, however, give a few weeks before the assignment is due. I recommend getting them done early and going to her office hours so she can check out your answers. She gives weekly reading quizzes but tells you the main pages to focus on, so you don't read the whole chapter. All in all, she is a good teacher. I would recommend this class if you are looking for an upper level biology elective.

Pros: this class is student centered, it is project based aka groups, lots of TA's to help
Cons: assignments every week, takes up alot of your time, hard to learn because you are practically teaching your self, you have to design a cell
i suggest if she teaches a normal class lecture, take her, if not than turn around and go the other direction. i thougt this class would be easy, but it is not. Its a 2000 level and seems almost like a 3000 level. The book that we had was also not built very well for what we were trying to do. Just way to much work especially if your not really interested in it. I love Dr. Sible she is a great lady and a wonderful teacher, i wish i could of had her for lecture class.

I took the S.C.A.L.E. Up class with Dr. Sible. It was an interesting experience centered on active learning. Which basically translates to the students doing most of the learning themselves. Everyone gets assigned into teams and the teams then have to work on assignments. Sometimes this means that the person who knows the weekly subject the best doing the lions share of the work for that week. If no one knows the material that well, then you teach each other. It really fun but can be time consuming.

I don't know if it was because this was like the 4th biology class I've been in, but this material just stuck during lecture. Take notes on what she says in class- will be on exam. Also make sure you know answers to homework questions because they will be on the exams too. Very generous w/ curving. Overall as enjoyable as bio can be

Professor Sible is a very sweet and understanding lady, she has that whole motherly I care about everyone vibe. She does have a tendency to throw out really ridiculous clicker questions, but she is ready and eager to answer any questions that you may have!

Pros: You can print out the power point slides to use as notes which makes everything easier. She has these learning goals that can be completed before exams. All questions are taken from the learning goals.
Cons: She is a pretty quite talker at times.
