ACIS 3504 - Acct Sys and Controls
You just need to make sure you do all of the quickbooks on time and read the textbook. Its all MC and conceptual problems
Pros: Easy class if you pay attention and use common sense.
Cons: Stuff is really easy and is hard to force yourself to read it

The course is miserable and unfortunately a requirement to take your next ACIS classes. There are three exams and eight Quickbooks assignments through the semester as well as a small participation grade.

The first and second exam are split between multiple choice and short answer problems while the final (which is non-cumulative) is 80% MC. The reason the exams are difficult is because they cover three to four chapters in material spanning 150-200 PowerPoint slides (all material on the slides is fair game). The material is all derived from her lectures and she does not take any questions from the book, so it is essential to go to class. The homework is based off the QuickBooks accounting software which in itself is not a difficult program. However, there are eight QuickBooks assignments through the semester and they average about an hour to hour and a half of your time (sometimes more). The homework is also not discussed in class nor does it relate to the material she teaches.

Wallace herself is an absolutely abysmal teacher. The lectures consist of her standing at a podium for about an hour droning on about some kind of senseless drivel. The material is not difficult, yet because she has no idea how to communicate it in an even slightly interesting way the class is unbearable.

Unfortunately, both the teachers for ACIS 3504 are awful so you'll have to pick your poison.

Pros: HAH.
Cons: -Wallace tests on extremely obscure things that were literally one sentence in the textbook.

-Takes random attendance/does random participation

-Worst class I've taken at Virginia Tech

-Wallace obviously doesn't care about her students or teaching at all

If you don't have to, do NOT take this class with Wallace. At the beginning of the semester she said don't show up to class if you're going to be late, yet somehow she's pretty much a minute or two late getting there every day and then takes another couple minutes to set up. The projector cuts off part of her powerpoints and she does nothing to try to fix it because she doesn't care. She's obviously only here for research and couldn't care less about her students. She's short with her answers when students ask questions and is pretty unhelpful when it comes to her office hours (if she hasn't cancelled them).

You have Quickbooks homework throughout the semester, which she doesn't teach in class at all. The instructions in the textbook (which costs $360, by the way) are awful and often have typos. She doesn't give you a grading rubric or anything before hand and there's no way of knowing if you're doing it correctly. Then when she hands your grades for it back she goes over the rubric and says "I don't know why a lot of you messed this up but you did" Maybe it's because we're not taught how to use Quickbooks.

Her tests are unnecessarily difficult. She'll ask questions on things that were mentioned in one sentence in the book- which teaches us absolutely nothing. Half the test is short answer so you have to really know the material, which is fair, but it's a lot of material on her tests to study for. This is the worst class I have taken at Virginia Tech and honestly I'm furious that Virginia Tech still lets her teach. She is an awful professor and I'm not paying thousands of dollars a year for that kind of education. I don't care if she's doing research for the school, she needs to stop teaching.

Pros: ......
Cons: -Limited office hours; sometimes none since she frequently cancels them.

-Does not care for her students.

-Homework/Projects unrelated to the actual class.
One of the worst classes and worst professors I've had at Virginia Tech. The material isn't difficult; but her exam questions are so specific (like others have said, one sentence from the textbook or PowerPoint slide) and since there's 250+ slides and 200+ pages of text to go through before an exam you are likely to miss the unnecessary details of the content. Her Quickbook Assignments are awful and unrelated to the class. In fact, the entire textbook and software costs $350ish and must be new because of the software registration. In addition, she does not tell you how she grades them nor does she help you if your confused so if you're stuck, you're screwed. Finally, if you are an awful test taker, one that might average D's on the exams but good at homework in order to raise your grade, you're out of luck. She has this system where you must get a C on one of the exams in order to get a C or better in the class. She does not let the Quickbook assignments raise your grade above your exam average. For instance, if you get three F's and a perfect score on homework/projects/participation, you are getting an F. Same thing goes if you get three D's, you will get a D. As you can see, I would avoid this lady at all costs and choose a TA or a different professor if one is available.

Cons: She was one of the worst teachers I ever had. The class material wasn't even that boring, but she made the class miserable. The quickbooks homework was hard and she would not help out with it at all. When I went to office hours it always seemed like she was pushing me out. The tests were impossible because she asked the most detailed questions about stuff she never taught. I heard the other teacher wasn't very good either, but his class was easier. If you can avoid her, do it.

Pros: Nothing.
Cons: Worst teacher
Avoid, avoid, avoid, avoid, avoid this teacher. Her tests are so hard but she will tell u "my tests are hard but I curve." If you go to her office hours she will most likely look at her computer rather than communicating with you. The concept of this course is not hard at all but she makes it difficult on purpose. Like everyone else told you, she is one of the worst accounting teachers in VT.

Pros: None
Cons: Incredibly tedious homework assignments that take hours to do and have nothing to do with the material you learn in class. She won't help you with them at all.
Worst teacher I have had at Tech so far. Incredibly boring lectures where she just reads off of slides with little explanation. Test averages were in the 60's because her test questions were on things we barely talked about and very specific. She barely curves the class at all, so everyone does poorly. The homework on quickbooks was the worst because she graded it very tediously, whereas, if you get the other systems and controls teacher (Hicks) you basically get a 100 on every homework assignment. Do yourself a favor and take another teacher.

She has no personality. You will be tempted not to go to class, but you really should. You have to do a bunch of Peachtree assignments. She never goes over any of that in class, so you have to go through the book as you are doing it. They aren't terribly hard, but they are time consuming so don't wait until the last minute. But these add up to as many points as an exam, so it can help your grade. The exams aren't too bad if you go to class and you study. If you don't do both of these, then you will be screwed. She is never in her office either. She was always canceling her office hours because she had an "appointment."

Pros: None.
Cons: Absolutely does not care about her students at all. Cancels office hours all the time because "something came up". Even if you end up going, she is no help. If you send her an email with a question, she is very rude and treats you like you're an idiot. The average on one of our tests was a 67 and she refused to curve the grade and blamed us for not trying hard enough.
As soon as I signed up for Wallace, I knew I had made a mistake. Everyone told me to switch professors and take this class with Fan instead. But his class already had 9 force adds and Wallace had a ton of open seats (another warning sign) so there was no way I could switch. I figured one might be slightly harder than the other, but not too big of a difference, right?

Fan gave 20/20s on Quickbooks assignments as long as you turned it in (he admitted to his class that he could care less about Quickbooks). He also let you work in groups and turn in just one assignment for the whole group. Wallace on the other hand grades her students' Quickbooks very harshly (our class averaged about 14/20 on all of them) and does not let you work in groups. Fan dropped the lowest of 3 tests, Wallace didn't. Fan's tests were all multiple choice, Wallace's were only half multiple choice and the other half consisted of really hard short answer questions). Fan had a huge curve the end of the semester for his students.

The differences between these two teachers and the effects on their students' grades is absolutely astounding. Wallace is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Her class consists of her reading powerpoint slides while the class stares blankly back at her. She is an embarrassment to Pamplin and I have no idea why she hasn't been replaced yet.

Pros: Good at being an awful teacher
Cons: -Boring, no personality

-Time consuming HWs

-Tough grader on HWs and Exams

-Little to no curve

-Unhelpful in office hour
The average of exam 1 for our class was 66 and she was unwilling give any curve.

I spent hours on the homework assignments only to get low grades, and when I went to her office hours to correct my errors she just told me to redo them all.

There are a lot materials covered in each exam, you basically need to read the book yourself since her lecture are just her going through the slides.

Definitely the worst professors I have had at VT....

Pros: It ends
Cons: - Absolutely useless

- Boring professor

- I’d rather rip my ears

Good lord, this class is absolutely horrendous. I thought 2504 was bad but gee wiz, this is a whole other kind of stupid. Not only is this class tremendously boring, nothing is intuitive and absolutely everything that is tested is about stupid business buzz words like "big data" or "blockchain". One of my favorite questions I encountered was "what's the difference between confidentiality and privacy?". If you are having a tough time figuring this question out, that's because the two words are GD synonyms. IT'S ALL JARGON. USELESS JARGON. This class had a part about Quickbooks, that I thought was actually interesting and worth a damn because it taught actual business processes and HOW TO ACTUALLY F**KING USE THEM. This class is about systems and controls, but I still have no idea how to implement them on a daily basis, nor do I understand the software and purpose behind them because all I am tested on is dumb, trivial vocab. I thought I finished stupid classes like these in middle school. I speak for all ACIS/BIT students here when I say that classes like these need to either be completely revised or entirely dropped. I could easily learn all this shit online in 2 weeks. This class added no value to my education and to me is a cash grab by Pamplin.

Pros: The material itself is very boring, but her tests are pretty much straight off of the slides. She is a fair and nice professor, the class material is just not very exciting.
Cons: You have to buy a >$300 Quickbooks package that doesn't really relate to the class. If you don't have to take this class don't because it's boring - but it's not the professor's fault it is just the nature of the class. It's not that hard to get a good grade in though, just study the slides
